We've moved!!! Click HERE to be taken to the new GEN!!!

Hello, and welcome to the Gaian Exchange Network! We are only a very general, sometimes incorrect, price guide of the rares, uncommons, and other special types of items that are found in Gaia.

The G.E.N. does not support flaming of any type, including flaming of other price lists or their supporters. We encourage the use of other price lists along with the G.E.N. to improve pricing accuracy. You may wish to reference the Seraphic Item Nexus (S.I.N.) and/or the Estimated Value Item List (E.V.I.L.) Reloaded along with the G.E.N.

These Christmas presents/gift boxes are not rares, uncommons, donation letters, etc. They are containers of items, but they can contain anything. Do not allow yourself to be scammed; do not purchase these for the items they contain.

Note: Only major price guide updates are listed below. Changes can happen without notice as needed.
Have you see an auction that contradicts the price guide? Please post the auction URL and the item's name. We cannot count any sales/auctions/etc. if the URL is not posted.

Attention: As some feared, a bug has wiped out many of the price guide listings. It was not an April Fool's prank. We are currently in the process of restoring all of the data right now, but please bear with us and understand it will be a long process. In the meantime, If you are in dire need of a guide, you can access the GEN Database here.

question March 26, 2004 -- GEN's Ex-Stickyness and March Letters question
It was a decision by the mods to unsticky GEN and add a Price Guide sticky in fairness to both the JPG and the EVIL. We appreciate all of your comments, but this is not helping us at all. GEN will not die if we're not a sticky (and goodness knows we would never allow it), it just means we have to adjust a little to change. Just give this change some time. A final requst however; please stop the mod-bashing. A mod's duty is to do what's best for the users, and in this way, the wars over the GEN being stickied over the other guides can now cease.

March 22, 2004 -- Information on Kandy Korn Price Spike
The Kandy Korn Hat value spike was not a joke, though it is over now. Despite what has been said, the price spike occured when, quite suddenly, people began offering October letters and items on the hats. Afterwards, a pair of users carried out this false auction for 500k to make fun of the price spike. The price spike did not occur because of the false auction.
Jack item price updates made today may be more inaccurate than usual, but all threads observed did have unusually high prices (see p. 322 of this thread).

Anyone that has been linking to the G.E.N.'s banner will need to replace it. To make it fit signatures even better, it has been downsized to a width of 200 pixels. Unfortunately, the URL for the picture also changed.

Concerning the GEN...
The GENers
Q. Why even have a GEN? It controls the prices of everything!
A. The purpose of the GEN is not to control prices. We simply record the prices that we see in the Exchange and change our estimated values to fit those. If some people choose to quote the GEN in their own auctions, that is their choice.

Q. But someone just came into my auction and quoted the GEN. Isn't it your fault?
A. We do not encourage people to quote the GEN in the auctions of others; in fact, we discourage it. If the user feels that they must point out the GEN estimated value of some item, then he or she should carry it out by PM and not by posting under most circumstances.

Q. Will you sell me <insert item name here>?
A. No. We are not a store, an auction house, or a wanted thread. Buying and selling belongs in the Exchange, not here.

Q. What is a GENer?
A. A GENer, or member of the GEN, is someone who has been around the GEN for a while and/or has contributed to the GEN in some way. It is not like being in a guild or being part of the Blacklist's G.E.P.D.

Q. How can I become a GENer?
A. Be helpful in the GEN, don't spam here, don't bump here, and most of all: don't ask.

Q. How can I help the GEN?
A. Answer questions relating to the economy, keep on the subject of the economy as much as possible in the GEN thread, post links to auctions that may indicate a change in prices, and so on.

Q. How do I write/submit an essay?
A. Simply write about something concerning the economy in the Exchange. Make sure it is well written. Essays in all caps, very large letters, and l33t will not be linked on this page. Also, make it a decent length, as in more than one or two paragraphs.

Q. Why are the store items (or commons) not listed?
A. Store items have a fairly set price. Obviously, most buyers will not pay above the amount that the store sells the item for. (An exception to this is a user trying to get an item not of his or her own gender.) Most sellers want at least 75% of the store price because they can sell the item back to the store for that amount. Therefore, the price of commons is always 75%-100% of the store value.

Q. Why does the GEN update so slowly?
A. The GEN used to update fairly quickly, but no proof was shown; thread URLs were not posted as proof. People complained that the GEN was unreliable because it showed no proof. Because of that, we now show URLs when we update prices. Usually at least three URLs are given, but sometimes only one or two are for items very rarely auctioned. It takes longer to collect and analyze the threads than it did to simply observe the Exchange and update based on those observations.

The GENers
Disclaimer: The GEN is NOT always accurate. Prices change constantly, so items may sell for MORE or LESS than the estimated value of an item in the Exchange. We are only a guide and do not have to be taken strictly.

* A red asterisk by an item's Exchange Rate designates that it may sell for more to the store than it does in the Exchange.

Commons sell back to the stores for 75% of what they can be purchased for there; therefore, they are not listed as prices generally stay between the sellback price and the full price.

The price list works like this:
item image
item name
how item is obtained without buying it on the Exchange
Sellback: the price that the item can sell to the store for (may be more than estimated value)
Estimated Value: the estimated price at which the item might sell at in the Excange (may be less than sellback)
Gender: which gender(s) can equip the item on their avatars
Equip: which slot the item fills when equipped (if it can be equipped)
Comments: any extra information concerning the item
Last Checked On: the date that the estimated value was last changed or checked
Last Checked By: the GENer that last updated the item value

Tip: Since the price list is very long, use Ctrl + F to search for a specific item.

Want to write something for me to add? Go ahead and post it here! If it has a title and is written fairly well with good spelling, we will be sure to add it. Just be sure that it is related to the Gaian economy or the Exchange itself, not just to the items involved or to Gaia in general.
Please avoid using quotations, smileys, and excessively bright colors.
Try to make it longer than a paragraph.

Concerning the Exchange...
The GENers
Q. What can I buy/sell in the Exchange?
A. You can buy or sell any Gaian item, from the store or otherwise. (Most people will not buy store items at full price.)

Q. What can I not buy/sell in the Exchange.
A. You cannot sell yourself, your soul, art, pets, or other non-Gaian items. Selling yourself/your soul belongs in Charity; it cannot so much as imply sexual favors, and you should not buy someone to receive sexual favors. Buying/selling art, pets, and other signature images belongs in the Mini Shops subforum, unless they meet the specifications of Breedable/Changing Pets subforum. You should not buy/sell items from outside of Gaian (including objects from real life), and you should not buy Gaian items with real money.

Q. 1k? 1g? What's the difference?
A. Letters are used in place of long numbers or to show the value of numbers. "k" is short for "kilo," which stands for 1000. 1k equals 1000, 2k equals 2000, and so on. Any number followed by k should be multiplied by 1000. "g" is simply short for "gold." For example, 1g equals 1 gold.

Q. What is a "scam"?
A. A "scam" is when someone wrongfully cheats another user out of gold or items. Scammers may be banned depending on the severity of the offense. For example, trying to sell a regular headband from the store as a halo would be a scam.

Q. What is a bump?
A. A "bump" (also said to mean "bring up my post" wink brings the thread it is posted in to the top of the first page of the forum.

Q. What is spam?
A. "Spam n. Unnecessary comments posted in a thread that are not conducive to discussion and used just to gain gold and annoy others. (Hence, spam belongs in the Chatterbox). In other words, idiotic comments that someone posts just to annoy other users or display that user's own ignorance (or in some cases, stupidity)..." -Aquafire
Also stands for Short, Pointless, Annoying Message.

Q. Why do prices change from time to time?
A. Users help determine prices. What they are willing to buy at determines what the price will sell at. Also, the supply determines prices. If there are many of one item, then the price is likely to stay low because the number of people willing to pay a high price for an item readily available decreases.

Q. I can't add items to my side of the trade! Why?
A. You probably need a trading pass. To get a trading pass, go to Gambino by clicking the orange arrow above the Barton Town map. Then, go to the bank of Gambino. It is the green building to the right of the stores. There will be an option to buy a trading pass. Trading passes cost 500 gold and never need to be renewed.

Q. What's the point of paying 500 gold for a trading pass?
A. It prevents users from creating new accounts simply to send the starting gold to their original account.

Q. I have a question about how to get donation items...
A. Questions about donations? Ask here! (Donation FAQ)
To get a letter for the current month, donate $2.50 US or more to Gaia through PayPal, check, or money order. Their mailing address is given in the FAQ linked to at the top right hand corner of the page, and the PayPal button is on the front page of Gaia under the ad banners. If you cannot donate real money, the letter or the items can most likely be purchased in the Exchange if you have enough gold.

Concerning the Items...
The GENers
Q. Why isn't X item in the store?
A. There are several possible reasons. It could be an item listed here on the GEN. Any item listed here is not available in the stores. It could be an item for the opposite gender. A user can only see items for his/her gender or for both genders in the store. Also, you might not have checked all the stores. Barton Boutique, Gambino Outfitters, and Gambino Hat Rack are the three stores currently in Gaia. To get to Gambino, go to the map and click on the orange arrow.

Q. What's "sellback?"
A. "Sellback" is the GEN term for what the store will give in exchange for selling an item there.

Q. Why can't I sell X item to the store?
A. Any item with a sellback of 0 gold cannot be sold to the store. Also, your browser may have a bug where the inventory is covered up while in the store. You may need a different browser.

Q. Commons? Rares? Uncommons? What's the difference?
A. A common is a store-purchased item. A rare is found inside a giftbox; an uncommon is found inside a trunk. Calling anything but a rare a rare is misleading and confusing in the Exchange.

Q. What are the different equips/layers?
A. The known equips or layers are head, eyes, ears, face, mouth, neck, none (which I refer to as shoulders), upper body, upper garment, none (which I refer to as back), hands, right hand, left hand, none (which I refer to as waist), lower garment, lower body, behind, legs, none (which I call lower leg), feet, useable item, and none (which I refer to as a unusable item). Only one item can be placed in each equip slot at a time, and useable/nonusable items cannot be equipped.

Q. Will event/donation items be re-released?
A. The admins have stated that donation items will never be re-released. No one knows for sure about the event items, but one mod had this to say:
cattchan
Only the admins know what the Easter items will be, but they won't do anything to destroy the value of the chickies or bunnies. If you want to place a bid, your investment should be safe.

Q. How/when/where were rose corsages/black bow ties given out? What/when was the 1st Annual Gaia Formal Ball? Will there be another one?
A. The rose corsages and black bow ties were given out in Gaia's first pink giftboxes on March 7-8, 2003. Anyone on the site during the event could easily find one. The event was user-organized, but free to attend: the First Annual Gaia Formal Ball. It was Gaia's first big user-organized event, and the thread size (186 pages) was considered very big, especially for a no-spamming topic, back when Gaia was not even a month old. Misao organized the event, but she never asked for any support from the admins beyond stickying the thread. Misao has also stated that she will not organize a second ball. Gaia has grown too large, and its users have grown greedy.

Q. How were the Easter Eggs found?
A. The Easter Eggs appeared on the screen like a giftbox soon after a user logged on during Easter. If the user did not like the item inside, then s/he could get another chance at finding an Easter Egg.

Q. What was the Trick-or-Treating on Halloween?
A. Every 20 minutes passed or 15 posts made on Gaia (whichever was the soonest), any user dressed in at least one Halloween costume could pick one of two candies from one of the three stores. After three candies had been collected, a visit to the inventory/profile page would result in a visit from Jack. Depending on the three candies picked, Jack would leave behind a certain grab bag. Here are the combinations, based on a guide made by Valen's Apprentice with the help of others:
Grab Bag 1 = Raspberry Candy + Blueberry Candy + Lemon Candy = Jacked-Up Shirt
Grab Bag 2 = Lime Candy + Lemon Candy + Raspberry Candy = Jacked-Up Shoes
Grab Bag 3 = Lemon Candy + Blueberry Candy + Grape Candy = Jacked-Up Pants
Grab Bag 4 = Lime Candy + Lemon Candy + Grape Candy = Jacked-Up Gloves
Grab Bag 5 = Cherry Candy + Blueberry Candy + Raspberry Candy = Jack's Anger
Grab Bag 6 = Cherry Candy + Raspberry Candy + Lime Candy = Jack's Despair
Grab Bag 7 = Cherry Candy + Grape Candy + Blueberry Candy = Pumpkin Stump
Grab Bag 8 = Cherry Candy + Grape Candy + Lime Candy = Kandy Korn Hat

Q. How were Jolly Hats/Santa's Gifts found?
A. After logging in on the 25th of December, most (but not all) users found Santa's Gift in their inventory. There was no searching involved.

Q. What were the Barton Charities?
A. The Barton Charities (which currently does not accept donations) were like a game of chance. A donation of a giftwrapped store item worth 500 gold or more received a random item in return. Most often, the item was a Christmas Charity Gift.

Q. How were the First Anniversary Gaia Ball items given out?
A. To obtain the Paper Part Hat and Noise Maka, one simply needed to enter Gambino's Mansion. Gino, Gambino's son, would appear at the top of the screen with a greeting, and then one could find both party favors in one's inventory. For the Gaia shirts, a user would randomly run into Ian (who gave out the S Gaia Shirt), Sasha (who gave out the M Gaia Shirt), or Ruby (who gave out the XL Gaia Shirt) while attending the ball. One user would only encounter one of the non-playable characters (NPCs), though there was initially a glitch that allowed for multiple encounters.

Q. How was the Mail from Gambino given out?
A. Users logged on to Gaia on March 3, 2004, and simply found the letter in their inventory. It was only given out to those that went to Gambino's Mansion during the First Anniversary Gaia Ball.

Q. How were the G Pins given out?
A. On March 6 and 7, 2004, a user who visited the Second Annual Gaia Ball forum could randomly run into Gino, who would give them the G Pin.
