The Serendipity Orphanage is a large, 3-story house about a mile away from a small town. The house sits on spacious grounds surrounded by greenery. Behind the house is a large pond and a small cottage in the middle of a colorful garden.

The house is a shelter for mixed-breed demon children.

Demons generally do not mingle with demons of other clans. Water demons with water demons, fire demons with fire demons, and so on. Every now and then you will have some who fall for one of another clan. Offspring from such relationships are shunned because they don't fit in either clan.

Usually such children would be left to fend for themselves. Most die. Every now and then one will get lucky and survive. Three of the founders of Serendipity Orphanage are survivors.

Ceophan is half fox animus, half fire demon. He helps with the more day-to-day tasks of running the orphanage. He takes care of the kids and helps out with things like bookkeeping and keeping the house in good condition.

Amrem is half bird animus, half wind demon. She runs a jewelry shop in town where she makes the products herself. She likes to make each child that comes to the orphanage a unique piece of jewelry.

Parlam is half electricity demon, half earth demon. He owns a small tailoring business in town. He makes simple, durable clothing for the children with the orphanage logo on it so the townspeople will know where they belong if they ever wander off.

The three of them and I, as well as my adopted fire/water demon daughter, Lyra, all live on the top floor of the house. Any children who haven't been adopted yet live on the second floor. On the first floor is a sunroom, playroom, kitchen, dining room, library, and offices for Ceophan and myself.

In the back is a large flat lawn perfect for the children to play on. A bit farther back is a large pond (a bit of a misnomer, as it's actually more of a miniature lake) with a cottage next to it, and a flower garden. Behind the cottage is a small vegetable patch.

There are six different types of demons: earth, wind, water, fire, electricity, and animal (known commonly as animus). Each type has a range of general colors found in their hair and eyes.

Earth~ greens, browns, tans

Wind~ whites, greys, pale blues and other light colors

Water~ blues, teals, greens; often have almost animal characteristics such as fins, tails, fin-like ears, and webbing between fingers and/or toes, etc.

Fire~ reds, oranges, some yellow

Electricity~ yellow, bright, neon colors

Animus~ almost any color, often have animal characteristics (wings, hooves, tails, etc.)

Since halfings are combinations of two of these types, certain combinations can have interesting results. For example, fire and wind could produce stronger than normal fire powers. Fire and earth could create glass. The possibilities are boundless.

All halflings goes through four stages of growth. Because they are demons they grow rapidly to maturity, then don't change appearance for a looooong time.

Toddler
You will first receive your child as a toddler.
All toddlers appear similar, because I draw them all in the same basic pose. They are each drawn individually though.

Child
Toddlers become children.
Each child looks completely unique. They are young and curious about the world around them. They each have a distinct personality and are starting to make friends.

Adolescent
Children become adolescents.
Each adolescent looks unique. Their personalities are more developed, but they still act childlike at times. They probably have a good friend or two by now.

Mature
Adolescents reach maturity and stop visibly aging.
Each mature halfling is unique. Their personalities are pretty much set and they act more like adults. They have most likely formed close bonds with those around them.

General
[-] Halflings are RP optional. However, RP is highly encouraged. You will only be able to breed if you RP.
[-] RP isn't mandatory, but you must still stop by the thread once a month or so, even if it's only to say hi. If you never stop in, your child will never grow. If you don't care then neither do I. XP
[-] There is a limit of three children per person. Only two of these children can be obtained through normal auctions/raffles/etc. Any others can be obtained through breeding/special events/etc.
[-] Rules shall be added as needed...

Role-Play
[-] RP can be done in your child's journal or in this thread.
[-] RP done in this thread takes place in the orphanage itself.
[-] RP in your journal can be in any form you like, be it roleplay with someone else or actual journal-type entries.
[-] All the children know Lyra at least by sight because she lives in the Orphanage. So when they meet up in RP there really shouldn't be any, "Hi, I'm ____, what's your name?"

Journal Info
[-] All halflings have a journal (even if you opt not to RP). The first two posts in it will be made by me. The first will be the basic "this journal belongs to..." post. The second will be the child's history (the same as from the auction/event thread). After that the rest of the posts are all yours.

FAQ

[Q] Can you RP here even if you don't have a child?
[A] You can RP here as long as you ask first and demonstrate that you can RP coherently. People who RP but don't actually have a halfling should generally play the role of a prospective parent.

[Q] Can you RP children from other shops here once you have adopted a children from the orphange?
[A] I have to go with no on this one. Using Athilin's mother as an example, Li has about a trillion other pets and children she's adopted. She has them interact with Athilin in her journal, but it can get very confusing to read unless you're familiar with all her other pets/children. I don't expect parents to know the other pets/children of other parents that come from out of this shop, so it would be complete bedlam. Interaction between your halfling and other pets/children is certainly encouraged, but it should be kept in the journal.

[Q] Are we free to RP children from here in other threads?
[A] As long as it's okay with the other shop/thread owner then I have absolutely no problem with it.

Breeding is done using life crystals. Halflings, like many cross-breeds, are unable to reproduce sexually. However, by fusing two life crystals together, a new halfling is created.

First you must have a breeding pass. Each breeding pass is good for one breeding- one pass per couple. Passes can be obtained through auctions, special events, etc. A pass entitles each half of the couple to a life crystal. The halfling then chooses which of its types it will channel into the crystal. Please note that the two crystals cannot have the same type. They simply will not fuse if they're the same type. So no fire/fire or water/water demons can result from breeding.

The crystals will fuse. At this point you can decide what you will do with the offspring. There will only be one child from each breeding. The guardians of the parents can do one of several things to do with the child at this point:
[-] choose which of them will keep it.
[-] co-'own' it (one guardian must be the designated RPer if the child is to be RPed).
[-] give it away to a friend.
[-] raffle it.
[-] auction it.
[-] sell it in some other way once recieving permission from me.
Please note that if you sell it half of the profits returns to the shop (cause I'm the one doing all the work!), and the remaining half gets split between the parents however they decide.

Children obtained through breeding will have an extra stage: infant. During this time they can't walk or talk, so they are very dependent on their guardian.

RULES

[-] There is no limit to the number of times a halfling can breed. They can only breed once a month max though, even if you have 5 trillion breeding passes.
[-] Male x Female, Male x Male, and Female x Female pairings are all fine as long as the two have been roleplayed so that such a pairing is plausible. (Would you have a kid with someone you never spend time with?)
[-] Breeding passes do not expire, so they don't have to be used right away. (I will only do one breeding at a time though.
[-] Halflings can only breed when they reach maturity.

CUSTOMS

After some deliberation I have decided to make customs available. However, they will be expensive. I don't want there to be many customs, but I want them to be available to those who are interested.

Here's the rundown: custom means you get to choose types, gender, appearance, powers, base personality. The only thing you don't choose is the child's background, although you can offer suggestions (I do not have to use them though).

First you have to fill out the form (see below), PM it to me and send the trade to this account (not Ceophan). If I need clarification on anything visually I'll contact you about it. When you fill out the form, fill it out (appearance-wise) as though it were for your child's mature stage. This is what I will draw, scan, and show you. Once you've okayed it I'll line and color it. If you okay that too then I will go on to draw/line/color and cert the child's toddler stage. They will grow like any other halfling, eventually arriving at the mature stage you okayed at the beginning.
