General Rules
01) Read the Rules. You should read the entire front page, it's full of information you will want to know for this shop, but if you read nothing else- let it be the godrotting rules.
02) Behave Yourself. It goes without saying that flaming, harrassing, and/or making a nuisance of yourself is a huge no-no, but here we also frown upon the following emotes: crying sweatdrop emo
03) Don't Steal the Art. Our artist's work very hard to give each Tale unique art that is for them only. Anyone who breaks this rule will automatically be banned from the shop and reported to a mod.
04) Use Common Sense. We cannot stress this enough. Using common sense when you're in this thread, in an RP setting, or just on the internet in general will make life go so much more smoothly.
.........04-A) Don't ask us if you can have a Tale for free, don't ask if we will give your BFFE Rose a Tale. Tall Tales are available as they are available - if you want one, you can wait for your chance just like everyone else.
05) No Chat-Speak or Mega Quotes. Both are annoying, obnoxious and make Syrie want to kill things as well as making the person doing it look like an utter a**.
06) Real Life > Internet. We respect and understand that you aren't online 24/7 to answer questions or do journals etc and we expect the same courtesy from YOU. Delays due to real-life issues are wholly understandable - we do not penalize people here for this.
07) Please use brackets in thread when/if RP is going on. It's polite to show you are OOC (out of character) to use (( )) [ ] or something of the sort if you wish to stay out of the in-thread role-play.
08 ) One Tale Per Author. One is as much as anyone needs.


RP Rules
01) No God-Moding. While your Tale may have special abilities and powers if you so choose, please bear in mind that they have limits and imperfections.
02) Formal/narrative Roleplay Preferred. Either 1st or 3rd person perspective is acceptable.
03) The Study has a mind of its own. It will let only those it chooses enter, so no matter what you do - unless you are an author-to-be or were 'called' there - you can't get in.
04) You don't need a Tale to RP in the shop. As long as you RP formally and keep the shops rules and guidelines in mind, you are more than welcome here.


Custom Rules
01) Concepts must tie back to a Who, What, Where, Why or How question. However, questions such as "What is your Dream <insert already existing breedable pet here>?" will never be accepted.
02) If a staffer tells/asks you to change something in your concept - do not take it personally. We are not singling you out - there are simply some things that will not fly here.
03) Don't PM the mule/staffers asking when the next custom slot will be open. They open when they open.
04) Cosplays are a case-by-case basis. Cosplays are frowned upon as they will likely not have the same "powers" etc as the character they are based off of and most people have a hard time dealing with that.
05) All concepts require an approval. This is to keep from having a million star-princesses or five-thousand and two angels/demons/origami fish.


Sales Rules
01) Flatsales will cost 15k unless stated otherwise.
02) Once the question(s) and prompt(s) is/are posted, you have 24 hours to respond to it/one of them by posting your response in the thread.
03) You may not edit your submission. Doing so will disqualify you from that sale.
04) Do not discourage, threaten, or make others feel guilty for trying out. The same goes for being rude, mean or bitchy if you lose.
05) Send all trades to the mule. Any trades sent to a staffer will be considered a donation!
06) Include the phrase "Tell me a story" in your claiming post. This is just to see if you read the rules.

How the store was discovered...

Necessity is the mother of Invention, and Imagination is its consort. But sometimes, it takes a pinch of Fate to really make things happen.

It all began with a letter declaring Huni to be the new owner of an old stationery shop located somewhere in Barton. In spite of the suspicious circumstances surrounding this news, Huni had always been a trusting person. With little more than an overnight bag, Huni ventured off to Barton to see what sort of shop she now owned.

It could have been a quaint little store, if the display window wasn't covered in grime, and the doors weren't rotten from age and neglect. Still, there was something about the shop that Huni couldn't resist going inside to explore.

With the outside looking so run-down, it came as something of a surprise that the lights still worked. Although the bulbs did threaten to burn out any second. Hastily, Huni gave the shop's first floor a quick scan. The floor creaked whenever Huni walked on them, and the walls looked ready to fall apart. There were some writing tables and wooden chairs, and a couple of empty bookcases. And like the floor, they were all covered with a thick layer of dust.

A staircase that led to the second floor caught Huni's attention, but as she began to ascend, the lights started to flicker on and off. Aside from being trusting, Huni had always been something of a scaredy cat. And not wanting to get stuck upstairs in the dark, Huni decided to explore the second floor some other time. As she descended the stairs, something brushed against her foot. Whether it was a rat, a cockroach or some other vermin wasn't important. All that mattered was that it sent Huni into a blind panic. A shriek, followed by Huni's natural instinct to make a run for it, sent the red head careening for the door.

Unfortunately, it was also when Huni's clumsy nature chose to surface, and she tripped over one of the boxes. She ended up crashing against one of the rotting walls. After the world stopped spinning, and the lights stopped flickering, Huni groggily sat up. She gave a small yelp at the Huni-shaped hole that was gaping in the wall.

But as she peered inside, she gave a small gasp. Behind the wall appeared to be a study of sorts, and it seemed to have been sealed up for years, judging by the layer of dirt. Faded landscape paintings hung on the walls, and an old bear skin rug lay at the foot of a writing table. On the table were some sheets of yellowing paper, some fountain pens and inkwells, and beside the writing instruments was a thick, leather bound tome.

With the lights glowing steadily, and no sign of any movement coming from the study, Huni decided to go inside and give the tome a look. Written on the first page was a poem:

Tell me a story
Any story will do.
Long or short it matters not, or at the very
Least little, neither if it's real or untrue.

Tell me a tale
Anything out of the blue.
Let it be a question or an answer of
Exceptional significance or sheer nonsense
So long as it comes from you.

Huni wasn't sure what the poem meant, and decided to shrug it off as she scanned the rest of the pages. She found it odd that the owner of the book used just the top line, and wrote only one thing althroughout:

Why?

"Why, what?" Huni muttered. After staring at the pages for a few minutes, she found herself reaching for one of the fountain pens. After dipping the pen into an inkwell (and getting ink on her fingers), she added some words to the question and answered it.

As soon as she finished writing, the lights began to flicker again. This time, it burned out completely, and a cold wind blew into the shop. The wind seemed to swirl around Huni, knocking the tome out of her hands. Needless to say the red head screamed her head off at this odd occurance. The sheets of paper scattered into the shop's front and settled at the very center in a small mountain-shaped pile.

Visibly spooked, Huni exited the study back into the store. Once her heart stopped pounded, and the lights stabilized, she proceeded to pick up the papers.

"I didn't realize there were that many sheets." Huni sighed. Just then, a small hand emerged from the pile and grabbed the red head by the wrist. Once again, Huni released an ear-splitting shriek. Her own scream was echoed by the muffled wailing of what sounded like a baby. Huni stopped her screaming, and began parting the pile. Under all the papers was an infant, who was crying his eyes out in fear.

"Oh, oh, shhhhh, shhh." Huni cooed as she gently carried him into her arms. The moment the infant found himself in Huni's embrace, he ceased wailing and contented himself with soft whimpering. "Where did you come from?" she asked, the question directed more to herself than the infant. He gurgled a bit and reached out towards the direction of the study.


What's so special about the Study and the Tome...

With the baby in her arms, and the lights burning steadily, Huni re-entered the study. Her first thought was to bring the leather bound tome outside to read in a better lighting condition. But no matter what the red head did, the tome refused to be brought out. And by refused it would grow extremely heavy, or impossibly slippery, or appear to be glued to the writing table.

"What on Gaia?" Huni panted, feeling herself grow tired. In frustration she flipped open the tome and attempted to write a rather... nasty message. But even that proved impossible for as soon as she wrote anything onto the pages, the ink just drained away.

"Darn you!" she found herself yelling and angrily slamming the tome shut before pushing it off the table. There was a strange satisfaction in hearing the dull thud of a heavy book falling against the floor and seeing its pages splay apart. So you can imagine her surprise when she found another tome lying atop the table.

Huni stared at the second tome for a few seconds before her gaze reverted to the first tome on the floor. This went on for a good five minutes before she accepted that she wasn't hallucinating. Upon closer inspection, she saw the second tome was the same hue as the infant's hair. On the cover, embossed in gold leaves were the words

"Linneas?" she found herself uttering. And the baby in her arms seemed to answer back in gibberish. "Linneas?" Huni repeated, this time looking at the infant. He reached out to her and smiled as if in affirmation. "Oh so that's your name, Linneas is it? Well Linny, let's see what else this book knows about you." she suggested as she flipped the tome to the first page. She quirked a brow at the sight of her handwriting.

Why are things the way they are now?

And below the question was the answer.

Because it's all your fault.

"This was what I had written earlier... So what happens next?" she asked.

And as if in response, the pages turned into a blank sheet and the words "It's up to you" faded in. Instinctively, Huni stepped away from the writing table in case some evil spectre chose to appear at this point. But after several minutes of nothing, Huni decided to bring the book out of the study. While she had no difficulty in removing the second tome, it no longer replied whenever she asked it questions. Apparently, she had to figure this one out on her own.

Once she opened the shop, Huni realized just what was so special about the Study and the Tome. Whoever wrote a response to the Tome's question ended up with an infant and another tome. But what exactly do these new ones signify and what the original tome wants to accomplish is still a mystery.

Within the shop's Study lies a large book referred to by those that work in the shop (and the children that emerge from the enchanted pages) as The Tome. It is unimaginably old and has gems embedded into the strangely-tooled leather cover. A chosen few have been given the opportunity to write upon its pages, to answer the questions that form there. User ImageSimple Truth, or the "toddler" stage. All stories, no matter how weird or fantastic have some truth behind them. Or perhaps there is a certain truth as to why this particular story was created. As Simple Truths, the true nature of the Tale is not yet evident - in fact, your Tale won't even know he or she isn't an ordinary infant/animal/creature. In this stage, the Tale's age-apparent can range anywhere from 2-6 years old




User Image Embellished Tale, or the "adolescent" stage. As a Tale progresses, he or she grows more aware and begins to bridge some of the gaps between what once was and what now is. As Embellished Tales, they are given more details, more information. At this point the vagueness of the Tale's true nature begins to manifest more solidly to both Tale and Author, but it is still very much an unsure thing.
In this stage, the Tale's age-apparent can range anywhere from 7-14 years old.




User ImageLikely Story, or the "teenager" stage. Your Tale is quite possibly fully aware of who or what he or she is now; what once was fuzzy during the earlier stages will become clearer and more detailed to them. Who or what they once were may still be nothing more than a dream and depending on your Tale, they may be fine with it staying that way. Like in all teens, hormones have started to take effect also, making this a very delicate and touchy stage to be in.
In this stage, the Tale's age-apparent can range anywhere from 15-20 years old





User ImageTall Tale, or the "adult stage". No Tales have reached this point -- perhaps there are more sinister reasons or perhaps none have grown enough to make themselves "larger than life". The Study and Tome aren't talking, so any other information is unknown.

There are several ways of becoming a Tall Tale author. We try to keep a good variation on our in-house events so that there are chances for all walks of Gaian life. We hold flatsales, auctions, role-play/writing contests, and raffles as well as having auto-buy and pet-trade options available.

Flatsale Procedures: First and foremost, be sure to read the Rules post. Prompts will be posted and you will have at least 24 hours to PM your entry(ies) to the mule account OR respond in thread (the rules will say which is appropriate). Concept: This is the basis, mythos, daydream etc that your Tale is based off of; you will play your Tale to this -- it also gives the staff an idea of where you're going with your Tale. (eg: This Tale is about a hyperactive demon, one who is on a perpetual sugar rush. He loves anything sweet, whether it be food or a fellow Tale with a sweet personality. He has a soft spot for candy bars, particularly the milk chocolate kind and won't think twice about stealing yours if you aren't paying attention.)
3 physical qualities: These are (3) things that you feel are part of your core character-concept. Be it pink skintone, scales, feathers or the color of the Tale's eyes - it goes here and the artist will try to include these things in the art. (ed: Blue fur covers his skin, dark blue horns and a long blue tail)

Auction Procedures: The starting bid is 15k (flatsale price) with a minimum incriment of 1000g for any future bids; auto-buys will be determined on a case by case basis -- artists can set their own ABs. The auction will run for one to two weeks with a 2 hour anti-snipe going into effect 30 minutes from the end of the auction. This means that should anyone bid in the last 30 minutes of the auction, the auction will extend another 2 hours until a bid stands unchallenged OR someone Auto-Buys.

Auctions can be for either semi-custom or full-custom Tall Tales, so you will want to be sure the Tale offered is going to suit you before bidding. Retracted bids or inability to pay within 24hours of the auctions end will result in blacklisting unless a damned good reason is given to Syrie.

Raffle Procedures: Raffles happen as the staff has the time/inclination and may require a role-play sample to be eligible for ticket purchase. Tickets for raffles will cost 1,000g each with no limit on how many you may purchase for yourself or others, but you MAY NOT CHOSE YOUR NUMBERS.

Occasionally there will be a limit to the tickets one can purchase - so please make sure to read all the details for the raffle before posting. Raffles will last anywhere from one to three weeks.

AS A NOTE: Your Tale will not grow unless you PM the form below to the mule. The staff will then review your journal to assure that everything is in order. THEN the growth(s) will be worked on. Please note that the form is the same for custom/semi-custom/flat sale/event Tales -- Please also note that costuming etc is done at the ARTIST'S DISCRETION. They will do their best to assure your Tale looks the way they need to, but keep in mind that everything included in the form may not make it into the final art (it's a sanity issue guys).


Growth Requirements:
Requirements for Tale growths will now be based soley on the length of time that the Tale has been at it's current stage and activity. You cannot disappear for months and then come back expecting Cookie Monster to grow just because it's been 3 months!

Also, as many of the artists for the Tales have exceedingly pressing offline lives, there will be growth slots until such a time as they are not needed.
Please do not PM the mule with your form unless you have one of the slots.

The Auto-buy option comes in two flavors: Full Custom or Semi-Custom. Full Custom is precisely what it sounds like: you get control over all aspects of your Tale from Question, to Answer to clothes and hair-styles. Semi-Custom means you can chose your question, your answer and 5 traits for your Tale that the artists will work from.

If you are interested in purchasing an autobuy, please PM the mule account saying you want one and from which available artist would you prefer. Donation items are valued at Mid-TekTek prices but must be approved by the artist to be accepted.

Here are a few things that need to be considered before any Bindery ("breeding" wink can commence:

1.) There must be slots open - do not PM the mule/staff regarding when this might happen.
2.) The two Tales must both have reached at least the Likely Story stages.
3.) There must be a valid relationship established between the two Tales.
4.) Gender is irrelivant for the couplings as no physical "consummation" is required. (No sex, pervs XP)
5.) A "breeding" will result in 1-2 new tomes.

If all requirements are met and your Tales wish to Create, a ceremony will be held in which each of the involved Tales will remove a page from their Tome, bring said page to the Study and nest the two torn pages inside of the Tome.

The Tome will then kick the two out of the Study and lock itself until the following day, whereupon the couple will return to see what the Tome has granted them. Newly formed tomes will be waiting for answers from prospective authors; the "parents" must then find suitable authors and bring them to the new tome(s) to answer the question(s) and complete the process. Note that tomes can only be removed from the Study once their question has been answered and the second generation of Tales will have aspects from their "parents" -- Authors do not get to chose any "born-in" features.

Q: What exactly are Tall Tales?
A: Tall Tales are beings that come from a person's natural instinct to create a story from elements around them - consciously or not.

Q: So do the Tales know what they are?
A: It would depend on how you handle the roleplay. Some will know from the start just how special they are while others will only have vague and dream-like recollections.

Q: Do we get to create our own Tale?
A: Yes, you do. But realize that some events will limit your creativity by having presets. It is only by pursuing full-custom slots that you get to chose everything.

Q: Will my Tale have special powers or magical abilities?
A: Your Tale can, but know that staff approval is required before hand and that your Tale's abilities (should they have them) will grow as they do. Toddlers are not going to be be able to summon Bahamut, for instance!

Q: So how long can the answer/question be?
A: No longer than one sentence.

Q: Is there a limit to how many Tales we can own?
A: One Tale per Author.

Q: If I win can I give the Tale to someone else?
A: If it is permissible by the rules of the contest/sale/event, then yes. If role-play was required to win the Tale, no.

Q: How do I get a Tale?
A: Read the availability post - there are several options available to hopefuls.

Q: Are these Roleplay Required?
A: No, but you will be given a tome (Journal in the Guild) to fill as you see fit.

Q: Wait...I thought these WERE rp required! What gives?
A: Syrie felt that the last thing Gaia needed was yet another mediocre, RP-required BCP shop...so he killed that aspect. RP will STILL GIVE YOU PERKS. XP.

Q: Do you do Pet trades?
A: Yes, but we are picky monsters and reserve the right to say no without explanation.

Q: What sort of pets are you interested in?
A: Expensive ones.

Q: Will you ever take our Tale away?
A: Highly unlikely unless you are gone from Gaia/Give them up/Land on the Black List. Unfortunately, this revamp was done after a few Tales were removed/rehomed (or scheduled to be) for various reasons. This is part of the reason we're tossing the requirements.

Q: Why isn't this section called the FAQs? Everyone else calls them that.
A: It serves the same purpose and honestly, if you're a breedables regular, you don't really ask these questions frequently. XD
