Sarubachi laughed while rubbing the back of his head at Tazuya's comment. "Yeah, I guess you can say that. Man, nothing gets past you, does it?" Tazuya was still confused at how Sarubachi knew so much about this place. He knew that he had a computer, but never suspected him to have gone this far into the virtual world. Suddenly, Tazuya was completely healed of all damage on him. "What the...?" Tazuya was completely confused on this turn of events. "I wasnt kidding about being a master magician in this world. I am quite tough, you know." Sarubachi said as he laughed outragously.

Jake entered the tube. As he felt himself disappearing, he found himself thinking "Don't you see, world? I didn't have to die to escape you."

He hit solid ground roughly. He was in the cyberspace. It was nighttime, and he was on a hillside. He could see a city up ahead. This world was unlike anything he had imagined it would be. He could feel the subconciousness of all the others who had entered the space with him, scrolling through each of them like chatrooms. His body felt different as well. He had a kind of strength about him, as if his movements were being supported by some type of passive energy.

These realizations were interupted by the attack of some kind of monster. It looked like a four-legged centaur, about 7 feet tall, with a humanoid body and skin that looked like it was covered in scabs. It was carrying a battleaxe.

Jake was not at all expecting this and was certainly not primed for combat with this creature. He found himself thinking "Please let me have some kind of weapon."

The monster jumped toward Jake, about to slice him in half, when suddenly it was repelled backwards by some kind of force field. Jake suddenly realized that he had psychokinesis. He concentrated his energy into a giant lance that appeared out of the palm of his hand, which grew at the speed of light, impaling the four-legged beast in the heart.

As the energy beam retracted, a great fatigue fell over Jake, and he felt the world spinning as he hit the ground. His last thought before falling unconcious was "Wow, am I really sure I wanted this?"

When Jake woke up, his head was still spinning. As it stopped, he took in the surroundings, ready to jump if something was happening.

But he wasn't in the wilderness anymore. He seemed to be in a clinic, and the doctor was heading towards him.

______________________________________________________________
"You took quite the blow to the head, didn't you?" the doctor said.

"Where am I?" asked Jake, hoping to God that this whole awful experience was a dream.

"Wow, that monster must have hit you bad, kid. You're in Caliknistern, a city in the kingdom of Jendro. A group of hunters found you and brought you here. They say you had killed an Olanach. Takes quite the fighter to take one on alone."

So it's true, Jake spoke in his head. I have to get out of here.

"Do you know a way out?" Jake asked.

"Out? The front door is that way, but I recommend..."

"No, out of the virtual world," interuppted Jake.

(Awkward pause)

"Alright, kid, you'd better stay here for a few more days. You're not talking..."

"Sorry, I was rambling. I'll be going now," said Jake, thinking quickly.

"Alright then. Be careful not to get yourself in trouble though," said the rather confused doctor.
______________________________________________________________

Jake walked out onto the street, looking around. He was reminded of the textbook descriptions of the Victorian era. The arcitecture was Gothic, and horse-drawn carriages went through the streets. He started walking forward through the market square, where food and carpets were being sold and beggars littered the area. He looked to his right and saw slave traders, and to his left he saw monsters in cages. He looked around for people who had entered with him, but he recognized no one.

Suddenly, he remembered; the mind-link!

He tuned through each subconcious he could detect, sending this message to everyone.
Can anyone hear me? I am among your number, and I'm looking for a way out. If you can communicate in this way, send me a message as soon as you can.
Jake waited, and hoped for a response.

Grace sat bolt upright, having not even been aware she had fallen asleep. Tthe strange message scrolled across her mind in the way that an annoying song keeps repeating itself even though you're trying to forget it. 'A way out?' she wondered, not sure what the speaker had meant. Were they trapped somewhere? Were they speaking about the game in general? It didn't really make sense for someone to want out of the game when it had only just begun. Well, not much sense.

"I hear you, but I do not understand your meaning." She said, wondering if the thought would actually reach the person who had asked the question, but keeping in her mind that it would. She would not allow lack of confidence to cause something not to turn out properly. She looked out the window, noticing the pale light of predawn. As good a time as any to set out.

Grabbing her few belongings, including the night shirts, Grace dressed hurriedly and left the room, carefully shutting the door behind her. She dropped off the key on the counter, along with some gold to pay for the travel rations she had just pilfered from the kitchen. She then headed out into the brisk morning air, breathing in deeply as she paused on the outer porch of the 'Dragon's Keep'. The moon was still rather high, giving everything an ethereal glow in the predawn light which she used to gouge out her surroundings, chosing to head north out of town.

A sort of, something, was prompting her to head in that direction, hinting of some treasure. Grace supposed it was part of the game interface and so followed the prompt, for the time being. She was planning on traveling this virtual world, there was no harm in following the gameplay while she did.

CLint had finished only but a single sentense before he realized that he was talking YET AGAIN with his eyes closed. WHat few people there actually had been in the bar for him to discuss the program oddities of this so called "game" simply got up and left after he had begun speaking. "...DOES ANYONE BESIDES ME FIND ANY THING WRONG WITH THIS AT ALL!?" Attention spans seemed to be at an all time low for gamers these days...

Then he walked out too, wandering the streets until after the sun had fallen below the horizon. He leaned against the side of a general store in the ally, wanting to conserve his money for more important things than an inn. Suddenly, some powerful thought entered his head, spoken in a voice not his own. "Can anyone hear me? I am among your number, and I'm looking for a way out. If you can communicate in this way, send me a message as soon as you can." Clint couldn't communicate telepathically, but he could hack a message to be written in a wall next to the sender. He brought up the command window and had to spend half an hour manually fighting through new firewalls to reach an area where he could do this.

"I hear you." he said. "There are problems here, I don't think there's a way out. Tell me a place where we can meet to speak in person. My name is Clint."

Clint hit the X button on the command prompt when he was finished. "YEAGH!" He jumped back in surprise, as there was a rambling beggar in front of him only a couple of inches from his face. He wasn't reading like an NCP, but he kept saying te same thing over and over again. "DOn't you see, we're all trapped. We don't know how long we've been here you know?" He coughed an old man's cough. "No idea how old we are, we could already be dead... How many times have the programmers paused us while we're here? Impossible to know. I'm not hte only one old here I can almost guarantee it!" His eyes opened wide and he started to sound even more paranoid with a liberal dosage of fear now added on. "One way out. Never go there. Never get out. Zar knows the way. His castle. It's suicide to go." The old beggar then took it upon himself to fall to the floor for no apparant reason, as if he had given his last real world breath. He flickered out as one would expect to see a player who logged out. "was that a game tester?" he thought aloud.

Jake was doing whatever he could to better blend in to the enviornment. He had found some money in his pocket, and used it to buy proper clothes. He got a job as a blacksmith's assistant and spent the nights in a rented room.

One night, as he was falling asleep, a message scrolled through his head, bolting him awake. It sounded something like "I hear you, but I do not understand your meaning."

Although he didn't recognize who it was, he could tell it was female, and he simply fed his thoughts back into the invading mind, telling her...

"I've already been attacked once, and I'm certainly not ready to function in a society like this. Every day, I worry that the church will expose me as an Atheist, or that I'll botch a sword being made and not get my pay. I want to return to a life of comforts, no matter how miserable it gets. Well, I hope with my explanation, your satisfied."

With that out of the way, Jake tried to fall back asleep, but found it hard as his mind was racing. His eyes still open, he looked at the wall next to his bed, and saw letters being drawn on the wall, saying...

"I hear you. There are problems here, and I don't think there's a way out, tell me a place where we can meet to speak in person. My name is Clint."

Jake couldn't help but think, "Finally, someone smart." He channeled his thoughts to this Clint person, saying...

"Clint, I don't know where you are, but I'm in the kingdom of Jendro, in the town of Caliknistern. My name is Jake, although the locals know me as Jacob, so ask the blacksmith where Jacob is. Thanks in advance."

After all that, he eventually fell asleep.

Grace watched the strange conversation with the beggar, mightily confused. She had never had the opportunity to play video games growing up and so did not understand all the workings of these programs. It was like dropping someone in a foreign country, except that she understood what they were saying, to a certain extent.

“We were only given a specific allotment of time to assess this ‘virtual world’ After that we were supposed to be released back to our families. I do not remember the exact time allotment but I have a feeling it has already passed. Meaning either something has gone wrong, or they had no intention of releasing us in the first place. However, I am not one to profess understanding of things such as these and so would probably be of little use to you.” She said in reply to the questioners answer.

She glanced over at Clint and the strange beggar person who was just disappearing. “This is proving to be a very strange place indeed.” She said, wondering what the use would be of trapping so many people in a virtual world together. It did not make any logical sense to her. She pondered Clint's verbal query. "You believe that person may have been one of us?" The implications were worrisome, she did not want to be stuck in a tube for the rest of her life. What would her sensei think? He had been the one to prompt her into joining the competition.

Jake was finally sleeping, but was woken up by the sound of another voice going through his head, saying "Yes, I can hear you. I'll be there soon.".

Before Jake could respond, another teenage male appeared next to him. He looked very much like Jake did, except with blue hair, brown eyes, and a tatoo on his face. This person then said to him...

"Hi, if you want to know a way out, there isn't one. We're trapped in here and we can't find a way out, or contact the outside world!"

Jake was about to say something, but another four-hoofed beast burst through the wall. Jake remembered that the doctor told him it was called an olanach. The strange person then blasted it with a large fireball, knocking it down. To ensure it was dead, he dropped a boulder on it too. Then, for no reason, he disappeared.

Jake thought to himself "What the hell just happened? This guy just came in here, killed an olanach without breaking a sweat, and then vanished without even introducing himself, or discussing plans? What nerve!"

Just when he thought things couldn't get any worse, he heard voices shouting to the guards. In no time, guards came bolting into the room.
One of them pinned Jake to the ground, while the other spoke to him...
___________________________________________________________
"What happened here?" he said gruffly.

Jake's head was being pushed down, making it hard to talk.

"Olanach attacked," said Jake.

"How did you kill it, with no weapons?" the guard asked.

"I didn't kill him. Some other guy came here and killed him with fire," Jake doubted the guards would believe him, but he couldn't think of anything else.

The guards looked at each other. The guard holding him down said, "Do you think he's a witch?"

"Possibly," the other guard said. He directed his speech to Jake, "You'll be tried by the Inquisition tomarrow morning. In the meantime, you get thrown in the cell."
____________________________________________________________

As the guards dragged him away, Jake was thinking, "No, this can't be happening, this can't be happening."

The guards dragged him to his cell, which was under the church. The pungent stench of mildew was everywhere, and it had nothing but a pair of shackles. They chained him up and locked him in. Jake channeled his thoughts to Clint...

"Thanks to the idiocy of someone else, I'm being tried for witchcraft. You have to get to Caliknistern as soon as you can, and get me out of here! Please!"

Left with only one hope to cling to, he fell asleep.

Clint noticed grace at the other end of the alley. "Yeah. He was definately one of us. His data read like a player..." Then more thoughts from this telepath entered his head as he walked away, leaving Grace to her thoughts. "Clint, I don't know where you are, but I'm in the kingdom of Jendro, in the town of Caliknistern. My name is Jake, although the locals know me as Jacob, so ask the blacksmith where Jacob is. Thanks in advance."

"Caliknistern it is then..." he said, going over what all was in this town and where he could find a map. He realized that a shop owner would probably have that and a horse, and so for the first time he abandoned his frugality and aproached. It actually surprised him that it was open so late... "Hi. You have a map of Jendro on you?" he asked. The clerk simply replied. "We don't serve your kind here." He must've been reffering to his hacker status, a backfiring program to discourage hacking, either that or he hated night owls. "...whatever" he said walking out, knowing that the guy watched him. Autospawning would be impossible to do to without Eevee's outside help, so he'd have to steal. No problem right? He simply walked behind the shop, hopped on the guy's horse... and nearly got bucked off from it's anger and hatred towards him. The horse just continued to buck and buck until Clint pulled out his pistol, aiming it at the monster's head and saying "Do my bidding or I fire." Surprisingly, it worked...

"Now, which direction did the message come from?" He said aloud. Just then, he heard a third message pop into his head to confirm exactly where to go. "Thanks to the idiocy of someone else, I'm being tried for witchcraft. You have to get to Caliknistern as soon as you can, and get me out of here! Please!" That was the deciding factor, he was gone. He took up the horse's reins, pulled down his hat so it wouldn't blow off, and pointed himself to the east...
