This discussion started in the guild's Chatterbox, and I am moving it here so it can be discussed at length and in depth.

We all know, that Gaia has a PG-13 rating limit. And yet there has always been question as to what is and isnt PG-13, the line blurred further by Gaia it's self, with its creators releasing content that promote Sex(sexy items), Violence(weapons for avatars, items involving blood, games involving slaying of monsters), Drugs/Alcohol/Tobacco(Avatar Items) Gambling(The casino games like slots), and criminal acts (street/rally car racing)(dumpsterdiving).

And yet, Gaia has set a precedent in the past for unfairly shutting down threads and guilds with Yuri content for violation of the TOS. Either because the actions of one or two people in that group (A yuri guild) or because of some imagined violation (The Yuri Pussycat Directory) -- Making a already small Yuri community dwindle, unsure what PG-13 is, and why shoujo-ai content seems to be marked as above that rating limit, but het and yaoi seems to be okay.

The discrimination isn't just rampant here on Gaia either. It exists in almost all forms of media. Movies getting a higher rating because it has lesbians in it. Video games coming under fire because the ability to have same-sex relations, T.V shows pushed to a later hour either because of main text lesbians or subtext.

Why? What is it about two female characters who are clearly in love, sharing a short, sweet kiss, that calls for a R rating?

Discuss!

I think you're confused about PG-13. Most of those things are legitimate in PG-13. In fact, most of those things make something that would otherwise be PG into PG-13.

Although the rules are fuzzy, implied sex is fine for PG-13. It is explicit sex that is not kosher. I had a very serious, protracted fight with a former Gaia moderator about that. She was insisting that "fading to black" then returning sweaty and naked in bed together was not allowed on Gaia because it was - and I quote - "explicit sex". I b***h slapped the snooty snatch up and down for being too stupid to look up the word "explicit" in the dictionary.

Violence, blood and weapons are all fine for PG-13. Live free or die hard, the fourth Die Hard movie was PG-13 for ******** sake. It is extreme graphic violence that is not okay.

Drugs, alcohol and tobacco are all fine for PG-13. It is only very graphic use of really hard drugs (like cocaine) that is not okay.

Gambling is just fine for PG-13. Gambling is even okay in G. Making a big deal of gambling might cross the line into PG, but still.

Criminal acts are also fine for PG-13.

In all cases, the only thing that would make you cross the line would be if you made any of these things too extreme, or put too much focus on them. Sex is fine, but graphic or explicit sex - or too much focus on sex - is not. Violence is fine, but extremely graphic and gory violence - especially if it's gratuitous - is not. Drugs are fine, but too much hard drugs or going into too much detail or glorifying drugs too much is not.

PG-13 is not for kids' movies dude. It's for stuff that's certainly not a kids' movie but isn't quite bad enough to be adults only. That's the whole point of it.

What bothers me about it is the fact that when women kiss on television, in books, etc. it's usually for the experimentation and sexual tension of that moment. Rarely do we see that some women can progress from that heavy make-out session at the bar to coffee the next day, to a few dates a week, to being girlfriends, living together, getting married, and living life quite happily.

Most "on screen" kisses are temporary and fleeting, offering a portrayal of women who can experiment a little but will always return to their men. On the other hand, when lesbian couples are portrayed it's usually with the butch and the femme and their screen time is also very temporary.

The main message to me?: Lesbianism is fleeting and sexy and for the man's benefit.

Since it's for the man's benefit, it's an arousal thing which makes it R.

However... My thread seems to get away with a lot despite Gaia's PG13 rating. I think it's because there are enough posts in it that mods are too lazy to look for the fleeting moments that often make my eyes bug out and worry about it. ninja

I have to agree with Coley AND Revan on this.

The problem is multifaceted: even though we've progressed, our society is still controlled by the powerful.

Who are the powerful? Usually white men with lots of money and privilege and who are typically over the age of forty.

What does it result in? Our society still being rather patriarchal, which then trickles down into other things: the fact that a "beautiful woman" is considered to be this fair skinned, long blond haired, blue eyed European stick figure (I am NONE of the things above, so you can see where someone like me gets very upset in seeing this image as being the sole standard of beauty. It'd ridiculous: less then ten percent of people even look like that.)

The fact that a woman is seen as a sex object is another problem. Once we start crossing this aspect with racism (ie. in old days blacks were not even seen as human or having a soul), you start to see where other discourses of thoughts in our society come from: for example take how black woman are typically portrayed as being exotic or mischivious, and if the protagonist (usually a white male) happens to have two women vying for his attention and one of them is a part of a visible minority? He will typically end up with the white woman rather than the minority -- especially if she is portrayed with horrible camp stereotypes.

Finally we have the whole female sexual desire -- it is never discussed. Women's sexual desire as a topic is always ignored because it is often seen as unimportant to that of men's. What you end up getting is this skewered view that a woman's desire should be to fufill her man's... which leads back to the old age thought of women being property and belonging in the kitchen and all of that fun, fun stuff...

Heterosexism is just another facet on this. It's seen as the "natural and superior" way. Add that to the fact that we are seen as objects rather than people and suddenly its like a puppet effect: it's perfectly fine to experiment if its for the master's entertainment, but if that is what you prefer, well... we just can't have you around. It looks bad on the image we're trying to project...

Coley, darling.... I feel bad for this, allow me to break this down gently...

Ray-Lynn with Camilla
Karelineo with Sonia
Relena with Jules
Taz with Domi... TWICE.
Recently: Leonora with Freya (I guess we're both guilty for that couple)
and... did I forget to mention Relena and Jules? We tend to skirt on those two a lot. razz Though we know the audience enjoys it -- dirty birds -- hah!

... I'm sure that explains it. My characters, for whatever reason, get a lot of action in that department. Except Athene because she's a b***h, Malwyn, because Mia is never around to play Terresha for her anymore and Melodique because... well, it's Mel. Her personal history makes her reluctant for such endeavors...though I'm sure she has a lot of wet dreams, hahahhahahah!

I'm guessing it probably has something to do with the censorship policies in the US. There's an excellent documentary about the movie film rating system, highlighting the differences between Canada and the US, called "This Film is Not Yet Rated". Ironically, it has an R rating, or 18A, I believe. Something strict.

What it talks about is what warrants a PG-13, 14A, 18A, or R rating. In the US, anything to do with sexuality, especially nudity, is given at least an 18A rating. Even scenes between a loving, non-traditional heterosexual couple will get a higher rating. In Canada, however, it is the opposite. Canada rates sexuality lower, but violence and then bloody violence higher.

Its just idle musing, but perhaps that's why Gaia inconsistently cracks down on Gays and Lesbians?

I am too used to facebook, but I wanted to like this post.

But I agree. And its a serious problem in acceptance for they gay community: lesbians are okay because they are hot, but gay men aren't because they threaten masculinity.
