Haruhi remained quiet a few minutes longer. As Kyoya mentioned that they were farther from home that though, she groaned inwardly. She shook her head and sighed, trying to settle her resolve, at least for the time being. She needed to keep as level a head as possible. After everything the neighbor kids had told her, surely there had to be a way to get home.

She was so grateful the lab assistant was so helpful and without questions. Then again, she wouldn’t even know how she would begin to explain things. She watched the assistant walk out of the room and without looking at Kyoya, she spoke softly, “Quite a predicament we find ourselves in, huh?”

She wasn’t really looking for a response and the assistant came back in before she could hear one. She held a small brown leather suitcase. Following suit, she knew she wouldn’t be able to tell what was in any of them, “Can I ask what is in each of them?”

The assistant smiled, “Of course.” She said as she released all six of them. It was quite a sight, they were definitely something that Haruhi could only dream of. “Marill, Eevee, Sandile, Abra, Fletchling, and Shinx. None of these are actually native to the Hoenn region, but they’ve managed to make it their home.” She said with a proud smile. “Honestly we’ve been seeing a lot of pokemon from other regions, it’s one of the reasons Professor Birch is out in the field even more than usual.”

Haruhi bent down and rested her elbows on her knees, “I think I like you.” She said as she pointed at the Eevee. The Eevee yipped and jumped into her arms, licking her cheek. “Well Kyoya-senpai. Which one do you think would suit you?”

The very idea of needing to travel with a small monster-like creature for your own safety was frankly something Kyouya was still trying to deal with. It drove home the point — hard — that his bodyguards were nowhere in sight. The thought was disquieting.

He studied each of the creatures in turn, thoughtfully. He'd never been particularly good with animals, and felt that something with a mild temperament was probably going to be the best choice for him. Though it wasn't like he could tell that just by looking. Or could he? Of the six that had been released, five of them were quite active, and one of them, a strange cross between a lizard, fox, and humanoid, still seemed to be sleeping. Still, something left him questioning that sixth ... what was it?

It's floating, he realized. Just hovering in mid-air, asleep. How is that even possible? Curiosity propelled him to take a single step closer. It opened one eye a sliver, before apparently deciding Kyouya was no threat and closing it again.

Truth be told, Kyouya had no idea how these Pokémon were supposed to help them travel, but at least perhaps this one would not be in the way. That train of thought was immediately derailed as it disappeared with a *pop* in front of his eyes, and a moment later, a small but substantial weight settled on his shoulder. He glanced past the frame of his glasses, and caught three-toed clawed feet, of the same tawny brown as had been in front of him. He turned to look at the Abra more fully.

"Ab-RA," it said firmly, and Kyouya had no idea what to say to that in return, aside from turning to Haruhi and noting wryly, "I'm not sure it's a question of suiting me any more." He lifted an eyebrow at the researcher. "Is this common behavior for Abra?"

Okay, his ignorance was showing. Better to look briefly stupid now, though, than to act stupid down the line. The researcher cheerfully informed him that yes, of course, as a Psychic-type Pokémon, Abra naturally did all sorts of things that an Ootori would usually deem impossible, and that it seemed to have taken an interest in him, if not a liking. It was hard to tell with Abras since they slept so much, and could even fight in their sleep.

Fight in their sleep. Right. He made sure to ask the researcher about the proper care and feeding of the creature, though who knew what they'd be able to do for food. As if on cue, his stomach growled. Of all the times. He tried to ignore it.

"Well, I think we'll get along well enough." He hoped anyway. "Thank you again for your assistance, Miss Vera. I'm grateful." He collected the Abra's Pokéball at her urging, made a mental note that taking it apart to see how it worked would probably be a bad idea, and looked over to Haruhi. "Well ... are we ready?"

Haruhi watched as she could see Kyoya analyzing the exterior characteristics of each pokemon, which was normal for him. She almost wondered how exactly he thought, but knew it had to be careful consideration. This was one trait she admired about Kyoya, he was hardly ever impulsive and it was refreshing from Tamaki's crazy antics every now and again.

She listened to the brief information about the Abra, actually quite intrigued with the fact that it could bend the laws of physics. The idea was preposterous, but she thought it actually suited Kyoya, a psychic type. Her brows furrowed together, 'Well, I already think he can read minds sometimes...' she thought with an inner sigh at the thought.

At the talk of proper care, she glanced down at the pokeball in her hand, she pretty much assumed an Abra and Eevee needed different care, but that could be also figured out along the way. She had to stifle a snicker at the fact she could hear Kyoya's stomach. She was surprised hers wasn't growling as well, but she blamed it on her nerves.

At the mention of leaving, she nodded her head, "Yes." She turned to the assistant and bowed her head, "Thank you very much Miss Vera. It was a pleasure meeting you." She said, ending with a smile. As they turned to leave, the assistant called out, "By the way, that Eevee has many hidden potentials!" She said with a smile. Haruhi raised her eyebrow in curiosity, but smiled and continued our the door.

"Hrm. That was interesting. People are really nice here it seems." She said with a hint of relief. She looked up at Kyoya, "I guess our best bet would be to follow the route to the north of the town to...Oldale?" She said trying to recall.

"She was very kind, and yes, that seems like the best idea for now," he concurred. Kyouya scanned the immediate area. It wasn't all that large, and there was a prominent sign for Route 101 a block away, so they headed that direction. When they were out of earshot of the researcher, he slowed slightly, tucking his hands into the pockets of his pajamas. His fingers automatically curled around the small lump of the Pokéball.

Route 101 didn't seem all that long, though, and as they wandered through the grass, another small town popped up on the horizon, along with a few other people traversing the route here and there.

"Needless to say, this is a little hard to swallow," he noted softly, after several minutes of walking. "I don't dream, Haruhi. So unless I'm ill and having a feverish episode, I am having to take this at face value, and I find it absurd, not to mention painful on the feet." He, too, was barefoot, and without his security blankets — laptop, phone, and notebook. He didn't want to think about that.

"Oldale Town is a good first target, but getting back home is going to be a difficult task, since we don't know how we got here and I'm unsure if it's even safe to look a little lost." The researcher had been friendly and generous enough, but Kyouya wondered if their luck would hold. It was his experience that there were always people that would seek to take advantage of others. "Perhaps we'll be lucky and the Professor will be as helpful as Miss Vera." It was said matter-of-factly, almost cheerfully, but concealed underneath was a small current of doubt. Kyouya had skepticism ingrained, but at least for now, he intended to put a confident face forward.

The walk through route 101 wasn't all that different than wandering around earlier in the forest and grassy area. For a route, it wasn't as straight forward as she thought it would be. Haruhi was careful to watch out for other pokemon as they called them, and sharp rocks in the grass.

The silence between them wasn't anything abnormal, but considering what was happening, she was happy when Kyoya broke that silence. She listened, nodding her head in understanding, "While I do dream every now and again, this is nothing like before." She rubbed at her arms absently. She didn't want to admit just how unnerving this really was to her. She was used to dealing with things her own way, on her own. She imagined this had to be just as difficult for Kyoya since he was very self-sustaining himself. She glanced up at him, "I am glad we're not alone in this." She said as she turned her attention back toward where she was walking.

She could see the outskirts of Oldale now; it wasn’t that long of a route as she had anticipated. Somewhere, she was grateful. Maybe it was the fact her feet couldn’t take much more of this. She stopped short however when a raccoon looking creature jumped out of the grass and darted passed them. It had brown and white striped fur and her eyebrow raised as it dashed into nearby grass and was gone. “What…?” She muttered as someone approached from the same direction it came from.

A man with brown hair stood scratching his head with a slightly puzzled expression. “Now, I wonder why it ran off like that.” He said aloud to no one in particular. He patted the sides of his white jacket, looking for a notebook that was in one of the front pockets. Haruhi quickly noted his white coat was the same type as the one Miss Vera was wearing. She looked up at Kyoya for a second, wondering if this was who they were looking for.

“Excuse me, are you Professor Birch?” She said with a smile. He turned his attention towards the two strange travelers and eyed them up and down quickly.

“Yes, that’s me. Can I help you?” He said with a friendly smile, but his voice held a bit of suspicion on the edge. Honestly, she couldn't blame him for being just a bit suspicious.

Kyouya met Haruhi's questioning look with a small shrug of his own, indicating I don't know, but it seems likely. He hadn't decided if he was happier not being alone just yet as he was still smarting from the awkwardness of being so out of place, but was starting to lean that way. After all, with her here, it was much less likely that he was crazy ...

All right, and if he had to admit it, if he had to be lost in some strange alternate reality, Haruhi would be the friend he'd be most likely to want with him. She was sensible and wouldn't panic or overreact, and she had a plethora of skills that he didn't. He appreciated that.

He approached the professor with one of those calm smiles, and offered a handshake. "Please forgive us for the interruption. I'm Kyouya Ootori, and this is Haruhi Fujioka. Our arrival in Hoenn was ... rather unexpected, and Miss Vera was kind enough to loan us two of your laboratory's Pokémon for our trip to Oldale, on the condition that we informed you that we had them," he explained. "I'm glad we were able to find you."

The Professor studied them both a little more carefully this time, taking in their tousled appearance. "Oho! So you're not from this area at all, and need a little help getting home?" Kyouya supposed they didn't call him the Professor for nothing. Birch went right on talking. "In that case, I want to make sure you know how to work with our Pokémon! Let's have a battle, right now."

"A — battle?" To Kyouya's credit, he managed to conceal most of his uncomfortable surprise at the notion. He glanced at Haruhi, almost as if asking permission (since when did Kyouya ever ask permission for anything?), and then said bluntly, "Pokémon aren't very common in the Bunkyo* region. I'm afraid you'll have to instruct us, as Miss Vera didn't mention anything of the sort."

The professor blinked in some surprise at the idea that there were teenagers unfamiliar with Pokémon, but nodded in acquiescence. "All right, then! Release your Pokémon, and I'll show you." He demonstrated with two Pokéballs of his own, releasing a Torchic and a Mudkip.

Kyouya followed his motion, albeit nowhere near as smoothly. As the Pokéball hissed open, his Abra appeared in front of him, levitating about a foot off the ground. He internally swore to himself that he'd never get used to that.

Haruhi raised her eye at the mention of a battle. It wasn't completely unexpected, seeing as this "game" was all about raising pokemon in different ways. She watched as the two pokeballs opened and out popped a Torchic and Mudkip. She raised her eyebrow again, they were actually pretty cute in her eyes, but she didn't say anything.

She glanced down at the pokeball in her hand and without second thought tossed it into the air. The little brown furball jumped out of the pokeball and landed in front of them. "Vee!" It said as it stretched out and stared at the pokemon in front of her. It obviously knew what it was doing, much more than the two behind her. The pokeball snapped back to her hand and she wondered just how it did that, but put it in the back of her mind for now.

"Alright." The professor said with what seemed to be a nod of approval. "There are a few basics to battling. The first being that each side has the same number of pokemon. We must be fair about this." He said with a smile. "From there, each pokemon has it's own type and therefore its own set of attack and defensive moves. Torchic is a fire type and Mudkip is a water type. While Eevee is a normal type and Abra is a psychic type. This leads to diversity among the pokemon and type advantages and disadvantages. Obviously Mudkip is strong against Torchic due to their typing. However, that doesn't make or break the battle; depending upon the moves used and how skillful you are at choosing the right moves at the right time can turn the tide of battle easily." He said with a laugh, you could see just how passionate he was about this. "Now the pokemon will battle until they will become unable to continue, or 'faint' as we call it. From there, they can be healed using potions or taking them to a pokecenter in a nearby town." He said as he pointed in the direction of Oldale.

Haruhi looked between the four and was starting to make the connections, though it didn't change the fact she didn't know what moves any of them knew. "Professor, I believe I'm following the general guidelines, however I don't know the moves they can learn." She said with a slight puzzled look.

"Ah!" He said with a chuckle, "That is correct. Eevee's basic moves are tackle, growl, bite, and tailwhip. While Abra's are psychic, teleport, reflect, and Psybeam."

Haruhi's eyebrows knit together as this was all confusing. "Thank you." She said as he explained their movesets, but not the two of his pokemon's. Must be trying to test their ability to adapt.

"I will mention one last thing, since this is a double battle, teamwork is important for success. Since I am more interested in what you two can do, please. Make the first move." He said while gesturing his hands towards them.

I'm in a reality where people protect themselves by cockfighting with pet-sized monsters. And the monsters apparently like it, as they don't seem to be protesting. What kind of strange place is this? was the first thought that crossed Kyouya's mind. The second was that obviously there was a challenge in front of him, and he was in no position to decline. An Ootori might choose to decline, but never would choose to lose, unless on purpose. Losing here served no purpose, therefore, winning was the only option.

"Do you mean that each person has the same number of Pokémon in the battle at the same time? Or that each has the same number of Pokémon total?" he inquired. It hadn't quite made sense.

"Oh! That each team has the same number battling at the same time," the Professor explained. "You can carry up to six Pokémon with you, but usually people battle with only one at a time, and bring out another if they want to gain a type advantage, or if the one battling has fainted. Sometimes there are special battles like this, where you might battle with two Pokémon at once to face off against multiple opponents."

Kyouya was never one to learn by doing, preferring book-study before taking on doing something the first time, but that didn't seem to be an option this time. He cupped his chin in one hand. "I see," he said thoughtfully, and began to mull over their options.

He weighed the moves that the Professor had explained to them. Of course, the names meant little to him, and he found himself wondering how on earth tail whip was supposed to be an attack. Maybe the creature whipped the other with its tail, he supposed. He looked over the Eevee, and decided that seemed like an ineffectual idea. He could make an assumption — probably not quite true, but something to go on — that as a normal-type, any of Eevee's attacks would probably be functional against the other two Pokémon.

He wondered what the Abra's attacks would do, though presumably since the creatures were at least semi-intelligent, they would have some sort of effect. As for teleporting, the Abra seemed able to do that without his direction, so he crossed that off the list for the moment. Reflect sounded like it would do more or less what it said — reflect some damage, maybe? Reflect attacks? Maybe it created mirror copies of attacks. Tricky. He didn't like playing with unknowns. That left Psychic and Psybeam. The former might be an attack, or maybe it would be defensive, and tell the Abra what the other Pokémon was about to do. Hmm. But Psybeam definitely sounded like something that did damage. All right, then. Decision made.

"Teamwork, hm? I appreciate the hint." Perhaps there was a bit of calculation laced into that polite thank you. Kyouya murmured softly to Haruhi, "Shall we start with the one on the right?"

The one on the right was the Mudkip, and whether or not it was the actual threat, Kyouya didn't know. But logic dictated that if they took one out quickly, then the other would have to split its attention between their two Pokémon, and he expected that should be more difficult for it. He could experiment with the Abra's less-obvious moves when the threat had been cut down to a manageable size. "Abra, use Psybeam on the Mudkip, please," he directed it, folding his arms as the battle was about to unfold.

Haruhi listened intently as Professor Birch answered more of Kyoya's questions. This definitely had a lot more to it than what was expected and honestly, it was kind of interesting. Since she spent most of her time studying, learning new things piqued her interest instantly; even if it wasn't something she thought she would ever apply to her life.

She mulled over the types of attacks that the Eevee knew. She understood the basics of tackle and bite, but felt like there was something different to growl and tail whip. When a dog growls, it is to intimidate its opponent, so she assumed it held the same effect here as well. While Tail Whip seemed strange, she could see for maybe something else it could be use effectively. She smirked slightly at the possibilities of teamwork. If the Abra could float on its own, maybe it could make something else lift off the ground as well. She wasn't sure, but it could be tested later she supposed.

As Kyoya mentioned attacking the one on the right first, the mudkip, she thought about it a moment. Normal logic dictated taking out one at a time could be useful, but she highly doubted the torchic would just sit quietly. Let alone the fact that if they got in each other's way, it could end poor as well. But that would be the learning curve she suspected. However, that could also mean that the Torchic and Mudkip could hurt each other as well. With all the possibilities, she could feel her mouth turn up in a smirk as it was beginning to get interesting at last.

"Alright...Just let's keep an eye out for a different approach." She muttered. She looked at the Eevee, "Right. Eevee let's go with a tackle attack at the Mudkip." She said feeling just a little foolish. However the Eevee didn't hesitate and began running toward the Mudkip, picking up its speed. 'Fast... She thought as it darted toward the Mudkip, successfully making contact and knocking it back a few feet.

It didn't fall though and quickly regained its posture, poised to strike.

The Abra, on Kyouya's command, had slid one eye open a fraction, seemed to shift itself slightly in mid-air, and a luminescent purple beam gathered at its forehead, and lanced toward the Mudkip.

The blow seemed to stagger it, but again, it did not fall. Kyouya cupped his chin with one hand, and studied the playing field. Strike one for his strategy -- but at least the monster looked battered.

The Professor, however, seemed to appreciate the tactic, even if it hadn't been as effective as Kyouya would have wanted. He laughed heartily, giving the pair of them a thumbs-up, before directing his own Pokémon. "Mudkip, use Mud-Slap. Torchic ..." He looked as if he were debating the right course of action as the Mudkip sprang into action, spraying the Abra and Eevee alike with mud.

Fascinating, the mud seems to come out of nowhere, Kyouya observed, though he still tensed slightly when his monster seemed to take some damage from the attack. Attached to that thing already? he noted to himself irritably. No, I just don't want to lose.

The Professor seemed to have come to a decision, as he suggested with a tense expression of his own, "Torchic, use Ember." The little bird hopped forward, though not without a questioning chirp, and clouded the battlefield with smoking cinders. The Mudkip was caught in the area of effect, and let out a startled cry, looking extremely distressed with the state of affairs, though the Eevee and Abra took the brunt of the blow.

So there are moves that hit even your own team. Duly noted. Kyouya wondered briefly if either of their Pokémon had a move like that. He supposed he'd find out. His Abra hissed softly, still shaking off mud and embers. Well, the initial strategy hadn't gone quite as he expected; perhaps he should take the time to investigate the other moves. "Reflect, please, Abra." It growled an affirmative, and two glowing shields materialized in front of both the Abra and the Eevee. Ah, that looks useful ...

Eevee flinched as the mud covered her face, her eyes sealing shut at the unwelcome mess. "Veee!" It said in distress. Haruhi's mouth opened slightly, her eyes widening a moment, wishing she could help it. She clenched her fists as the Torchic used ember. 'Fire...' She thought as Eevee jumped in the air in surprise as it cinged its ears a bit.

Haruhi wasn't exactly sure what to do, but when the little reflective barriers formed in front of both of them, she had a small sense of relief. This would help a little, but she wondered just what and if there were any specifics to the attacks it would help reflect against. "Nice." She said anyway, thankful for just a little defense. It bought just a few seconds longer for Eevee to at least clean the mud from her eyes and she shook her head, ready for what was next.

Haruhi took a moment to think, she didn't really like the Torchic, fire seemed like more dangerous than the mud, though she wondered if the mud had prevented further damage from the ember due to it coating just a bit of them. But since the fact the Mudkip was pretty damaged, she figured it would be the logical one to attack instead.

"Eevee, bite the mudkip!" She called out as the Eevee jumped a bit and started charging toward the injured mudkip. However, it jumped out of the way at the last minute, causing Eevee to miss and nearly run into a nearby tree. She stopped, jumped back, and ready for retaliation.

"This is a little more difficult than I thought..." She muttered to Kyoya. While the Mudkip took damage from the ember, it didn't seem to do a lot, but that could be because it was a water type.

Professor Birch laughed, "I must say. You two are doing far better than I initially thought you would." He said with a large smile, obviously enjoying himself and watching how adept they were at picking up on things.

Kyouya smiled that tight little smile in return to the Professor's compliment — the one that usually read I like being underestimated. "Approximately as difficult as I thought," he murmured in return to Haruhi. "We are essentially flying blind, after all."

The Professor directed the Mudkip to tackle the Eevee in return, and the Torchic to take a peck at Kyouya's Abra. The Abra was quick, but apparently not so quick that the little bird couldn't land a jab. A rainbow-colored glint that slowed each of the attacks seemed to indicate that the reflective shield the Abra had conjured was doing something. That was good, in Kyouya's estimation, though his Pokémon was visibly starting to look battered. He hoped this would draw to a conclusion quickly.

Huh. I'd have expected him to use Ember again, since it hits everyone. Maybe that Mudkip's pretty worn down and he isn't willing to sacrifice it. It was a plausible explanation, he supposed. Or maybe he's just playing with us, wanting to see what we'll do.

Well, Kyouya had tried Psybeam and Reflect. That left — "Abra, use Psychic, please." He had no idea what it would do, having pegged it as potentially an assistance move, so it was to his surprise that the intense purple aura that gathered around his Pokémon lashed out in a brilliant flare, engulfing the area. Kyouya nudged his glasses back into place, a cover for blinking furiously once or twice to clear his vision and see what had happened.

Haruhi's eyes widened as the move psychic engulfed the area. Everything held a slight purple aura that amazed her. She hadn't even realized her mouth was hanging open till she realized her mouth had gone a little dry. She took a glance at Kyoya, wondering if this surprised him just as much, but turned her attention back to the two pokemon.

Since she didn't know exactly what had happened, she decided to show a little caution. "Eevee. Tackle the Mudkip." She said as Eevee began to move, she noted how it seemed to skit across the ground; as though the psychic move had helped Eevee attain a higher speed. She couldn't help but smirk at the good fortune as Eevee hit the Mudkip dead on. It seemed as though the psychic was also helping to slow the Mudkip from dodging. The Mudkip fell backward from the blow, landing on it's stomach and not getting back up.

"Ah. You fainted my Mudkip." Professor Birch said with a smile. "Very well, Torchic use peck on the Eevee right in front of you!" The Torchic though slowed by the move seemed to leap in the air just fine. Eevee braced itself as the Torchic came flying at her, but then the purple aura surrounding Eevee glowed brighter and she was lifted into the air. Haruhi's eyes widened as the Torchic missed, hitting the ground instead.

Eevee's paws seemed to flail at the ground, momentarily unsure of how she was floating. But then quickly turned to the Abra and yipped gleefully. "A thank you no less." Haruhi said as she smiled as she looked at Kyoya. "We've almost won. I'm starting to think we can pull this off."

"I'm thinking you're right," Kyouya murmured in response, though his attention at this point had focused squarely on the battle. "Keep it up, Abra," he directed. This particular move seemed very useful, and he'd always been a big fan of flexibility. There was a swift nod of the Abra's head, as it scanned the battlefield with slitted eyes, and it growled a soft "a-bra" in the direction of the Eevee, as if to say, I'll hold, you punch.. The bright psychic glow appeared again, though Kyouya was expecting it this time. It coiled around both of the other Pokémon, seeming to drag the Torchic down and secure it in place, while nudging the Eevee forward.

The Professor chuckled. "Well, it seems like you've got the hang of that move, at least." Kyouya allowed himself a bit of a smirk as he folded his arms. "I try to be a fast learner." But he turned to Haruhi, to allow her and her Eevee to do the honors of finishing off the Torchic.

As the Abra's power flowed out, she could almost see its direction as Eevee and the Torchic were engulfed in that fuzzy purple outline. It was so interesting, she had to shake her head to bring her thoughts back to the battle.

"Right, Eevee use Bite." She said as Eevee yipped and started to propel towards the Torchic. It really did seem to move a lot faster due to the loss of gravity, though how she got used to that, Haruhi would never understand.

The professor thought a moment, "Torchic. Ember." The Torchic while pinned still opened it's mouth and shot out a few embers towards the two. Eevee braced itself, but then it was propelled higher into the air, the embers missing it completely. The Eevee didn't hesitate and continued towards the Torchic, hoping that Abra didn't get hit much by the fiery embers. Eevee bit into the Torchic, the Torchic giving a small cry before it fainted.

As the purple psychic disappeared, Professor Birch began clapping, "Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful." He had a large smile on his face, almost proud of how quickly the two had learned and adapted. Eevee ran back and leapt into Haruhi's arms, she giving a small "Whoa" in the process.

Haruhi turned and looked at Kyoya, "We...did it." She said, almost in disbelief. It was strange, but she smiled, "It was kind of fun." She shook her head, not really understanding why, but petted the fox-like Eevee in her arms.

Professor Birch stepped closer to the two, "For not being familiar with pokemon or the mechanics of battling, I'll say you two did splendid. I have no problem letting you two use those pokemon while you discover your way home." He said with a small nod of approval, "You may find out, they have other surprises in store for you.
