"He's just... he's not very nice about it," sighed Babylon, and left it at that because he had the distinct sense that he was whining. There would be a time and a place to find sympathetic ears about the rigors of knight training, but that would probably be in a long letter to Vin and not here, to Virgo, who had fond memories of his ancestor.

Virgo probably didn't care that his ancestor didn't like him very much, anyways, resolved Babylon. She had bigger things to worry about, like the civilians back at the temple and her guard. He ought to be grateful that she was taking this time to talk to him, even though he wasn't who she thought he was. Which all that thought did was feed into the inferiority complex 'Menachem' was apparently building in his squire.

"He must have liked you a lot," he conceded. With the knight so intent on not acknowledging that Babylon Squire was an heir to the lights of Babylon, to just give a piece of the light to someone must have taken tremendous fondness. "Where is it?" he asked. "Here on Virgo?"

Or maybe it was on earth? He assumed that, like every other senshi, Virgo must spend some time on Earth.

She nodded, fussing with the arrangement of the altar cloth. "They never are. My mentor played pranks on me all the time, but Menachem would never do that. I know him." Knew him? She didn't know how to refer to a friend so far in the past his name seemed to be forgotten by everyone. Nor one who apparently made his descendant feel so terrible, although she knew there had to be a reason that Menachem wasn't being very nice to the next Babylon Knight. She didn't really care, either. He would always be Menachem, her good friend. After a moment, when the aged-white cloth lay as she wanted it to, she rubbed her face and turned to her friend's descendant.

"It's up in my room," she said, pointing upwards. Or the room that had been hers. Right now it was unaccessible, and she didn't really know what she should do about it. Certainly she didn't want to fix it while there were civilians who couldn't respect the least word the Zodiacs said were around.

She sighed. "You can see it from certain angles."

"Oh." Babylon bit his lip indecisively, staring pointedly at the layout of items on the altar. He felt terrible about all this, really, he did. Even if he was the present knight of Babylon, that didn't seem to give him any right to go about poking into the affairs of the former. "Past the last set of stairs?"

He'd noticed it - everyone had noticed the set of spiral stairs on the third floor - but they looked rickety at best. Babylon wasn't particularly willing to be the one to break them more. Cause of injury: fell though a thousand-year-old staircase didn't sound particularly appealing to him. "I'll just... um... wait."

He smiled lamely at her, the barest of twists at the corner of his lips. Babylon knew where he wasn't wanted and where people were only making offers out of politeness. "It's okay," he assured her, and added, "I'm sorry," although he wasn't sure what he was apologizing for.

I'm sorry pretty much seemed to sum up this entire conversation.

She nodded. "Yes. That's where my room is, or should be." Virgo knew the layout like the back of her hand, even if she'd never set foot up there in this lifetime. She didn't know if it was intact at all, and she felt a certain amount of dread at the idea of going up and finding that place destroyed. It held plenty more memories than even thoughts of Babylon did.

"You don't have to be sorry," she said to Babylon Squire. "You're not Menachem. I don't expect you to be." Anymore.

But you did, Babylon filled in for her, although he tried his best to keep the sentiment from showing on his face. "Well, if you need any help," he offered lamely, still feeling deflated and defeated, "I guess that's what I'm here for." It wasn't like there was any point in staying on the outpost if he wasn't here to help, was there?

Babylon glanced at the altar table, appraising the strange collection of artifacts that Virgo had laid out on the tablecloth. He was reluctant to ask about what kind of ritual they were used in, in case that constituted some kind of intergalactic etiquete faux pas. Virgo was sweet enough, but he'd cause enough damage here already. "I'll keep an eye out for any more of your stuff, yeah?" asked Babylon, gesturing vaguely. "It couldn't have gotten too far, could it?"

Unless this place had been looted by, like, space pirates. Which was a definite possibility.

"I mean," added Babylon, "You weren't looted by space pirates, were you?"

She smiled at him, her smile a lot less warm and a lot more professional. "I'm okay right now, actually, but I know there's a lot of people in the infirmary who could use attention. I'm just fixing things over here..." Virgo patted the altar cloth, and then traced a finger around the place where her book would go. Everything had its place and she wanted it restored, even if the meaning behind the ritual was lost to everyone but her. Even if the magic had gone from Virgoan blood, she knew she had to get it all back.

Every single bit.

"We weren't looted as far as I know," she said, "The rest of the civilizations were probably wiped out before whatever killed us got to us. Everyone died at the same time, that's all."

Virgo paused for a moment. "I think."

Babylon quirked one bushy eyebrow. In this moment, his loyalties were torn between making Virgo like him better and making Europa like him better. Winning Virgo's favor probably meant butting out and going to find more of the Zodiac's lost stuff. Improving his standings with Europa he could only guess required following the dialogue tree to the very end.

However, Babylon decided to go with the more immediate issue. Virgo was right in front of him and she wasn't entirely pleased with him, and that meant it was time to mind his own business. "So it should all still be here somewhere?" he hazarded to guess.

The Zodiac did not reply, engrossed as she was in arranging the altar.

"I'll go... look for it some more," supplied the squire, taking a step away from her, and then another. "It was nice to meet you, Captain Virgo."

Even if, he thought as he left, it was not clear yet whether she liked him at all.
