Ra’Shae lay on top of her roof, staring up at the full moon, and the quiet stars. This was Ra’Shae’s favorite spot for relaxation, and now it was her favorite place to think about Halberd. When she lay here, she could forget that he wasn’t next to her, if only for a while. A shooting star fell across the sky, and she made a wish upon it. Her wish, her only wish nowadays, was to be able to see Halberd again, to feel him in her arms. She’d taken to skipping meals, and forgetting to read her books at night, because the pain was just to intense to try to forget him. Whenever she tried to stop thinking, she felt that she was betraying him, and that she wasn’t upholding her end of the bargain, whatever that was. Ra’Shae felt like that often, but never knew quite what it was she felt. “Ra’Shae!†Called a voice from down below. Her mother must be wondering where she’d gone. Ra’Shae hadn’t found it convenient to inform her mother what had happened, no matter what type of prying she’d used to get the information from her. Ra’Shae’s mother had never understood her from the day she was born. Though they looked almost exactly the same, they’d never been close. “Ra’Shae!†Her mother’s voice called frantically. “Where are you?†Ra’Shae decided to take pity on her mother and called out. “I’m up her mother.†She heard her mother walk off the porch, and look up at Ra’Shae. “How many times have I told you not to go up there Shae?†Her mother asked. “I lost count a long time ago.†Ra’Shae called back. “You don’t control me.†“Yes, dear, I know, but don’t you think it’s a bad idea to lay up there?†Ra’Shae’s mother’s question hung thickly in the air for about thirty seconds. “No, I think it’s perfectly alright for me to be up here.†Ra’Shae called down. “Shae, please come down.†Her mother coddled. “I don’t want to.†Ra’Shae called back. “I like it up here a lot.†“Alright, you can stay up there for a while and then you get right back down here.†Ra’Shae’s mother called up. “Do we have a deal?†“Alright, we have a deal.†Ra’Shae muttered, not meaning to make it loud enough for her mother to hear, but she did, because she went back inside the house. Those were the words that she had said to Halberd when she learned his name. His grin and laugh had seemed so out of place after that fight with the wolves, but somehow it also seemed appropriate at the same time. His eyes had been filled with concern for her, and yet mirth at the same time as he watched her stumble her way around talking with her. Those eyes, they were so expressive, and she knew that she would probably never see them again. “Will I ever see you again?†She had asked. “This is goodbye.†He had said. Ra’Shae closed her eyes, wiling the pain to go away. She couldn’t live with such pain. Tears rolled down her cheek, despite her closed eyes. A car drove down the road near bye, and she opened her eyes to look at it as it passed by. It pulled up in front of her house. For some reason, she didn’t like the look of it, so crawled behind the chimney before turning to look back at the car. Out of the car stepped two men, dressed in suits, and carrying a letter between them. Ra’Shae gasped. She knew one of them. He was a coworker with her father, when he went to distant countries on various side trips. Her father was currently on one of those trips right now. What these men were doing here, Ra’Shae could only wonder. The two of them walked up to the door and knocked. Ra’Shae could hear everything going on down on the porch, even though she couldn’t see them. Her mother answered the door. “Hello, what can I do…?†Her mother’s voice trailed off. “Miss Wilson,†Ra’Shae caught the subtly change in address and stifled a scream. “We are sorry to tell you, but your husband has just died.†Ra’Shae went numb inside, and the silence was almost a tangible thing as she knew he mother was looking at the two men in absolute terror. “You must be mistaken.†She said in a broken tone. “He can’t be dead. He can’t be.†Ra’Shae’s mother’s voice cracked. “You’re lying.†Ra’Shae barely heard that. Then there came an unearthly scream of anguish as Ra’Shae’s mother realized her loss. Ra’Shae felt cold tears roll down her cheeks, and now more then ever, she wanted Halberd to be by her side to comfort her.

Chapter Three: Together “You ready for me this time, little boy?†Century taunted Halberd, drawing his blade. “You know last time you took a very thorough beating.†Century laughed. “Yes, but that was when I was weak. I won’t let anything distract me this time.†Halberd responded to Century’s jab. “You are weak if you must taunt me so.†“Let’s say we raise the stakes a little bit.†Century said to Halberd. “Mix things up a little. If you win, then I’ll tell you a way that you can spend sometime with Ra’Shae.†Century laughed at the way that Halberd’s eyes suddenly opened wide. “You lose, and you don’t see her over the summer.†“Those are very high stakes, old man.†Halberd replied, yawning. “You sure you can go against the elders in such a way?†“I’m impressed that you say through that one so quickly.†Century said proudly. “Yes, I will tell you where, and how you can see her if you win.†Century switched which of his hands were holding his sword. “What do you say, little man?†“I wasn’t planning on losing anyway.†Halberd yawned again. “I take your challenge. I hope you have fun being humiliated though. I won’t lose with such stakes.†“We’ll see about that.†Century laughed. “Summon your blade, let’s begin.†Halberd twisted his hand, and suddenly it was surrounded by light. His metal vine shrouded sword appeared in his hands. He moved one of his hands over it, and everything seemed to grow duller, the details, the edges, and the colors even. Century did the same, and the two of them stared across the room at each other. “Let’s go.†Century said. When Halberd didn’t move, he lowered his room and started to walk towards his sparring partner. Halberd exploded into motion as soon as Century came within fifteen feet. He shot forward like a dart, his blade sweeping in at diagonal direction. Century raised his blade and parried the powerful blow. Then his left hand shot out, punching Halberd in the chest. At the same time, Halberd launched his own left hook, which caught Century across the jaw. Both of them stumbled back, staring at one another. Century made the first move after that. His left foot slid back and his right foot forward. Then he sprinted forwards, but at the last moment, he twisted to the right, and then to the left, his blade heading towards Halberd’s chest. Halberd ducked under the blade, and turned with Century’s charge, kicking out one of his legs. Century collapsed to the floor, and his blade almost fell from his hand. Halberd was upon him as quickly as he fell, his blade in reverse grip, and he thrust downwards. Century had deceived Halberd though, and his blade slipped up to deflect the blade harmlessly wide, while his left foot shot out to sweep at Halberd’s. Halberd jumped over the foot attack, and swept his blade down at Century’s other leg. Century managed to dodge the attack, but at the cost that he didn’t have the footing to get back on his feet. Halberd’s blade descended in reverse grip again. Century rolled to the side, his left hand shooting up to grab Halberd’s sword hand. When he gripped the hilt, he pulled as hard as he could, while his sword swung up to hit Halberd in the side. To Century’s surprise, Halberd went down with the pull, and avoided the sword of Century. Halberd smacked his forehead into Century’s and then rolled away, back on his feet. When he turned, he noticed that Century was on his feet as well, with his sword swinging in a powerful arc towards Halberd’s head. Halberd jumped to the side, and then he rolled under the next attack, his free hand punching Century’s knee as he passed. Century groaned, but his left hand caught Halberd’s wrist. Halberd was pulled to his feet, and towards Century’s returning sword. Halberd did something unexpected. He jumped high, cleared the sword, and smashed both of his knees into Century’s back. Century let go of Halberd’s wrist and the two of them crashed to the floor. Century, for his credit, was fast enough to roll Halberd off of him, and the two of them returned to their feet. Halberd’s face was clear of emotion, and so was Century’s. The two of them scouted each other, searching for a weakness. At the moment, Century was much more beaten up, but he was the more skilled, and experienced fighter. He’d seen it all before. If Halberd could just come up with an attack that Century’d never seen before, then the battle would be his. An idea came to his head, and he charged Century again, his sword lunging in at Century’s knee. Century acted in the way that Halberd expected him to, and he shifted to his side. But instead of his sword leading the way, it was a bare fist, and when Century sliced down with his sword, he missed cleanly, and Halberd’s fist connected with Century’s knee. At the same time, his left hand held the sword, which swept down towards Century’s exposed back. Century smashed his left hand into Halberd’s face, making him stagger back before the sword could connect. Taking advantage of this, he rammed his knee forward into Halberd’s stomach, and Halberd once again fell to the floor. Halberd had seen this coming however, and had braced himself at just the right moments for each of the hits he endured. When Century stabbed downward with his blade, Halberd rolled to the side, and his left hand shot up again, making his sword connect with Century’s chest.

Century stumbled back, rubbing his chest with his free hand. “Very good.†Halberd rolled to his feet, and dismissed his sword. “Will you tell me where I can see her again now? I have won fair and square, I deserve my reward.†“Don’t get worked up.†Century chided. “Yes, I will tell you.†Century sighed and walked over to the furniture. “First we must take care of the furniture.†Without a word, Halberd walked over to the furniture piled against the wall, and pushed them back into place. “I’m more impressed.†Century stated when Halberd finished. “It was my task to move everything back to its proper place, as the loser, but you did it for me. Thank you.†Century walked around the room, and fell onto his favorite couch. “Where can I find Ra’Shae?†Halberd asked without a moment’s hesitation. “Settle down, my young friend.†Century raised one of his eyebrows. “As you probably know by now, her educational system is releasing her for several months after this day. Today they are holding a farewell dance, and your young human girl will be going to the dance.†Century sighed. “Are you sure?’ Halberd asked. “Fairly certain, yes.†Century replied, amused. “You don’t trust me?†“Not really, no.†Halberd answered quickly. “You have been opposing me in this for two weeks now, and suddenly you help me to find her. What’s your game?†“I have no catch this time. No lesson for you to learn. I am letting you go.†Century explained. “It’s hard for me to explain it, but I feel that you are ready.†Halberd sat quietly in his chair at the ‘foot’ of Century’s couch. “Are you sure?†He asked finally. “Even though I am flying straight into the elders’ faces.†“My friend, you’ve shown a strong will, and a sense of what is right and wrong in this world. I hardly expect you to be eaten by the world out there.†Century sighed again. “The social gathering starts in a couple of hours. Why don’t you get dressed in something nice?†Halberd looked down at his clothes. “What’s wrong with these?†Century laughed. “It seems you still have much to learn.â€

Ra’Shae seated herself in one of the chairs against the wall, watching her schoolmates dance, laugh and have fun, while the music blared loudly in her ears. Alicia followed after her friend. “Come on Shae, there has to be somebody out there you want to dance with.†Alicia tried to comfort Ra’Shae. “I mean look at all the other guys out there.†“I am, and all I’m seeing is how none of them is Halberd.†Ra’Shae answered. Alicia seemed stung by this retort, and she looked down on Ra’Shae, standing up. “Fine, I’ll go have myself a wonderful time, and you can sit here and be miserable.†Alicia took off into the crowd of people. “Alicia!†Ra’Shae called after her, but it was no use. Ra’Shae glanced down at the floor, maybe it was time to loosen up, and try to forget Halberd. He wasn’t like to come here, and he probably wouldn’t ever take the time to find her after this dance either. She made up her mind, and stood up, determined to dance, and have fun, if only for this one night. She moved off into the crowd, searching for Alicia.

Halberd looked down at his ridiculous clothes and sighed. He wore a black tuxedo, and black pants. His wild black hair had been combed, brushed, and washed until it fell straight, his bangs covering half of his forehead. Underneath he still wore his shirt which contained his sword, but other than that, his clothes felt completely foreign. He glanced up at the school, his eyes taking in the lights, and the people still pulling up to the parking lot, and going in. He mustered his courage, and walked down the hill towards the school nestled in the small valley. As he reached the door, he saw a women sitting at a desk, with a container in front of her, and a list of names next to that. “Good evening, sir.†The woman said as he moved up. “I don’t recognize you, do you go to this school.†Halberd looked down at her. “No, but I should be on that list anyway.†Century had pulled some strings with other vampires, and several human contacts to get his name on that list. “And what would be your name, sir?†She asked politely. “My name is Halberd Shadowtendril.†He replied. She looked at the list, and soon found his name. “Ah, here you are.†She said triumphantly. “That would be ten dollars.†Halberd awkwardly reached into one of his suit pockets and pulled out a ten dollar bill, handing it to the woman. “Thank you, I hope you have a great time.†The woman nodded at him, and motioned towards the doors. Halberd walked over, and pushed the doors in, and the set of doors beyond that one. He paid no attention to the people’s faces, other then the young women’s trying to mind Ra’Shae. He followed the arrows until he reached a door where music came blasting out of. As he reached the doors, somebody opened them, and he was exposed to the full volume of the music. He fought the instinct to clasp his hands to his ears, and just moved into the room with the music. It was a very large room, with many humans dancing in all different fashions around the room. The floor was wooden, and the ceiling high, and crisscrossed with steel. Halberd walked into the room, looking for Ra’Shae. He found her scent on the air, and followed it blindly for a while, lost. Anybody who got in his way he gently stepped around. Soon, she was in sight. Her back was turned to him, but he could smell her, and he recognized the shape of her body, and the color of her hair. He walked over to behind her; she seemed to be talking to another girl wearing a dress and seeming to be very awkward in it. “Shae, there’s somebody behind you.†The girl in the dress pointed out. Ra’Shae spun quickly, and her beautiful blue eyes opened with surprise when she saw Halberd. Her mouth dropped open slightly, and she moved her hands to cover them. “Halberd?†She asked quietly. Had he not been a vampire, Halberd would not have heard her. “I’ll tell you my name if you tell me yours.†Halberd said to her. “Halberd!†Ra’Shae screamed out, throwing her arms around him. “I thought I’d never see you again. She whispered into his ear. “I thought I’d never see you, but it’s funny how these things turn out.†Halberd whispered back. “I’ve missed you.†He told her silently. “I need to talk to you, alone please.†Ra’Shae told him silently.

Halberd nodded, and took her hand. She lead him back outside the way that he’d come in, and across the busy road over to a garden. To his night eyes, the colors were much more vibrant, and richer than they could ever have been in the day. Ra’Shae threw her arms around him again once they were out in the garden, and he could feel her shaking with tears. Halberd brought his arms around her, and stroked her silky blonde hair. “What’s the matter?†Halberd asked her softly. “Why are you crying? I can make it better, just tell me.†Halberd rocked back and forth slightly as he held her, and he could feel his shoulder getting wet. “My f-f-father, h-he’s d-d-d-dead.†She stuttered, and a fresh torrent of tears overcame her. “When did this happen?†Halberd gently asked, putting his lips against her ear. “When did you feel this great pain?†“A week ago.†Ra’Shae responded. She sighed when she felt his lips tickling her ear, and she stopped to crying, trying to enjoy the moment. “He was away on a business trip, and he got killed by a random terrorist act.†Halberd patted her shoulder, and kissed the crown of her head. “What type of world is this that such things must happen?†Halberd inquired of the crisp night air. “Why is it that the old die and the young suffer?†Ra’Shae could sense in his a pain greater than her own. “What happened to make your words so sorrowful?†Ra’Shae asked, burying her face in his neck. “I’m an orphan.†Halberd replied quietly. Were the night windy, his words would have been lost. Ra’Shae came out of Halberd’s neck to look him in the eyes. “I’m so sorry for you.†Ra’Shae laid her head against his muscular chest. “I don’t want this to end.†She said after a while, as the two of them rocked gently to the music of the crickets, and the far distant cars. “It doesn’t have to end.†Halberd told her. “You can come with me.†He whispered into her hair. “We don’t have to let it end like this, not tonight.†“I would do anything to be with you, just tell me what I’d have to do.†Ra’Shae asserted her face still against his chest. “Are you sure you’d do anything?†Halberd asked. “Anything at all?†“Yes.†Ra’Shae answered quickly. “You’d have to let me blood you then.†The vampire told Ra’Shae. “What’s that?†She asked, pulling her face away from Halberd’s chest, looking up into his eyes. “You humans would probably be more familiar with the term transfusion.†Halberd explained. “When a vampire transfers its blood into a human, we call that blooding.†“Oh.†Ra’Shae said lamely. “I didn’t know that.†She paused. “Alicia probably did though.†“Who’s Alicia?†Halberd asked. “Oh, she’s just a friend of mine.†Ra’Shae laughed. “She’s crazy about vampires.†Ra’Shae paused, looking deep into Halberd’s eyes. “What would happen if I let you blood me? Would I turn into a vampire as well?†“Yes, you would, and you’d also have to leave your life behind, and take a new one with me.†Halberd supplied quickly. “There would be a tremendous price. One of almost constant pain for a month and a half, at least.†“Why would there be such pain? I thought that it was a simple process. You bite me, and then I turn into a vampire.†Ra’Shae laughed.

“If only it were that simple. It would spare you much pain if it were.†Halberd glanced up at the starry sky. “The blood of a vampire is dominant, and it seeks to destroy all other forms of blood it comes into contact with.†Halberd explained softly. “I have to force some of my blood into your blood stream before the actually process begins. You’d feel fine for just about a week; before my blood had gained the ground it needed to begin its attack on the rest of your blood.†Halberd stopped to look down at Ra’Shae. “That sounds painful.†Ra’Shae said with a slight smile. “I can endure any amount of pain to be with you.†“That’s good to hear.†Halberd whispered into her ear. “Next, your senses will begin to turn strange on you. During this stage, there is little pain, but your eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and the nerves on your body will begin to adjust to the super senses of my kind. After that, your muscles and bones will gain strength, and a little bit of size.†“I wouldn’t mind a little bit of muscle mass.†Ra’Shae interrupted lightly. Halberd laughed. “You’re just fine the way you are.†“Other than the fact that I’m a human, of course.†Ra’Shae said bitterly. “I can’t ask you to make this sacrifice lightly, Ra’Shae.†Halberd told her, his voice very suddenly serious. “If you don’t want to, then I’d understand.†“No, I want to be with you.†Ra’Shae answered quickly. “You’re making this so much more difficult then you seem to feel it is. I’d be willing to endure a year of extreme pain, just for one day with you.†“How sweet.†Halberd muttered silently. “Are you making fun of me?†Ra’Shae complained. “Would I do that?†Halberd stared down at the girl in his arms, eyes wide and innocent. “Yes, I believe you would.†Ra’Shae giggled. “That’s okay though, I’d do the same to you.†Ra’Shae brushed her lips against Halberd’s quickly. “Anyway,†Halberd continued, a slight grin on his face. “As soon as your muscles and skeletal system change, your blood will start to be purged from your body.†Halberd stopped. “Let me rephrase that.†“Permission granted.†Ra’Shae said impudently. “Thank you.†Halberd brushed Ra’Shae’s cheek with his hand. “The human parts of your blood will begin to be purged from your body. You will bleed at random times, usually from the bite wound, assuming that’s the place you get my blood from, as well as from several other places. Your blood will purge through your mouth, nose, ears, sometimes your eyes, and…†Halberd hesitated. Ra’Shae looked up to see a blush on his face. “I think I get the picture. Any open part on my body pretty much, yes?†“That’s about it, yes.†Halberd agreed. “The second to last stage in the Purge is you ‘die.’†“This thing will kill me?†Ra’Shae gasped. “No, not really. You’re body just shuts down for sixteen to eighteen hours.†“Thanks.†Ra’Shae said dryly. “Is there anything else I should know?†Halberd glanced down into her deep blue eyes, and then he shook his head. “You know, as I’ve said before-†“I want to do it. Whatever I have to do to be with you, Halberd, I won’t hesitate. You don’t get it do you?†Ra’Shae burst out. “You don’t get what I feel?†There was a silent accusation in her eyes, which she promptly lowered. “I’m sorry.†She apologized.
