"Let's go to the liquor vendor's I meant to visit," he suggested, "they may have some interesting bartending equipment he could really appreciate! It's a really...extravagant place, but Maxwell likes it a lot, and who knows what we might find?"
"...And while we're on our way," he added, embarrassed that he hadn't offered before, "might I have the honour of carrying your bags for you?"

Her ears swiveled forwards and back at Julien's words, betraying her uncertainty. Was there anything there that Maxwell would want - that she could afford without selling off her first-born generation? Amara took in a deep breath and pursed her lips together. She wouldn't know if she didn't try! "Okay!" she agreed, giving an encouraging smile. "Lead the way!"
She was prepared to move onwards, but the next question made her pause, giving the rabbit a rather perplexed expression. The Spiraffe looked between the Hotot and her bag before realizing what he meant, her cheeks coloring a little. "Oh Julien, you don't have to," she replied, touched by the offer all the same. "It's really light, but...if you want to..." Amara extended her arms, fingers loosely holding the bag with a shy smile. "You're a darling."

"Oh -" he couldn't help turning pink at her words as he lifted the bag over, "not at all, it's entirely my pleasure." Ducking his head shyly, he sprung ahead to navigate through the crowds.
As they finally escaped the throngs into the luxurious shoppe he'd stood in just that morning, however, all his embarrassment was forgotten at the first glimpse of a price tag. "Wow - um. We could look around..." He had never really bothered to figure out just how exorbitant the store was before - he preferred to leave the futile coveting to Maxwell. At least he was assured in the knowledge that there were enough notes tucked away in his wallet to cover the double-headed bottle sitting demurely on the shelf - but any more than that, he couldn't say...

The Spiraffe simply smiled and followed after the modest Hyte, nimbly picking through the throngs and keeping the white-earred male in sight.
Entering the shop, Amara already felt somewhat out of place. Everything was so extravagant! The very displays oozed with luxury, giving the impression of a lush and plentiful supply of whatever was desired, if one's pockets were as plentiful, that is. She stopped by one of the bottles, looking to the tag; her eyes grew wide, lips slightly parted. "Maxwell certainly has good taste," she chuckled softly, looking over the rest of the items on sale but not daring to touch. Even with human hands, she was afraid to handle the coveted items.
"Wow," she echoed Julien's exclamation, coming to his side with a wide grin. "It's really something! Though, I don't know how...how productive it will be," she admitted after a moment, ears flickering back with mild embarrassment, "I can only about cover half of most of these liquors. If I'd known, I would have squirreled a little more away--!" Amara bit her lip, looking around the shop. Maybe she could come back...she wasn't sure she'd see Maxwell right away, after all, and late was better than never, right?

Oh no! He hadn't - he didn't mean... Her discomfort sparked a deep mortification in him - he should have realised that a shop like this would hardly have Christmas baubles affordable for anyone who wasn't a casual millionaire, and it was all his fault. On one side the hundred and fifty dollar double-heads sparkled mockingly on the shelf, on the other were Amara's flickering twin ears. As his distraught gaze traversed between the two, the solution slowly dawned on him like the amber liquid flowing through the bottle: "Of course...why didn't I think of that earlier!" His bunny ears shot straight up in excitement as he quite forgot himself and seized the spiraffe's human fingers in his snowy paws, "I came here to get that Milagro Romance for Maxwell, but he won't care much for it coming from me - you're going to give it to him instead!"

Curved ears flicked backwards into the tangled locks before slowly, hesitantly lifting upright. Had she just heard Julien correctly...? "You want me to..." Amara licked her lips, slender brows furrowed over her beige eyes, giving her a look somewhere between politely confused and mildly amused. "...give Maxwell liquor...for you? From me?" The Spiraffe couldn't help but quirk a gentle smile, squeezing the paws she held gently. "You two have a very complex relationship, Julien. And I thought his and mine was odd enough!"
Straightening a little, hands at ease and pliant in the softer grasp of pristine paws, Amara inclined her head and gave the Hotot her most encouraging smile. "Tell me what you need me to do!"

"W-well," he flushed and smiled awkwardly, "you know Maxwell, he's such a pain that nothing to do with him is ever simple. E-except for this, that is!" He broke the hold, reaching out for the bottle excitedly, "Just give me a sec to make the purchase and we'll have one perfect bottle of liquor all ready for you to give him!" He trotted over to the cashier, feeling unreasonably pleased with his ingenious scheme. They would be back at HyTech in time for dinner, and Maxwell would get his surprise on Christmas day and never be any the wiser!

It was conveniently Christmas day. When he heard the soft clopping of hooves - light and two-footed, he carefully positioned himself under the dangling mistletoe in the doorway. "Hmm," he murmured to apparently no one in particular; the same no one he had a pretty little present ready for. Casualness was stealthy work.

On cue, the slender Spiraffe clicked her way through the building, turning her warm eyes to and fro in search of a certain dark-furred feline on the auspicious day. Not that he was easy to miss, but Amara was excited, one arm held protectively around the oblong box with her opposite hand gripping the top of it; excited or not, that box was going no where without her permission.
When she did spot Maxwell, her ears lifted to stand upright, her whole face brightening despite the scarf that hid part of her chin and curved by her cheeks, the rich red contrasted by the lighter curls of her hair. "Maxwell~!" she greeted the jaguar in her standard shy but sing-song manner, practically skipping to him - which in and of itself was no small feat. "Just the man I was looking for!" Oblivious of the danger above, she stopped in the doorway next to him, smiling cheekily at her rosette-dappled friend as she finally relinquished her prize, holding the box out to him between slender fingers. "Merry Christmas, Maxwell," she commented with a rosy hue to her cheeks.

He had to grin wryly at her innocent miss of the floating sprig, and laughed as she thrust out the box. " Really? For me?" He plucked the case out of her delicate hands, gave up with a genteel kiss on her fingers and swapped in his own little present to her. " Thank you kindly - merry Christmas yourself! Why don't you open yours? Ladies first."

Amara couldn't help but playfully roll her eyes and give the jaguar a pointed smile, the likes of which dimpled her cheeks. "I don't see any other handsome fellas named 'Maxwell' around here," she countered with a soft laugh. "Of course it's for--!" The Spiraffe swallowed her words with surprise at the chaste kiss and the swift exchange of a gift into her own slender fingers, her ears tucking against her hair in an old shy gesture, her chin lowering slightly so that she looked at the other through her lashes. "...you're horrible, such turnabout is unfair," she teased him lightly, her tone of voice rather humbled.
Using her thumbs to push open the top of the box, her expression first bloomed into surprise, softening into awe and settling on a wistful, affectionate upturn of her brows. "Oh Maxwell," she breathed fondly, drawing her index finger over the sunset pendant. "It's...it's perfect. Thank you." Turning her eyes back to him, she smiled warmly, carefully clutching the box to her chest. "I'll put it on after you open yours. I don't want to miss this!"

Maxwell countered rather belatedly "I wasn't expecting you to give me a present little miss, but -" He paused at her delightful turn of expression and soft astonishment, taken in - though self aware of the fact - by her naive charm. A brief, helpless smile touched his lips, and he received her thanks gracefully after. "I'm glad, and you're very welcome."
"Blackmail, eh?" He returned to a laugh, "the more excited you are about me opening it the more unseemly my reaction is going to be -" his claws picked the edges of the box up, quickly prying it off...
...to see a Milagro Romance, its tequila sloshing in its double-necked bottle. There was a silence, and when he realised his jaw was slack and eyes wide, he quickly composed himself.
"Wow." He said, for the lack of a better word. "Thank you Amara - that's amazing. And expensive, I'm afraid. Thank you muchly." His paw slid across her hand lightly, and gave it a little squeeze. "I would ask how you knew -" he raised his head, gold eyes glittering with clear revelation, "- perhaps a little...birdie told you?"

The Spiraffe watched with keen interest and was not at all disappointed. The jaguar's expression almost surprised her, to be honest, so open and clearly as surprised as she, if not more so. It was a gift that he'd wanted, Julien had said as much, so to be so caught off guard was a pleasant sort of reaction, in her book! Smiling winningly, her fingers curled over the soft fur of his rosette paws. "Tis the season," she responded softly, bowing her head. Maxwell's response to her was all the gift she would have needed.
The inquiry made Amara laugh, giving a brief glance around as though to look for her co-conspirator. It was only then that she caught sight of the mistletoe, but true to form, she did little more than ignore the pink that flit over her cheeks before responding. "Of the fuzzy-earred variety, yes, she easily admits, her voice hushed as she leans in, "he didn't want me to say but I knew you'd know better." The simple fact of the matter was that she didn't get to spend enough time with Maxwell to know his heart's desires. Such was the perks, however, of running into the one that did. "It's from both of us, but I didn't tell you that." She smiles again, gentler, hoping Maxwell wouldn't mind the joint effort.

" Fuzzy-eared birdies are easy," he murmured, nudging her pert ears with his cheek. " And I'm sorry you spent so much, still." He paused, gazed down at the lovely lady and decisively placed a quick kiss on her forehead. " Well - let's not waste his efforts and yours, let's break it out for a drink!" * * * * * * * It was late, but the telltale taps and the glow below the door signalled that the bunny was still awake. Very good. He would be nice this time, and knock. " Hey," Maxwell said, rapping on the door sharply. " It's me. I'm coming in."
