We knew every alley, every back road. The two of us moved quickly through every one of them, moving as fast as we could to get to father. I tried not to look out of the alleys, where our neighbors and friends were either hiding, crouched in the corner, or having the life sucked out of their purely innocent necks. Finally we made it. But the house was done for. It layed in ruins, nothing but a stack of blackened bricks and cracked concrete. Father was gone. I crouched down to the ground and felt the soot and ashes that were once our kitchen, our bedrooms, our home. I wanted to cry. I wanted to shoot an arrow at fate and watch it crumble into the ground, along with everything it had taken from us. I stood and looked at Dusk. I hugged her hard.

I returned the hug, as I tried to keep myself from crying. I wanted..no i needed to be strong for Dawn. "We can't stay here for too long, Dawn," I spoke softly

I looked down at my hand, where I had scribbled the adress Nathaniel told us to go to. "I should have been there," I said, staring at the house. "I should have been with him, I should have burned," We made our way to the house Nathaniel demanded us to find refuge in. The whole time I daydreamed about if we had been with him. Would he still have died? Could we have saved him? And the worst question, Was there a reason he had burned without us? That moment in time, I felt as if the weight of our side of the city was crushing my sister and I. Would I rather die with him, than go through a life without him?

Al Stood in the door way of the safe haven she had come to love, she was on the look out of a pair of twin girls who would be living with them. As her eyes scanned the empty streets and alleys surrounding the house she spotted them. They looked cold and upset, and in great need of some love. "Girls!" she called sweetly. She ran to their side on long quick legs. Her small delicate slipper-ed feet left light foot prints in the dusting of snow that covered the ground.
"Girl's quickly you must get inside." She knew that they would not know who she was, She barely knew who they were apart fro their names and histories she did not know them at all. "Come on now." she took each of their wrists on her icy cold hands and pulled them gently onto the short staircase leading into the house.
Al Was wearing all pastels today and she had her hair pinned up in two great crazy pigtails. She wore a light scarf merely as an assessory, she could be outside in nothing but a bikini in freezing weather and feel nothing, but she had a love for fashion almost as strong as her love for others.

As we stepped mournfully up the icy road, my thoughts could not help but edge their way into memories of father, but as soon as I saw the woman in the doorway of an entirely new safehouse, things began to make a turn. I had never seen her before, and Dusk looked as if she had not either, but the woman had a look on her face as if we were her own daughters. She took us inside. I wasn't sure whether I should love or hate her. She was so kind, and her friendliness was overwhelming, but the city was under attack and our only relative besides eachother was a dusty cloud of ashes hovering throughout the streets. Inside, the house smelled of roses and loaves of fresh bananna bread.

Al closed the door tightly and locked it with a key she wore around her neck on a red leather thong. She turned on her heel to face the girls they did not look to upset, and she hoped they would be happy here. She smiled warmly and tilted her head slightly. "Your Dawn and Dusk, right?" she asked her voice full of warmth. Just then she could smell that her banana loves were done. She bowed slightly and ran from the room.
“Sorry girls! The bread is done!” She bolted down the stairs into the kitchens. As she opened the oven door steam poured out of the hot ovens and she snatched the pans out with her bare hands and dumped the loves out on a waiting tea towel on the counter. The loves were about the size of a mango and had a light sprinkling of nuts covering their tops. She smiled and placed the up right before closing the oven doors with her foot.
“Girls!” she called while she took a wooded serving dish from the cabinet. “Would you like some thing to eat?” Her voice carried threw out the house and she plated up four of the small loves and balanced a picture of milk in one had. She walked back upstairs and grinned when she saw the girls were still ok. She placed the food on the coffee table and lead the girls to sit on a love seat next to it.

Neither of us knew who this woman was, but she was definitely a character. She sat us down, but all I wanted was to be on my feet, protecting the city. Father always said that our side of the city was a side of scholars and high class folk when put in comparison to the other side. The love seat was warm and cushiony, as if it were used by thousands of people before us. Dusk said nothing, I think she was flustered and could not really grasp the situation at hand, what with all the chaos. Sometimes I think the world stops in our eyes, and all we can do is wait for ourselves to react. "So, what is this place? Who are you?" I had to know.

Al took a seat on a cushion across the small table from them. She looked up the girl and sighed. She poured two glasses of milk as she started. “My name is Alexia Brooms, Please feel free to call me Al, I am eighteen years only and of the vampire lifestyle. I will be fifty-eight next Saturday, and I am the house keeper here.“ She laughed. “But I will also be serving as your nurse slash mother while you live with us.” She rolled her shoulders, stretching them as she started her next explanation.
“This is Nathaniel’s safe house it is here to protect you and everyone who needs protecting. It is a safe haven and my permanent home. I have worked here for almost fifty years and the entire time no one who resided in this house had any harm come to them.“ She leaned forward slightly and placed her hands on the floor beside her. “Nathanial and I are very close we see things very much the same when it comes to who needs a helping hand, I am second in command, well first when it comes to most of the practical things, the entire house is furnished and decorated by me. “ she nodded knowingly. “Nathaniel is out at the moment but he should be back very soon.”

The safehouse. The first place must have been Nathaniel's home, which scared me a bit. Were we here because that place may not make it? Our only possesions were there, leaving us as nothing more than homeless orphans with no visible past, present...or future. I remembered the savings envolope in my bag. I tried not to remember how much was in those two luggage bags of our's. "Ma'am," I swallowed, "Where is Nathaniel, is he looking for us? Is he fighting? Where is he?" Why did I care? For some reason I needed to know where the mysterious man with the clear blue eyes and the deep black hair was. I needed to care. He was all we had left.

Al thought a moment and put a finger to her mouth. "Nathaniel does not tell me were he goes I am not his lover or his mother so he thinks that I am not in charge of him and should not worry over his affairs.” she scoffed. "He thinks that if I don't know were he is I won't worry about his safety." she stood and started to flutter about the room dusting and straitening looking back at the girls every few seconds. "Why have you seen him of late?" She asked as she picked up a vase full of fresh roses and dusted under it. The room was already spotless but she worried over Nathaniel he was so kind that anything could happen to him.

"Seen of him?" Obviously this woman knew nothing of what we were going through, or where we had been in the last few hours. "We were living at his house for about a day, but just when we got settled in the city was raided," I looked away, wishing Dusk would pick up, but she seemed shocked out of existance, holding my hand, "Our father died today, his house was burned down," I was certain now that my sister's tears were trickling down my arm, but I tried to help her hide it. The two of us had never been fed well, considering our father's continual issues, so we fit well on the small love seat, as small as it already was. I decided now was the time to let this woman know who we were. "Our mother dissapeared when we were young, father believed she was having an affair with someone on the other side of the city, but after she left he lost control of himself with dirinking, etc." I did not wish to say anymore. But remembering that helped me to realize father did not die in the fire. He died the day mother walked out.

I glanced from Al, then back to Dawn. "Excuse me." I spoke quietly, as I stood and walked outside. I looked out at the city, watching it begin to calm down. "I wonder where Nathaniel is..." I looked back to make sure that neither of them followed me, or had any plans to do so. For all they knew, I just needed some fresh air and wanted to be alone. I began to walk down the streets, turning here and there. Sooner or later I had went down so many different paths that I soon forgot which street I was on, and the address that Nathaniel had given us to go to.
I rushed out of the safe house, hoping that the two girls had found their way to the secondary house. With the streets, partially cleared out I easily made my way there. I unlocked the door, and stepped into the warmth. "Anyone here?" My question was soon answered when I came about Al and Dawn. Something wasn't right though. "Where's Dusk?"

My eyes searched him. I had hoped he might come back with her, that the two had met up and walked here together or something. It had been hours since she left the room, leaving Al and I thinking she had left for a short stroll around the house. But when I looked outside for her, she was not there. She was gone. In the city. During the raid. "Nathaniel," I said exasperatedly, "tell me you know where she is, please, please let me know," I could tell he didn't, so I made my way to the door to look for the last person I had left in the cruel world.
