I love using sex in my writing. Not just because it allows me to deal with the emotions and reprocussions of it, but I think that people are simply at their most interesting and volatile when they're in a post-coital state.

Well, That's not JUST why I love doing it. It allows me to also destroy cliches, by seeming to write a pornographic story, when instead I'm exposing the characters. You can make a sex scene be about the characters, if you're a good enough writer.

But it's an interesting thing. When cruising through the writer's forum, I read someone's signature (Not naming names), and it said "For no smut writing, no exceptions!", or something like that. I started thinking about this person, and how if they don't even bother to touch upon sex, and what it does to characters, Well, they can't be very well practiced in exploring what I believe to be one of the most important subjects in writing, now can they?

Well, I'm not really sure. So, Discuss.

How important is sex in your writing?
Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?
How do you use sex in your writing?
How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?
Well, I used to use it a lot since I wrote yaoi fanfics whee I use it...well, because I can.

And as for the sig you saw, that would probably be Tachirou's. ( Proud believer in no-sex, no-smut fiction... under ANY circumstances. If you're a believer, copy and paste this into your signature.) Be prepared for her onslaught, because it's a given she'll show up here and try to convert us all.

The sig I'M referring to isn't Tachirou's.

But... She sounds... interesting.

Edit: Although it IS the same signature. I guess the person I'm thinking of copied and pasted, or something.

Most often I allude away from the sexual scene, as more stories are usually intended for audiences under the age of 21 or even 18. I don't need them to express the love of my characters, but when I do add them, they aren't as descriptive, rather elusive to paint the image in detail. I'll admit though, I have written a few adult stories, but I rather not go into it. sweatdrop

Hmm. Never seen the sig of the person you're referring to, then. I thought Tachirou was the only one of that mindset around here.
personally it's not important really during my writing. love- yes.
reprocussions of it hurting relationships- yes.
but otherwise i dont write about it. not my style.
Wow...another non-smut believer, other than Tachirou?

How important is sex in your writing?
Not very, at the moment. Currently, I'm just writing things about the effects of death. Not death of humans, either, but deaths of strangers, and pets, etc. It's not morbid - well, one story is, but that was an exception. Sex, at the current moment, only affects supporting characters.

Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?
Very. I don't know why. I just think it's important for a person who calls themselves a writer to be able to write prose, poetry, plays, and if possible, lyrics. When dealing with subject matter, I come to a grey area. It's important for one to think of many things, but it's also important that one writes about what they consider important.

How do you use sex in your writing?
So far, one side character has sex before he's ready, and another couple who just enjoy it.

How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?
Pornography would just be writing about sex, while a sexual story explores sexual themes.

In most cases, you probably don't need to describe the actual intercourse, if you're just writing about the effects of sex. What you do not write about is just as interesting as what you do write. Sometimes, sex reveals things about a character's personality. Sex does tend to magnify issues, as well as trust, and things like that.

I don't think I can handle sex in my stories, truth be told. I just don't have much control over how my stories sound, and there isn't a need for it.
How important is sex in your writing?
Very. My characters are always horny.

Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?
No.

How do you use sex in your writing?
Sex between boys or sex between a boy and a man. Once in a while, the man is the boy's father. Usually it is rape or a character's fantasy. Mainly a way to show characters' rage/aggression/etc. Very rarely does someone actually decide to have sex, because I don't see how they would want to make such a decision.

How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?
I don't bother with differentiating them.

It might have been Scott Daeonse. Does that ring a bell? (of course, his says pro- instead of no-, so that's probably not it either xp ) Either way, I didn't really answer the questions in-depth the first time.

How important is sex in your writing?
It depends on the story, really. Sometimes it's a side thing, sometimes the whole plot revolves around it.

Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?
Yes.

How do you use sex in your writing?
As sex. Err...as gratutious?

How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?
Purpose, exactly. Porn doesn't have purpose except to be porn.

Nope.

That's not it, either.

Look through some of the threads, and you might find her.

But, as I said, I'm not disclosing names.
How important is sex in your writing?

It's both very important and not really important at all. I guess it really depends on the type of story, the character and the situation. It's kinda difficult to explain, but I'll give it a shot.

In some character relationships, sex is just something that happens. It's a natural progression in their relationship and therefore not really a big deal to the story. Other times, sex plays an important role. It can act as a catalyst for a situation, or solve a problem. I've had characters look for comfort in sex and I've dealt with how sex can change a relationshp. So, yeah. I use sex as an important part of my stories, but, as I said before, sometimes it is just a natural part of the relationship.

Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?

Uh...kinda. In general, I don't write in areas that I'm not comfortable in, mainly becuase I've always found that it's fairly apparent if the author isn't really comfortable with their content. On the other hand, I have gotten story ideas that invovle genres that I'm not as good with (like mystery and action) and subsequently had to overcome my problems with them. So I think it's important to be willing to write outside of one's comfort zone, but being practiced is maybe not as important.

How do you use sex in your writing?

I pretty much covered this in the first question. It can be both a plot point/device or it can just be a part of the character's relations.

Though I have to admit that I don't actually tend to write full sex scenes. Usually the character slam the door in face at some point (sometimes literally).

How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?

In a sexual story, the sex is a part of the plot rather than the plot being about the sex. To rephrase, the sex is there to advance the story or tell the story, but it does have actual purpose. At least, that's how I think about it.

-How important is sex in your writing?
Depends on the story. Often times, its not important but can provide as levage to further a story on many levels. For me, my reads, and my imagination. So it's how my story is going, how important it is.

-Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with?
Yes and no. As long as you have a general handle on what your doing experience isn't needed but is usually better.

-How do you use sex in your writing?
Meaningly. I use it to provide a stimulant for those reading it to grasp the feeling that they are sharing as they have it.

-How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose?
Easy. Basic layup of a story. If a story just leads to flat out sex. Its a word pornography. But if it has a meaning as f they were in love or something. Thats different.
Oh dear god no...

Well I'll just save Tachirou the time.

What she would say.
Gratoutious sex in writing is bad, sinful, imoral, and makes a writer a hack, even if he had sold millions of copies of his book. Of course, it's perfectly fine if you only lead up to it but don't show anything of it period, including the emotional prospects that happen during such a scene. Now I must overuse certain emo-cons. rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes rolleyes

Most of the regulars reply
We whole heartly believe that everything Tachirou just said is complete bullshit. Please disregard all comments made because of her personal morality which she believes is a deciding factor within literature. Let us all rejoice that literature, and Nabokov in general, has disproven her arguement for us.

And now neither side has to reply thus saving us five pages of arguements.

Aww. Isn't that sweet? That makes me proud of you. *bow*

Heh. Any whojowhatsitis, for some odd reason, I am not aroused by sex. Not in the least. Romance, maybe, but sex? Eh... It just doesn't ring a bell, so to say. But hey, that's me.

How important is sex in your writing? It is moderately important. Intercourse is a way to releive stress for anybody, of any race. It was meant to both be pleasurable AND serve the purpose of procreation. Yay for sex!
Eh. Really, truthfully, it matters on the society it's set in. There is a BIG difference between modern day New York and ancient Greece.
Is it important to be practiced in types of writing that you're not exactly comfortable working with? Yes. I beleive so. You need to make sure you have a grip on all sorts of emotions and the such, or at least a very open mind and willingness to do alot of research, for writing to be good. Now, it's hard to beleive that someone's life can be just plain morbid and a constant downer. I mean, if the character/person sees it that way, they are BLIND, because not everything is as horrible as it may first seem to be. And as cliche as it seems, you can always find light in the dark. Haha. *points and laughs at the cliche*
How do you use sex in your writing? Eh... partially to envoke emotion, but I don't go into it graphically. If I go into it in that manner, it makes me want to barf. Plus, when there is the choice of giving a very clear hint that they have had sexual intercourse between describing every detail-- I'll go for skimming and hinting.
How do you differentiate pornography, from a sexual story with a purpose? Pornography is meant to please the senses and to stimulate a person. A sexual story may deal more with the after-effects and emotions of the characters involved, or--GASP-- have an actual plot. Don't you dare quote me on that, though.

Eh.. *shrug* Sex is a part of life. It isn't some monster getting ready to attack you. It is something that desperately needs to be accepted by society.

See, I don't particularly agree with that. Stories can begin with 'flat out sex' without establishing emotions first, and instead, during the act, characters and feelings can be established by how the sex is performed, certain nuances, things said... all of that.
