A small smirk and dry laugh at that pointed comment.
Sonia nodded, “I know.”
Yes, the bed was his. As was the dresser, the desk, and both bookshelves. The room to which she stored her few belongings in was his, the house, the yard and even the driveway where she parked her car.
Everything was temporary.
No lease agreement that bound her here for a certain time frame, no rent owed save for what she offered for increased utilities. She was under no illusion as to how quickly his generosity could be taken away. That she may come home to find her belongings out on the lawn for her to gather and cart away.
Didn’t think he’d go quite that far but she could only be a tolerable burden to him for so long before even his patience ran out.
For now though, she’d behave. Try to be less argumentative, push less buttons. Attempt to swallow her pride and try to be a bit more agreeable instead of a pain in his a**. Afterall they were both reluctant participants in this game they’d been forced to play. Unwise to continue punishing him with her disobedience when Reed did not ask for any of this.
“Thank you,” her eyelids felt heavy, and with each languid blink they threatened to remain closed. Sonia shifted beside him into a more comfortable position amongst the mound of pillows and weighted blankets piled atop her legs. “Thank you… for coming.”
Cool fingers against the side of her face, a come hither to blessid darkness and dreamless nights. “For bringing me here…” Fingers combed through her hair and she focused on the sound of his breathing. “For staying…” Sonia spoke upon a whispered exhale then closed her eyes.
Sleep did not come easy at the hospital. Each time she’d nodded off, a nurse would come in asking more questions she hadn’t the energy to answer. To move the bed into another room for xrays or whatever else they needed. Random s**t pushed through the IV to which she didn’t know the name. Only that something had dulled the pain while another made her feel light headed and body feel uncomfortably warm.
But at least Sonia could pull comfort from the silence and the knowledge she wasn’t alone. “Thank you…” A long pause as unconsciousness wrapped long fingers around her ankles, held her in place among the dark waves. “Thank you…”for taking care of me.
