Welcome to the thread that centers around the more frowned upon line of writing. Before we rush ahead and jump the gun, let's settle a few minor details before we go. Let's discuss briefly the purpose of this thread:

The Ten Questions:

What is a Mary-Sue?
Is my character a Mary-Sue?
How can I fix my character if he/she is?
How can I tell a friend that his/her character is a Mary-Sue?
Is a Mary-Sue always bad?

What is considered cliche?
Is my story cliche?
How can I change my story so it is not cliche?
How can I tell a friend that his/her story is cliche?
Is cliche always bad?

These ten little questions often cause the biggest pains and problems in writing for most people. This thread will serve as the housing complex for questions and answers relating to the 10 questions and will also serve as a thread for people to share their opinions, insights, and own personal experiences with the above stated. They can give examples, share pieces from their own work, and debate in a friendly manner with one another. Flaming another person for their views, however, is unacceptable behavior and is severely frowned upon. If a flame war is started in this thread you will be asked to end it immediatley or leave. We like to keep an open mind.

On to the end! Help Me questions are more than welcomed here for any problem or querry a person may have on their personal peice. This thread is not simply limited to Mary-Sue and cliche questions, comments, and discussion only. However, do not mistake this thread for a random chat thread. There are already two well founded chat threads located in the WF, so if you wish to ramble on, take it to one of these: A&A - the crazy & lazy or 111 - the fast & furious

The end! Help can be given to anyone by anyone and therefore comments and opinions will be varied and helpful from many view points. Constructive criticism is the best criticism, but sometimes some of the more experienced WFers can be a little sharp with their reviews. If you cannot take a harsh review, please state so before hand.

Now with all that settled, let's wake up and see about solving some problems and sharing some thoughts.

MAGNUM'S ADOPT AN AUTHOR

As of this moment, Magnum is willing to adopt 2 aspiring authors in order to help and tutor them through whatever it is they are struggling with. Only thing, he is not good with fanfictions or poetry, so don't ask for help with that. He is not going to work on a "collaborative" story, he's not interested in writing a book, but he is interested in helping someone with their work. He will critique, he will analyze, and he will answer any and all questions to the absolute best of his knowledge. and yes . . . he is speaking in the third person. why? i do not know.

Here is what you must fill out for the Magnum in order to be elligable for adoption. PM it to him. Thank you.

Magnum retains the right to refuse any adoptee.

Bwa ha ha. I love that graphic you have there. This is a good idea to help/warn all those idiot wannabe-writers out there. Unfortunately, I don't think those who it's geared to will actually read it, because they never read the stickies. stare
Should we have links to popular definitions of Mary Sues, and tests thereof? It would save having to direct people to the Fanfiction subforum's sticky and whatnot.

Actually, that test isn't THAT bad if you realize that getting a score of 20-30 is actually GOOD. Because there's a difference between having an interesting character with a complicated backstory and an annoying overly-perfect cliche.

Would providing what not to do examples be too mean-spirited, or allowed at all? We could even write them ourselves (oh, that would be fun).

Of course, we could just link to the Godawful Fan Fiction forums. Here you go.

It sucks, though.

I always felt that test was good for pointing out cliches your characters should avoid, like colour changing eyes. Although I do agree it's not perfect. It really only covers the superficial aspects of a Sue.

Anydangway, there are fandom-specific limtus tests available. You can find them and other Mary Sue resources at the The Mary Sue Society.

If you have an OC and would like to hear others opinions on whether or not it is a Sue/Stu, try the OC Analysis community on LJ. The community's a little dead, though.
XD I love your siggy, Hemp Flamingo. Harry Potter OC's seem to be divided into two groups: Those perfect Gryffindors that do everything right, and the nasty Slytherin girls who end up getting Draco. It's like the other houses don't exist ... (I'm a Ravenclaw, wa ha ha.)
I guess I'll ask for some help domokun

I've been writting a fantasy story on and off for a while now, mostly off because I realized I haven't actually fleshed events out enough to start writting.

Anyways, the world where it takes place has a small pathenon of gods, with quirks and personalities and stuff, kind of the same way the Greek gods did. So far, the way I have it, the villian became the servant of a goddess willingly after she saved him from dying from a plague. She uses him to wage a war on a country, which is generally the sole area where the gods choose to hold any influence, because she's rather imbittered against the other gods for casting her out after she created two of her own races (The villian is from a neigbouring country, whose also rather bitter against them because they refused aid when his people were dying of a plague)

So anyways, thats a quick sum of the events that spark the conflict of my story. Does it sound clichè or overdone? Any tips, advice, ect? All help appretiated domokun
