A new smell reached the cub's nose. It filled her senses, and for a moment calmed her. The hungry cries started again, pausing at the touches, replaced by cub-grunts. Nothing calmed a cub quite like being lifted, though, and she dangled quietly. Slowly, she peeked her eyes open, blinking against the light. When everything finally focused, she looked around, then down at a pair of black paws below them. She noticed that she, too, was black. Those HAD to be Momma's paws, then! When she glanced next to her, she spotted her sister, whose smell she knew so well. She was black, too... Like Momma! The cub closed her eyes, mentally settling for the trip. This had to be their mother, so the world was all good again.

Hippy would have smiled if her mouth hadn't been full. The cubs were making good noises, showing their will to live. They'd be okay, and even if they'd been abandoned as she thought, they would get a good life in the shelter of her pride. She felt her heart swell a little, a new sort of usefulness filling a part of her she didn't know was empty.
Maybe it was destiny that brought the cubs to her... but she didn't care to question it. They were hers now.
