"Yeah, that's a big problem... who're you gonna appoint?" Kaoru asked, obviously remaining somewhat dazed. He probably would've picked up on the subtle hint if his brain were functioning at 100%. Of course, he might've read too much into the situation... he was alway at one extreme or the other.

"Me? Really?" Kaoru shouted excitedly, getting a bit carried away and hurting his shoulder and he jumped up, "of course I would! Just what would I have to do?" He wagged his tail rapidly, the wince from his injured shoulder passing in an instant. To say the least, he was glad to actually have work to do around his master's mansion. It might cut don on time spent helping Gretchen learn english, but he was sure he'd be ableto fit it all in somewhere.

"I wouldn't be so hasty with your acceptance. The job is...well..." Chase said having a hard time explaining.
"You become stained. For you to understand though, I'm going to have to tell you what happened. Meet me in the Library tomorrow. That will be the best place to start." he said standing up. He seemed to have a lot on his mind, something that was burdening him.

"Well... alright." Kaoru said, stopping to ponder what his master had said, "I guess I'll see you there then." His tail wagged slowly as he thought, scratching his chin. It was the only time he really seemed to have looked away from Chase, but he could tell that his master was troubled.
"Come back soon. And if you need anyone to talk to, just let me know, okay?" Kaoru smiled, looking up at his master.

Chase looked at him and nodded leaving to go back to his room with his cane. He was beginning to wonder if he was going to be able to open up his past. Grabbing the door knob to his room he hesitated looking down the hallway at the library. Entering the library he looked up at the painting of his family. His hand shook as he held his cane his eyes not leaving the painting. He had only cried once for them. This was the second time that he was able to find tears.
"I'm sorry..........." he mummbled as his shoulders shook.

Kaoru was planning to follow his master out of his room, but just then, one of the maids came into his room to change his bandages. Sighing, he rested his cheek in his hand as the wound was tended. His master looked upset as he was leaving. Once the woman was finished changing his bandages, he headed off toward the library, moving about sneakily so that he wouldn't be returned to his room.

Chase was on his knees in the middle of the library using his cane as support.
"I don't want to do it anymore............I don't want to put him at risk........if I lose him.........if he ends up like James..............." he said his shoulders still shaking as he spoke in a choking voice.

Kaoru entered the library quietly, still sneaking around to make sure he wouldn't be spotted. That was when he heard his master crying in front of the painting. Quickly, he ducked behind one of the bookshelves, ashamed that he would be listening in on Chase. I'll go talk with him in a little bit once he's cried it all out... He thought, perking up his ears so he could hear what his master was saying.

The door to the library suddenly opened and a familiar face poked her head in.
"Kitty! Are you being getting better?" she asked happily.
Chase raised his head at the sound of Gretchen's voice. Quickly straightening up he stood taking a handkerchief that was always in his pocket and wiped his face dry real quick while still keeping his back to the door.

Kaoru practically jumped out of his skin when he heard Gretchen's voice. His tail floofed out as a result of his fright, and he peeked out from behind the bookshelf, waving timidly at Gretchen.
"Hullo Gretch." Kaoru smiled weakly.

Chase turned and looked at Gretchen in the door and to Kaoru who was now in his sight. How much did he hear?
Gretch looked at him curiously then to Chase then back to Kaoru.
"Oh...I sorry, I interupt. I come back later." she said her face turning a little red. She mouthed the word "sorry" to Kaoru telling that he was trying to keep out of sight. She herself was usually a little spy, that's how she knew so much about what was going on. She closed the door behind her.

"S'okay," Kaoru mouthed back to Gretchen, smiling faintly before he turned back to Chase, "I'm sorry for trying to eavesdrop. I only just got in, so I didn't hear anything." He bowed his head as he spoke, obviously sorry for what he had done.

"It's alright...even if you had heard anything you probably would have found out anyway." he said looking at him. He was silent for a moment a bit embarassed that he had lost it.
"James wasn't always like that..." he said deciding that it was a good place to start and a good way to explain a bit on why he had broken down.

"Really? What happened to him?" Kaoru asked, all too aware of the butler's true nature, "why'd he go so crazy?" He had a feeling he might be able to find the answer if he thought hard enough, but he wanted to hear it from his master first.
