As always, swimming in the ocean felt like a homecoming to Ronan - a bitter sweet one, but a homecoming none the less. Each stroke ebbed away at any left over stiffness and stress he had and soon enough he was simply letting himself enjoy the feeling of the water.
Swimming with someone else was a relatively unfamiliar experience, but not an unpleasant one, though he did have to remember to breathe a bit more often. It wouldn't do any good to have other man worrying about him getting enough air.
Ronan kept his pace with Phiel for the most part, but every now and again he would increase speed slightly, just to see if the other man would match it. Casual or not, he was curious as to how they would do.

Matching that pace was natural for Phiel. This was the one thing that he'd enjoyed out of school -- competitive swimming had always been his refuge, a way to exorcise the demons that hung heavy in his head. When it was just the water and him, it was easy to overthink things -- but with another body to follow, that became his sole focus, made it easy to demand more of his muscles and bones than they ordinarily would have given. He sucked air, relishing the dull burn at the ends of each breath.

The comfortable pace continued for several more minutes, Ronan making sure to not go into too deep of water as they swam. This was good, great even, and yet... still not quite enough. Checking their position relative to shore the selkie caught sight of a flash blue, the frei waiting back on the beach, and decided that play time was over.
Coming to a stop Ronan blew excess water out of his mouth, treading water to stay in place. There was a glint in his eye. "Interested in a race back to shore?" He could have just taken off on his own, but this at least would prevent a one person competition.

Phiel kicked softly as well, treading water as he looked up at Ronan, grinning crookedly. "I'd like that, yes," he said, laughing as he shook salty water out of his curls. "On your mark, then?" He wasn't quite tiring yet, but he could feel it coming. He had a good while left in his bones, and there was excitement in a race, as always.

"Sounds good to me." Ronan double checked their position relative to shore, lining himself up next to the other man as he continued to tread water. "On your mark, set... GO!"
After the word left his mouth the selkie launched himself into the waves, limbs slicing through the water quick and fast. Even with the burn on his lungs, laughter bubbled in his throat. Win or lose, this felt great.
