Ashram - Well, your argument's an obvious one: pick out any random 'influential' individual and ask if the person knows him or her and if they don't, it doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. The difference between your example and mine is scope. Buddy Guy, while being a musical influence, did just that: influenced music. It's pop culture and is more of a trivia question than a matter of importance. And yes, you read that correctly. Physics and mathematics, which are real, are more important than culture, which is created by humans. One attempts to explain reality, the other creates its own facts. I might ask you who the author of The Princess Bride was, but then my example would be the same as yours. Stephen Hawking did not influence the blues (Buddy Guy), he did not write a book about a beautiful princess (William Goldman) and he did not get arrested last week for drunken driving (Nicole Richie - more factoids). He's working to explain the universe, which I hold in considerably higher esteem than entertainers. What I was asking my coworkers wasn't a memory test and it wasn't impromptu Jeopardy; it was a test of priorities. I prioritize the attempted understanding of the universe over pop culture. They did not. I consider that stupid.
The only possible argument that would I accept would have been, "Tell me what he does. Oh, well, I don't know him specifically, but I can tell you exactly what Hideki Yukawa did to earn the Noble Peace prize in that field."
Memai - There was a Hunny-senpai cosplayer?! Please tell me you got pics of that...somehow. Other than that, congrats on making it through the con! I'm sure you'll be big soon. whee
Alucard - Yay college apps! Have fun with that. As far as the whole trading thing goes...that would be cool if it weren't for the fact that I'm extremely paranoid and don't give out my name and address. Ever. In my mind, you could STILL be a middle-aged creep who's been masquerading as a teenager for the past couple of years. o.O One never knows.
(Joking.)
(I guess.)
Koji - What fun is THAT? xd Presents should have stuff in them, even if it's only rocks.
Laitue - You've, um, got some serious cumulonimbus goin' on up there.
Shiro - Excellent. I always liked walking dictionaries.
EDIT: Reply 17000, which means Memai got post 17000! heart

You know, every now and then, when the Gaia announcement thing lights up, there's a flicker of hope and I think, "Oh, OK. One last time, just in case it's interesting." No. Never. When will I learn?
Ashram - Wait, wait. Astrology? Or astronomy? Is this another random field from which factoids are drawn? Astrology isn't science; astronomy is.
If people don't prioritize understanding reality, it makes them less intelligent - or at least exposes some poor priorities. Attempting to explain the universe seems like a pretty important part of understanding reality. Actually, your argument really makes you sound more personally insulted than dismayed by my narrow-mindedness. Think you'd feel the same if you'd known who he was?
Culture is a byproduct of man; everything else can exist without us. Seems pretty simple to me. The properties behind mathematics and physics will always be present, governing the universe, whether or not we are here to interpret them.
And, if you'd like me to repeat myself, just so you can come away with a feeling of clean justification: my opinion on this is unwavering. If that makes me an elitist, opinionated b***h, so be it.
Memai - o.O!!!! Ohmyfriggingosh. Copy? Maybe? Puppy eyes?
Akahoshi - I was reading your post at work and actually called my coworker over to tell her your story. She started laughing out loud. We're with you on this one. That idiot.
P.S. Oh my god. I love Google image search. (No comments, Koji. This is an exception.)
