Whew, Christmas break at last. I especially love kicking it off with my internet being down for a day and a half -_-; Apparently my neighbor got cable yesterday and the dumbass that installed it unplugged ours in the process. Anyway, I was wondering whether any of you guys would be interested in trading cards, or even small gifts if you so desire. I'm not asking you to spend money unless for some reason you want to. PM me if you'd like to arrange something like that.

Now, off to work on college apps xp

I've learned the hard way NEVER to trust an elf, no matter their size. o__o; (just. don't. ask. x__x)

and for a moment, when you said 'burning king' I totally read that as 'burger king' ... yes, my face also went eek then gonk question when I double take'd the sentence. :'D

A.D. :: No problem. 3nodding I like making myself useful at random for no reason. o__o;

Ashram :: ...... too easy talk2hand (at least for me sweatdrop ) but I do get your (rather blunt) point. (:

Laitue :: winter break is fun. :'C I really hope all of you can spend your holidays the way you want them. (be it with friends, family or alone) ... and not like me...which I'll spend working...doing graveyard shifts on the 24th, 25th, birthday (29th) 30th, 31st, and 1st of January crying [and if that weren't enough, I'll also di graveyard shift on a 'x-mas-y' day celebration in Puerto Rico, known as the Three Kings day (jan 6th) ] crying

Ashram - Well, your argument's an obvious one: pick out any random 'influential' individual and ask if the person knows him or her and if they don't, it doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. The difference between your example and mine is scope. Buddy Guy, while being a musical influence, did just that: influenced music. It's pop culture and is more of a trivia question than a matter of importance. And yes, you read that correctly. Physics and mathematics, which are real, are more important than culture, which is created by humans. One attempts to explain reality, the other creates its own facts. I might ask you who the author of The Princess Bride was, but then my example would be the same as yours. Stephen Hawking did not influence the blues (Buddy Guy), he did not write a book about a beautiful princess (William Goldman) and he did not get arrested last week for drunken driving (Nicole Richie - more factoids). He's working to explain the universe, which I hold in considerably higher esteem than entertainers. What I was asking my coworkers wasn't a memory test and it wasn't impromptu Jeopardy; it was a test of priorities. I prioritize the attempted understanding of the universe over pop culture. They did not. I consider that stupid.

The only possible argument that would I accept would have been, "Tell me what he does. Oh, well, I don't know him specifically, but I can tell you exactly what Hideki Yukawa did to earn the Noble Peace prize in that field."

Memai - There was a Hunny-senpai cosplayer?! Please tell me you got pics of that...somehow. Other than that, congrats on making it through the con! I'm sure you'll be big soon. whee

Alucard - Yay college apps! Have fun with that. As far as the whole trading thing goes...that would be cool if it weren't for the fact that I'm extremely paranoid and don't give out my name and address. Ever. In my mind, you could STILL be a middle-aged creep who's been masquerading as a teenager for the past couple of years. o.O One never knows.

(Joking.)

(I guess.)

Koji - What fun is THAT? xd Presents should have stuff in them, even if it's only rocks.

Laitue - You've, um, got some serious cumulonimbus goin' on up there.

Shiro - Excellent. I always liked walking dictionaries.

EDIT: Reply 17000, which means Memai got post 17000! heart

AD>> So what ... your list of priorities is ... better? More important? What? If people don't prioritize science astrology high on the top of their list of interest it makes them less of an intelligent person?

If my interest was in science astrology, then yes, I should know who Stephen Hawkings is. If my interest was in Blues, then I should know who Buddy Guy is. But if my interest is not in science astrology, why should I know the name Stephen Hawkings? How is not possible to not remember such a common name I've maybe heard twice? Or even three, four, five, six or ten times?

"Physics and mathematics are real and are more important than cultures which were created by man." That's awfully simplistic and opinionated. Physics and mathematics were created by man to try and explain the universe. "No, they were discovered by man." Either way it was human thought and human explanation given to explain what was created/discovered.

Hah, well, I don't have one of the cosplayer actually poking the bear, BUT! I think one of the girls managed to grab a snapshot of the Ouran group dancing along to the karaoke singers on stage XD

Ok I must tell this story now while it is still funny. Now like I've said I work at a bookstore so funny/interesting things don't really happen to often and even if they do I'm normally the cause of it but today I wasn't. Since I'm on winter break I get to work more and open the store which I did, now there isn't to much traffic between 8:30am and 12:00pm I'm not sure way people must not like to read before lunch. But around 10:30am this girl comes into the store and I saw her the previous week because I sold her a book, so I figure she's just looking for another book. Apparently this was not the case she comes up to the counter and tells me she'd like to return the book, now this is not a common practice at in a book store but I figured maybe there was a defect in the book. (It happens)

So this is when I start to ask way she wants to return it expecting to hear pages are missing or repeating or something along those lines, this was not the case. She tells me with a straight face the she read the book and didn't like it and would like a refund. At that point after hearing that I had to actually bite my tongue some I wouldn't laugh in her face. I told her that you can't return a book after you read it, and if you want to do that you should go to a library. At which point she gave me that you b***h look and walked out. Once she left I started laughing and didn't stop until my co-worker came, so I told her and we both started laughing, and now on my lunch break I'm still laughing.

I mean who the hell does that read a book and then want to return it and get there money back. She had to have been in High School so she couldn't have been that dumb but she was. So Now I'm tempted to me a sign telling people if they buy a book and read it they can't return it, because you never know if it'll happen again.

Anyway that happening has made my year. And I'm going back to work now.

You know, every now and then, when the Gaia announcement thing lights up, there's a flicker of hope and I think, "Oh, OK. One last time, just in case it's interesting." No. Never. When will I learn?

Ashram - Wait, wait. Astrology? Or astronomy? Is this another random field from which factoids are drawn? Astrology isn't science; astronomy is.

If people don't prioritize understanding reality, it makes them less intelligent - or at least exposes some poor priorities. Attempting to explain the universe seems like a pretty important part of understanding reality. Actually, your argument really makes you sound more personally insulted than dismayed by my narrow-mindedness. Think you'd feel the same if you'd known who he was?

Culture is a byproduct of man; everything else can exist without us. Seems pretty simple to me. The properties behind mathematics and physics will always be present, governing the universe, whether or not we are here to interpret them.

And, if you'd like me to repeat myself, just so you can come away with a feeling of clean justification: my opinion on this is unwavering. If that makes me an elitist, opinionated b***h, so be it.

Memai - o.O!!!! Ohmyfriggingosh. Copy? Maybe? Puppy eyes?

Akahoshi - I was reading your post at work and actually called my coworker over to tell her your story. She started laughing out loud. We're with you on this one. That idiot.

P.S. Oh my god. I love Google image search. (No comments, Koji. This is an exception.)

I liiive. ninja (Although that's debatable, really.) And I've survived my first semester of college, which is a nice bonus to...uh... living and all. I feel terrible for disappearing on you guys all the time, though.

AD - Oh lord. That picture shows the truth. D:

Hoshi - I really have nothing I can possibly say to that except that I'm glad I don't have a job where I have to deal with people like that. xd

Memai - Congrats on your con-debut! heart

Laitue - This month's donation items = love. Although having three items in one letter is an obvious ploy for extra money, but... you've still gotta love them. whee

Oh, and, um... sorry for bringing my obnoxious auction banner sig in here. It seems like whenever I make a comeback to Gaia, I end up doing one. My friends made me do it this time, I swear. sweatdrop

AD>> Random mix up of terms. I blame Houston ... or the Jetsons. stressed

And yeah, I do kind of feel insulted when someone tells me they lose respect for me because I don't know the name of one astronomer. If I'd known who he was, the conversation probably wouldn't have happened.

Understanding reality is fine and dandy, but there are multiple ways of doing so and the name "Stephen Hawkings" doesn't even come up. Stephen Hawkings is not the "end all, be all" of understanding reality. Cause for alarm should arise when you start meeting people who don't know who Newton or Einstein are, to name two.

My new hobby is watching the flame wars over at IMDB regarding Eragon. I merely wish that Dr. Sanjay Gupta read some of that prior to proclaiming Paolini a "creative genius." Tch. (For those who don't know what's going on, I made a blog 'specially for my rage. Sig-ways.)

IYOUZ! - Excellent to see you! You're really going to have to figure out how to balance college and Gaia. We miss you, stupid! heart

I laughed out loud for about thirty seconds (try it - it's a long time) when I found it. It makes me feel so much better about the world.

Edit: And...aw... I can't afford IyouArt. Blasted inflation and my lack of interest in the Gaia economy.

Ashram - As ridiculous as the Jetsons are, I desperately want a fold-up car. And a robot that serves tea.

He isn't the reigning force in science, but he IS damn close. One cannot read anything about the current state of the universe's exploration without coming across his name. I find it alarming when people do not. Ah, well. I'll just use it as incentive to quit, which would be good for me regardless of the reasons.
PostPosted: Mon Dec 18, 2006 9:35 pm
AD>> Robots serving tea is most certainly a dandy idea. As are fold-up cars.

Last thing science related I did was college level ... hated every minute of the Lab work because I got stuck with a "weeder" teacher who wanted the whole class to know the classifications of plants down to the sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-subkingdom. xp After that it was, "Screw this! I'm sticking to Literature."

So, in a way, I may be forever turned off to science.

Iyou>> Still alive?!

Knew I should have gone with the silver bullets.

Yay! biggrin

Agreed. gonk

I know, I suck. I usually get scared away from Gaia for long periods of time because I owe someone something (90% of the time, art) and they're either being really obnoxious or I make a commitment I can't follow through with. But not this time! Iron-fisted don't-take-no-sheeyat Iyou is back and... uh... ready for action.

Ashram - Thankies. whee

Next time, try garlic instead.
