The Look was all La needed to keep herself on track, and she moved laboriously slowly, meticulously picking chips of shell away from membrane, chewing her lip all the while. She didn't even hear Cordel's request from the other healer; her focus was entirely on the egg and the growing hole and the thin cries she could hear from the firelizard inside. At Cordel's order, she touched the membrane and nodded. She handed Egg to Cordel without a word, stepping slightly to the side and watching him work in silence.
The apprentice who arrived with a bowl of meat was a surprise to La, who hadn't heard the request, but she smiled gratefully and murmured her thanks before turning her attention back to Cordel. It felt like an eternity before the cry finally reached the air and the 'lizard was free. La gasped when she saw him, but it turned immediately into a croon, and she moved forward, first hesitant, but less so with the push from the Dragonhealer.
"Hullo, little one...little bronze," she murmured, rubbing eyeridges with one finger even as she picked up a sliver of meat in the other hand. The piece disappeared down a ravenous gullet, then another, and a third. And then La was lost in the moment of Impression, less strong than a dragon's, but certainly no less moving.
"Oh, darling," she breathed, pausing in her feeding for a moment. The flitt flared his wings and hissed at her, mouth open and eyes whirling red.
"Kreeeee," he answered, little head darting forward and snatching the meat out of her hand. La cooed and fished out another piece, looking back at Cordel.
"Thank you...thank you so much," she said quietly.

Cordel eyed the little flit carefully, searching for any imperfections that might spell the tiny creature’s doom. He seemed perfectly fine, perfectly formed except for the egg shell. Well, good. That was a happy ending for what could have been a very sad story. He opened his mouth to identify the hatchling as a Bronze, but La recognized it quickly. Well, she was a dragonrider, he figured, so she ought to be able to recognize obvious things like that.
“You’re welcome,” he said, trying not to smile too much. But he really was rather pleased with the dragonrider’s performance, especially considering that this was her own pet she was working with. She was good at keeping her head level, an important trait in any type of Healer, human or dragon. “You did a good job with Egg. Although I suppose you might be thinking of changing his name now.”
While La continued to bond with her new firelizard, Cordel went about quietly cleaning up. The tools had to be disinfected again, after all, and he needed to do something about the egg shells. He touched them once more, studying them closely before offering them to La. “Do you want to keep these as a memento of his hatching? Of course, the hatchling himself should serve as sufficient proof that he was born…” but Cordel was a sentimental type; he liked having such things around and assumed that La might as well.
The tools were put to one side; he’d get someone to boil them later and then put some redwort on them.

"I'll call him something else now, probably, yes," La said absently, attention already wholly absorbed again by the hungry flitt. He seemed to be wearing down for the moment and was more interested in inspecting La’s hands and wrists than eating the food she offered him. Sniffing her and peeping softly, he turned his head away and waddled toward the bowl, leaning his chin on the edge curiously. La gently scooped him up from the bowl, settling him firmly in the crook of one elbow, and though he keened in a vaguely miffed way, he made no move to escape.
Handing Cordel a few of the tools with her still-free hand, La tipped her head thoughtfully at the shell when he asked. It wasn’t something she would have thought of, but…it was a nice idea. “I think I would, yes,” she answered with a nod. Cleaning them on her own would be no problem at all. She reached out and picked one up, offering it to the flitt, who sniffed it, nibbled it lightly, and then peeped. La grinned hugely at him and then turned to Cordel.
“Thank you again,” she said. “I know I’m repeating myself, but…I can’t say it enough.” If it weren’t for the flitt in one arm, she would have thrown herself at him in a bear hug like a child would do. Instead, she settled for attempting a completely awkward one-armed hug that she would probably feel stupid about later. But now, she was too happy to care.
Annoyed that someone else was getting attention he wanted, the little bronze ‘lizard chittered angrily and nipped at La’s arm. She looked down at him and laughed, re-settling him so she could lift him to face-height and kiss him on the nose. Then she scooped up the eggshells and looked at Cordel.
“I’ll be here tomorrow morning,” she began, “if it’s all right for me to bring him along as well…”

Yep. Quiet moments like these, this was what reminded Cordel of why he wanted to be a Healer. The hours were long, the work was unpredictable, and there was always the risk of failing to save people (even friends)… but today he had managed to make someone happy and save a life. That was a good feeling, one of those nicely warm and fuzzy ones. There was just something special about realizing that, ‘oshit. That firelizard would have died if it wasn’t for me. I am awesome!’. “You’re still welcome. Although if you keep repeating yourself, you might be slightly less welcome…”
Only slightly less egotistical than that because tomorrow would bring something tougher. “Yes, you should bring him along. He’ll need to learn manners if he’s to be in the Infirmary. Can’t start that too early.” Hmm… already the flit seemed a bit possessive of La or at least of her attentions. They would have to work on that since La would have to focus on dragons and possibly other firelizards. And the dragonriders themselves, of course.
“Just remember that he’ll need to be fed a lot.” Then again, the girl was a dragonrider, wasn’t she? She ought to know this already, since she had raised her dragon and all. “Just like a smaller version of a dragon. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Hopefully by then, he thought, he’d know her name at least.
