A volcanoe called Tutauna holds a valuable gem within it's caverns. The gem appears once Tutauna's eruptions cool and harden. The gems are hidden by a thick, black pumas that must be broken away before the gem can be found. Kiylea, an elder of the island, is who hikes up to the first entrance in Tutauna and frees the gems from their hardened shell. After carefully chipping away at the pumas shells, Kiylea carries the gems back to a tiny village over 60 miles from the entrance to the valcanoe. She will hike for three days back with the heavy stones. As the journey takes place, the gems take on an inner glow. Each gem holds a spirit that Tutuana gives birth to.
Once back to the village, Tutauna hands the gems into Uguanda's possession. Uguanda, another elder, forges the gems into metal where they will be protected until they are developed enough to be released from the gems. The people of the village are given a gem in the metal bedding when they are around the age of 16. They carry the gem around their necks, keeping the precious stone close to them at all times. From the time the gem is given to the villager, they form a bond to eachother.
When the spirit is almost ready to depart the gem, the gem will crack and it will squeeze itself from it. When this begins to happen, the villager no longer carries the gem around his neck, but still keeps it close.
The Spirit will eventually completely be released from the small gem. As they grow, they will develope a power to help his villager as well as the entire village. While they expiriment with their new power, they must be careful. If anything happens to the spirit, the villager will feel it as well. This bond can be helpful as well as dangerous.
When the villager has reached his prime, around 20-25 years of age, the spirit will have reached his final state as a full Tutauna spirit. They will return to the volcanoe for a period of a month and return with stronger powers.
There is one last elder who helps protect the spirits from danger. Yugando, a former warrior, protects the entrance to the volcanoe. A near-by village hunts for the gems and harnesses their energy to expand their village. Yugando makes suer the gems are not hunted; he will do whatever neccessary to protect them.
