The 'Verse

Welcome to The 'Verse, a Firefly RP set concurrently with the TV series by Joss Whedon. This game will be following the antics of a Firefly-class transport ship and her crew trying to make their way in the 'verse.

In The 'Verse times are tough for most, particularly those out on the Border Planets without power and money. A long time ago humanity used up the resources of Earth-That-Was and polluted the planet past being habitable. The exodus led to the colonization of a new solar system and eventually the central planets decided that all of the planets should be under one government. There were those that disagreed and war broke out between the two factions known as the Alliance and the Independents, or more commonly the Browncoats. Six years ago the Unification War ended, bringing the Border Planets into the Alliance and bringing peace. Or, at least, that was the theory. Bandits and despots are common on the Border Planets as are hunger and sickness. And Reavers are a constant problem for those on the Border.

Largely, I feel that these shouldn't be needed. They're the same across most of Gaia and within the guild. But here they are in case - for some godforsaken reason - you need a reminder. This is rather a lot like those safety lectures on airplanes.

1. No godmodding.
2. No cybering.
3. I need confirmation from both parties before you kill another player's character so I know both parties gave their consent.
4. I am the DM/GM/Storyteller/whatever you want to call it. This means as the RP goes, I am an all powerful being. Do not tempt me to say "Rocks fall, everyone dies." In case of emergency and I can't be contacted, ask Deirdre.
5. Profiles are PMed to me. I review them. When I okay yours, you can post.

Information

Factions
Reavers - To many these creatures are fairy tales, horror stories told to children to make them behave. They say that these nightmares are people who looked out into the Black and were driven mad by the emptiness there. Either way, they are bad news. Reaver ships arrive on planets or attack ships near the Border. They will rape, kill, eat, skin and wear the skins of those they encounter. And if those poor souls are lucky it will be in that order.

The Alliance - The government of the Allied planets and the victor in the Unification War. They are based in the Core Worlds and have marginal power out on the Border. Their body armor has a purple tint to the chest armor, which has led to the moniker of "Purple Belly."

The Independents - Now a defunct faction despite the sentiments of parts of the population. During the Unification War they fought to stay separate from the Alliance and lost. They are commonly called Browncoats due to the color of the coats members of their faction chose as their uniform.

Important Places
Serenity Valley - The location and name of the battle that was the turning point in the Unification War. The battle was hard fought and eventually the Alliance came out as victors after a cease fire was declared.

The Border - Made up of the Border Planets, the Border is where the Alliance's power is stretched the thinnest. More often than not it resembles the Old Wild West of history. Those keeping the law are usually a man with a silver star trying his best or are those corrupt men who are writing the law as they please.

The Core - Made up of the Core Planets, the Core is fairly heavily populated with a tendency to have lots of technology and money although poverty is known in the Core. In the Core you can count on being more likely to live than not in a hospital. Several of the Core planets also have a very stratified class system with unwritten rules of conduct similar to the European nobility of history.

Profiles Profiles, Old Crew

Captain
Name and any aliases: Jaswinder Sturm. Nicknamed Jas and formerly Lieutenant Jaswinder Sturm of the 39th Rescue Squadron
Age: 34
Role on the ship: Captain
Physical Description: Jas is strikingly pale from her cream-colored skin to her almost-white blonde hair. Even her pale blue eyes are light enough that the irises seem to be just barely there in bright light. Not that Jas is ever in bright light. She gets sunburns in pouring rain. Her coloration, her high, sharp cheekbones and prominent nose points toward probable Nordic ancestry from Earth that Was. Tall, whipcord thin and built like a brick house, Jas is the very image of a valkyrie and has been called such in the past.

Because of her tendency to burn, Jas is forced to cover up completely no matter what the temperature is. Off ship Jas prefers a black - long since faded into a blueish navy - leather duster with the high collar turned up and a broad-brimmed leather hat. Normally, however, she sticks to a plain grey collared shirt, matching pants held up with a pair of suspenders and a pair of worn tanker boots. Jas' pistols live tucked under her arms in a shoulder harness and a very large knife lives strapped to a drop-leg sheath and her belt.
History: Jas was born on Colchester to a relatively wealthy family. Her father was a politician and her mother was a socalite. Both of them had ambition that led to them moving an 8 year old Jas and her younger siblings to Londinium. Unlike her younger siblings, who were twins, Jas never quite fit in with High Society and did her best to find excuses to not end up at the parties stuffed into a dress. More than a few times she scandalized her family by showing up to costume balls (One of the rare kinds of parties she would show up to without much coercing) in pants.

Then, once she was in her majority, she went and accepted a commission in the Alliance military. And it was quite literally the minute she was old enough to legally make her own decisions. Several hours previous, Jas had walked into her father's study and made her announcement, which led to the inevitable arguments and her father - now a prominent politician - forbidding her from leaving. In the end, Jas walked to the training depot and joined the military. She did a short stint as a Foxbat pilot before getting shuffled to a gunship squadron then finally a medical transport squadron shortly before the Unification War began. During the war she built a reputation as a solid pilot and definitely one of the ones you want picking you up off the battlefield if not for her looks but also because you'd be almost guaranteed not to get shot down. Despite her reputation, Jas found herself holding a dishonorable discharge after the dust settled at Serenity Valley and a warning to get lost.

And that's precisely what she did. Alliance records show her leaving on a civilian transport for Shinon and arriving, but once she was there Jas disappeared for a year before popping back up on the map as the captain of a Firefly-class transport ship. She did a few jobs for the Alliance as a cargo ship before picking up more crew and expanding her range all the way out to the Border Planets. As far as the Core Worlds are concerned, Jas is a law-abiding captain. Out toward the Border planets, however, more than a few captains of Alliance patrol ships aren't so convinced.

First Mate/Companion
Name and any aliases: Midorikawa Aria
Age: 31
Role on the ship: First Mate, Ambassador, Mother Hen
Physical Description: As a child, Aria was chubby, and has since grown to be a curvaceous adult. Her raven-colored hair is long and naturally stick straight. On the ship it is usually in a simple braid or bun, however when she has an appointment it will be up in an elaborate style. Aria has smooth olive skin and large grey eyes.

Her upbringing leads Aria to surround herself with things of beauty. Her clothing is all tailored to her, tall boots and pants and a variety of shirts in colors that appeal to her that day. She does not wear makeup other than when she works. When working, Aria’s selection of kimono depends how recently she has been to the Okiya. Most of her kimono are stored there, but she keeps a small number on-ship with her.

She has been known to use her body for art, but Aria has never gotten a tattoo. She does have a a few scars she has picked up while serving with Jas. One in the hollow of her shoulder from a bullet, another across the small of her back and leading down toward her left cheek. Though it gives her mother fuel for why she should not choose this sort of life, Aria looks at them as a conversation piece

Weapons/Muscle
Name and any aliases: Jaden Jun Chu
Age: 28
Role on the ship: Hits things. Sometimes shoots them. Sometimes sets them on fire or blows them into bitty-bitty pieces.
Physical Description: The first thought that tends to go through people's minds upon seeing Jaden is something along the lines of "Is that male or female?" Jaden stands at 5'8" without the six inch mohawk and has an androgynously slim build. Most of Jaden's approximately 160 pounds is lean muscle built more for strength than bulk. Of almost ethnically pure Chinese descent, Jaden's skin is naturally the pale tawny color of sun-bleached and long-dead grass. Jaden also comes by hir thick and straight jet black hair and almond-shaped brown eyes honestly.

As for what ze wasn't born with, Jaden's body shows the evidence of having lived a life full of violence with fading puckered scars and more than a few newer ones. The evidence of a bullet here, cuts here and there, burn scars and bite marks. Jaden is also covered in tattoos, most of which most people don't get to see as they're under hir clothing. However, Jaden's visible tattoos include a small rainbow triangle tucked just behind hir inside right wrist just below the wrist bones, a small blue and purple butterfly on the web of hir left hand, the word TEMPEST across the back of hir right hand, the word Storm across the back of hir left, part of the Heart Sutra in Chinese on the inside of hir left forearm (Form is no different from emptiness/Emptiness is no different from form/That which is form is emptiness/That which is emptiness is form) and a half-sleeve on hir right arm bearing a blue Imperial Dragon fighting a red phoenix, a spiked skull, a gas mask and a scroll bearing the words "The only easy day was yesterday". Then there's Jaden's piercings, the rings for which are all too small for fingers to slip into. Ze has one ring in hir right nostril, a tongue stud, one ring in hir left eyebrow, two rings in a spiderbite on the left side of hir mouth, mirrored studs in hir lower and upper lips and eight piercings in hir ears.

When it comes to clothing, Jaden wears a very old style of clothing that dates back to Earth that Was. The style is known as Rivethead and largely involves black, camouflage, steel and chrome. In Jaden's case - when not wearing a full on set of camouflage to sneak around in - ze prefers to wear big black tanker boots, a military surplus utility jacket, welding goggles for sunglasses and either a black shirt or black tank top. And aside from Jaden's piercings, the only jewelry ze wears is on of hir brother's dog tags on a ball-chain necklace and a long string of 14mm beads wrapped around hir wrist and secured with a monkey's fist knot and a loop.

By the way, that bulge in hir pants? You're welcome to try to find out whether Jaden was born with it, but if you stare or ask wrong you might just end up bloody on the floor.
History: Jaden comes from a very large family. A very very large family. Ze refers to them as the clan and there's enough people in the family to have at least a small grouping of them on every planet humanity has settled on. There were Chus on Miranda. There were Chus on Shadow. There are Chus on Ariel. At last count there were at least five million Chus claiming a part in Jaden's clan. However, Chus don't tend to work on ships that sail from place to place. There are a few, but those are typically the ones that are in the military.

One of those was Jaden's brother. He joined up with the Alliance military prior to the start of the Unification War and his career was ended at Serenity Valley. By the time he returned from the war, things between Jaden and their parents were already rather strained. So strained that Jaden was pretty much living in one of their uncles' storage spaces and working for him. He sold guns, both the legal kind and the rather very illegal kind. During the day Jaden worked in his shop, learning a gunsmith's trade and at night Jaden occasionally got to practice with the guns ze got to fix all day.

Forever loyal to hir brother, Jaden began spending time with him as he grew used to the prosthetic legs he had been given by the Alliance and listened to his stories about the war. A few months later things came to a breaking point between Jaden and hir parents and Jaden was on the next ship to...anywhere. It didn't matter where.

Since then, Jaden's been picking up skills, guns and a bit of a reputation. Things have a tendency to go boom and people - that are not Jaden's crew - tend to get shot when Jaden's around. Jaden's been with this crew for a couple of years now and it doesn't look like ze's going to be leaving any time soon

Medic
Name and any aliases: Fayra Gardiner
Age: 26
Role on the ship: Medic
Physical Description: Pic Of average height (5'4"?) and hourglass figure, Fayra has perfect posture and appearance to make her stand out in a crowd. Very fair skinned, she burns rather than tans in the sun and wears protection accordingly. Her brown hair tends to curl naturally and is worn up and out of the way most of the time she is out of her personal quarters. Her green eyes are normally hidden behind glasses which she apparently needs for reading. On her right upper arm, Fayra has a tattoo of an ornate number 27.

Fayra has a seemingly limitless supply of white button-ups (untucked) and lab coats, wearing almost exclusively the first and more often than not the latter. She prefers slacks in dark colors but has also been seen in denim before. There is always a white tank beneath the blouse, as she will simply discard the blouse if it becomes unclean.

Pilot

Mechanic
Name and any aliases: Jin-Li Wu
Age: Early 20s. Probably.
Role on the ship: Mechanic.
Physical Description: Jin-Li is a tiny 4'11" and maybe weighs 80lbs soaking wet. At best she can be described as a sort of wiry, scrawny, pale figure who seems to be perpetually covered in grease, dust and dirt. Her arms and hands bear scars from barking her knuckles against metal housings and cuts from sharp bits of metal, but aside from that she bears no distinguishing marks. Usually her brown-black hair is cropped into a messy mop on her head and ignored until it starts getting into her eyes. At that point she usually takes a knife to it to trim it. When she wears shoes, Jin-Li favors an old battered pair of combat boots, but most of the time she runs around barefoot in a stained mechanic's grey-blue coverall with the legs torn short so they fall to mid-calf and the sleeves rolled up to her elbows.

Captain Jas Sturm

████████████████████████████████ █████

"Liou coe shway duh biao-tze huh hoe-tze duh ur-tze. Do you not know how to load cargo?" The tall captain shouted at the four men moving crates of melons into her ship's cargo hold.

Snatching the broad-brimmed hat off her head as she stormed deeper into the cargo hold, she began gesturing with it. Several times she came rather close to hitting them with it in her frustration.

"Each of the gorram crates is marked with a weight and you load my gorram ship so it's distributed evenly. How ruttin' hard is that?" Jas said as she hit one man in the shoulder with her hat. "No, no. That crate goes on that side. No! Over there, you gorram idiot."

The man moved the crate over to where she was gesturing and shoved it off the dolly, making it fall to the ground with a heavy thump. For a moment it looked like Jas was going to yell at them again before she bit out a curse and shoved the hat back on her head.

"Just get the gorram melons out of the sun and onto my gorram ship." Jas bit out and stalked back outside to watch for visitors, her long coat swirling around her calves.

When they had landed almost a week before she had put up a help wanted ad, looking for a medic, a new mechanic and possibly a pilot. At the same time, Jas had put up an ad looking for passengers who wanted cheap transportation to their next location. As of yet, no one had answered, which was only a problem because they had lost their last mechanic at the last planet and were supposed to leave later that day.

Fayra Gardiner

Had it not been for a quiet approach and absolute stillness, surely Jas would have noticed the woman standing at the base of the ramp that melons were being trundled up long before she turned around. At it was, when the turned away from watching her cargo being unloaded, there she was. Fayra was an oddity in the dock, wearing a wide-brimmed hat made of white straw perched on softly curling hair. Her glasses were spotlessly clean, her long, blue jacket pressed, and her white blouse had a crisp collar. She had with her three bags, holding the smallest of them in both hands in front of herself.

Behind her glasses, glass-marble eyes watched Jas and a sort of smile flicked to her lips when it was clear the captain had noticed her.

"She's a nice vessel... Is this the ship that posted it was looking for a medic?" Her voice was crisp, but it could be melodic perhaps if she tried.

There was something odd about the way she stood, back absolutely straight and shoulders tense. Jas would know -some- of her stance could be due to lessons in bearing, but that wasn't entirely it.

Captain Jas Sturm

████████████████████████████████ █████

In a motion born of long habit, Jas reached behind her back and twitched her long white-blonde braid over her shoulder mere moments before one of the passing men would have accidentally got it snagged on the corner of a crate. As she turned to berate him something caught her eye and she paused. There in the hustle and bustle of the busy port was something that was standing perfectly still. It hadn't been there a moment ago and it took a moment for Jas to recover and identify what had caught her eye.

"Ma'am." the captain nodded as a greeting, tipping her hat to the woman and moving across the ramp to stand closer to rather dignified looking woman. Pale blue eyes watched the woman steadily, moving from the woman to her gear and then watching the woman's body language. "Wouldn't call her nice, but she'll get you where you want to go without too much fuss. We do a lot of work out toward the border where function's a bit more important than form. Conditions out that way are rougher on both ships and the folk that fly on 'em. If that ain't a bother to you, we are indeed lookin' for a doctor."

There was something...familiar about the way the woman held herself. Jas stood straight because of her training, but this woman...This woman's bearing reminded her more of those hated comportment lessons and the young women of her youth. But in a different way. There was something that this woman had that those pretty young butterflies would never have.

Fayra Gardiner

Fayra considered Jas carefully, as though she could actually weigh the truth in her words. She hadn't expected a female captain, but it wasn't something that bothered her personally. Actually she preferred it, even if she hadn't thought about it before.

Just as she was about to respond, she moved quite abruptly, stepping to the side of one of the men hauling a crate into the ship. She gave him a wider berth than was necessary, knuckles whitening on the handle fo the case in her hands.

"I do not require luxury. What are your terms?" She looked into the ship from her new angle, still keeping her position just short of actually standing on the ramp leading up into the ship.

Jaden Chu

Jaden ducked a roundhouse punch and barreled into hir attacker's solar plexus with hir shoulder. Some of the fight went out of the man along with all the air in his lungs. What little breath he managed to gasp was lost a moment later when Jaden slammed him into a crate and bounced off. The burly man tried to get an elbow in while gasping for breath, but as a parting shot, Jaden took a fistful of certain important bits and squeezed. Hard.Hir opponent let out a high pitched cry of pain as Jaden worked hirself free just in time to take a mis-aimed blow to hir ribs. Jaden grunted and danced away from hir remaining three attackers. Two of them had heavy pipes in hand as improvised clubs and the third was trying to find space in the cramped back alley to swing his chain without hitting his friends.

"I'm serious! I didn't hit on with your sister. I swear I was just buying supplies." Jaden said as ze retrieved the sack ze had been carrying while warily watching the trio.

"What? So she's not pretty enough?" One of them growled, stepping forward.

"Oh, for--" Jaden sighed as he took a swing at hir.

Taking a step back to avoid the pipe, Jaden automatically reached for the pistol holstered on hir thigh before remembering that killing people here was a quick way to getting into trouble with the captain. And probably Aria. The tattooed and pierced figure let hir hand fall away from the weapon and backed up another couple of steps before faking a charge at hir attacker's left. He took a swing at where he thought that Jaden would be, only to find that his target had juked to his right. Behind him, the man with the chain tried to move to block Jaden by flicking his chain at hir face only to find that his target had dropped to the ground to slide between him and his third brother.

The trio whirled, but Jaden was already on hir feet and out of the alley at a dead run through the crowded street. It was fairly easy to keep Jaden's mohawk in sight and they managed to follow their target through the street market and out to the docks, even if they did manage to lose quite a bit of distance. Distance that they made up once the space opened up.

Vaulting the row of crates to be loaded, Jaden charged up the short stretch to hir ship and quite nearly ran into Fayra. At the last second, Jaden twisted, flashed a grin at the woman and continued up the ramp. A few minutes later ze reappeared with a pair of batons in hand just as the trio of men who had been chasing hir came to a crashing halt at the foot of the loading ramp. They took one look at the maniacally happy grin and the way Jaden was holding the batons before taking a hesitant step backward. That step backward quickly turned into several then a dead run as Jaden steadily walked toward them until ze hit the edge of the loading ramp.

"Cowards!" Ze called after them before turning to Jas and Fayra with a grin. "Hey cap, I found us a spare compression coil on the cheap."

Fayra Gardiner

As Jaden nearly ran her down, Fayra flashed her a startled, nearly terrified look. There was something just at the edge of her wide eyes that wasn't merely surprised to find the taller woman skirting around her. By the time the three chasing her had gotten to the edge of the ramp, Fayra had placed herself on the other side of the taller stack of crates still waiting to be loaded, gripping her bag tightly. She hadn't meant to walk up those few steps into Jas' ship without permission.

One slow, steady breath and she managed to force her breathing into a semblance of normalcy as she watched Jaden walk back up the pathway, grinning. Whatever it was Jaden thought she had seen before it was gone. Fayra's expression was serene. Her green eyes flicked over her taller form, pausing on the batons in her hands and mohawk the longest.

She then turned her attention back to Jas. "I think it safe to assume that is not your Engineer?" On the surface she could have been taken perfectly serious in her tone. But beneath that surface was the implication that Jaden might not be very bright. Or... good with machines. Or... sane.

Captain Jas Sturm

████████████████████████████████ █████

"My terms? Patch my crew up and learn to live with us." Jas shrugged eloquently, ignoring Jaden as ze ran past, narrowly avoiding running Fayra over.

At Fayra's expression, Jas turned and stepped between the woman and Jaden's pursuers automatically. The tall blonde woman eyed the three men and sighed. Before she even got a chance to ask why the men were chasing a member of her crew Jaden reappeared and they abruptly turned tail. Jas really couldn't blame them. Cornered in an alley without a weapon in hand, Jaden looked like a relatively safe target for harassment. Put a weapon in Jaden's hands or make hir angry? Jas would have contemplated running too. Particularly with the way that Jaden was currently grinning and something about the way that the sun was currently glinting off of hir piercings gave hir a more dangerous air than usual.

Jas let out a bark of laughter at Fayra's question. "No, that's Jaden. Ze's our...well...Jaden's Jaden. Sometimes out there, you just need one to watch your back. Don't worry, ze's not--Actually, nevermind."

Fayra Gardiner

The neutral pronoun wasn't lost on Fayra, who regarded Jaden again. This time her eyes trained onto hir face. She didn't look quite as positive that there would be a time she would need a Jaden to watch her back. With the potential threat of the three thugs gone, she dragged her attention back to the real matter at hand. The ship in front of her and the captain she was talking to.

"My terms are this: I require my own space and I wish to inspect your supplies in the medical bay before we leave planetside." She sounded thoroughly business-like as she spoke, but let a smile come to her lips. "You can have the best doctor this side of Londinium but without supplies no one can help you."

"Sounds good enough to me." Jas nodded. "We got space in crew quarters. Hell, if you're the only crew we pick up on this planet, you can have two rooms if you want."

Turning swiftly enough that her braid fell back down her back, Jas gestured for Jaden to join them.

"Jaden. This lady's gunna be our doc for the near future. Give her a tour and take her to the infirmary so she can make a list of what we need." The ship's captain said with a jerk of her head before addressing Fayra again. "We don't have much past the basics so you're going to have to give Jaden a list of what you want. While Jaden's off fetching we can discuss the finer details of our arrangement, Doctor..."
