THE RULES

The most important Rule is please do not use contractions o words like:

We are going to be serious because there is people on gaia who use the lenguage and this is a good oportunity that you know what we are saying.
And remember, English is not the official lenguage on Gaia, so be tolerant and pantient.

At the end of the curse you will have 1000 points if you:

Precense 100 points
Participation 100 points
Homework 400 points
Special Works 100 points
Exams 300 points

Origins of the Spanish Language

The base of the Spanish language is the ordinary Latin propagated in Spain since the end of the III century a.D., imposed to the Iberian languages and the Basque.

The spanish have greek elements, because the Mediterranean coast had an important Greek colonization in the VII century a.D. and during the Renaissance the Greek was used for produce new terms.

Between the centuries III and VI came the German language for give some touches to the Spanish across the Latin touched by the barbarian people in Rome between the centuries III and V.

In Castile (Spain) existed a Basque territory between Cantabria and the north of Leon where the Castiles took arabian territories but anyway they used the castilian language for speak.

Castilian or Spanish?

This Language is also called Castilian, because is the name of the community of the language what spoken this roman modality on the medieval times: Castilian.

There is a polemic around the denomination of the language; the term Spanish is relatively recently and have no admitance for the most of the people who speak two of more languages, because they think that the Spanish just includes Valencian, Gallego and Basque, languages with official consideration inside each territory.
The same people proposed get back to the denomination more antique that had the Spanish language, castilean known as "Castilian Language".

In the Hispano-American countries the Spanish conserves this denomination and they have no dificulties when they have to understand as synonymous the terms castilian and Spanish.
In the first documents after the fundation of the Real Academy of the Spanish, their members decided by agreement use the denomination of Spanish Language.

By the number of people what speaks Spanish this Language occupies the third place in the world.

LATIN AND LATINO

Latin the Language

The Latin is the Language original from the Italic region, it won a great importance because its the official language of the Roman Empire. The Latin gave origin to a several of european languages, called romance languages, like the castilean (spanish), the French, the Italian and the Rumanian.

During some centuries after the fall of the Roman Empire, the latin continued being useful across Europe as a cultured language.
At the moment is the official language in the Vatican.

In the present time is still used for studies about the human kind, linguistics,
jurisprudence (laws), historicals, the religion, the literature.

Latino

Originaly, the word latino was used for call to the people who lived in the Lacio, they conquered Rome (Etruscan territory) in the year 509 a.D. It was their language.

Later, it was used to call to the antique roman citizens who came from the latin people.

Actually the word Latino has different uses:

1. For make mention of the territory where the people speak a language deribated from the Latin (Romance Languages): Spaniards, Frenchs, Italians, Portuguese, Rumanians, and all those countries founded by these kingdoms during the Colonization

2. The norteamerican people use this word to call the people from South America, Central America and Mexico.
Depending of the context this term has xenophobic connotations, but in a general way is accepted and usual.
All the countries, from Mexico to South America were conquered and colonized for the Spaniard Empire or the Portuguese, and how this kingdoms has latin origins, they are called latinoamericanos.

Why Do you Want to Join: I would like to learn a second language, even if it is just the basics, I still have an interest. I have a friend who speaks spanish, and she did her best to teach me the basic words in Spanish, however it is hard to learn over the internet due to lack of being able to pronounce a lot of the words. I hope to further my knowledge in this class.

Why Should you be accepted? Why would anyone not be accepted? In my opinion there is only one way you are going to teach a student, if the student is willing to learn. I am willing to learn to my greatest ability and wish to learn.

Which class do you want to take part in: Spanish
Why would you like to join that Class: I would like to join because I am black and Puerto Rican, yet I don't know very much spanish at all. My father never taught me growing up and I think it's very important to know the language of my culture. Plus, I'd like to be able to talk to my abuela without her having to struggle with English.
How often are you online in Gaia: I am on gaia a few hours everyday.
How long will you take part in the class: Until I feel satisfied with my understanding of the language as far as the internet can provide.
