The tension broke as the first egg cracked, then returned in double as the young bronze tumbled onto the Sands. A bronze first! A clear expectation for the large egg, to be sure, but an excellent sign for the Hatching! Even if his arrival had been less than elegant. Ceanandin's eyes locked onto the little hissing creature, and his nerves over the Hatching quickly gave way to a pang of concern for the dragonet. They were so fragile, newly hatched, a wing could be injured or--but no, he seemed unharmed.
He had quite forgotten about the other Candidates. True, there were several half-obscuring his view of the clutch, but his focus now was entirely on eggs. His competition was no longer his concern; the dragonets would choose who they will, and he could only will, and hope, and pray that that might be him. A Hatching was no time to be generous. His eyes fixed firmly on the little bronze, as they would each dragonet to come once this lovely boy made his choice. The rocking eggs were of no interest to him at the moment.

Somehow amid the confusion and the uproar from Marko, Vera's eyes caught on the bronze, and held. That was a good omen. A very good omen. She watched the hatchling emerge from his shell, and started to laugh over his antics. Oh, that was adorable. Unfortunately, the laughter very swiftly turned into another coughing fit, and she had to look away. Shardit! She wanted to see who Impressed the beautiful bronze. Blinking, she realized that her teachers were raising a bit of a fuss. "Marko," she croaked, coughing again to clear her throat. "What in Faranth's name do you think that you are doing?" Ridiculous man. Absolutely ridiculous.

"I am going down there to get my SHARDING apprentice off the SHARDING Sands, and there's nothing that's going to stop me," Marko snapped, looking over his shoulder at Xeran. "She is going to get herself killed down there! Who even let her on the Sands? She's going to get killed!" he added as an afterthought and shook his head. "I have to stop her before something horrible happens to her."
Sharditall, whether or not she was technically HIS Apprentice, Hayara was Marko's wing...man and she was his friend and he had a major responsibility to her and she was, well...kind of like a daughter to him. So was this all misplaced paternal emotion? Quite probably. BUT THAT DIDN'T MATTER RIGHT NOW. WHAT MATTERED WAS GETTING HER OFF THE FARDLING SANDS.

It was unusual for the Nose not to be patrolling the dining hall for any last minute bits of gossip. It was even more unusual that she wasn't in the kitchens, helping clean up in exchange for little tidbits of information. In fact, she wasn't even in the general vicinity of the dining hall at all, perhaps a sign of the apocalypse.
Nandeli had taken refuge in a lesser used corridor of the Lower Caverns, enjoying the coolness the shadows offered her. Apparently even she had limits to her seemingly boundless energy, and was taking a small cat nap up against one of the walls. The fatigue had been a reoccurring thing for the last several days, though she had merely assumed that meeting all these Candidates had taken its toll on her. She most certainly had never had to remember this many people before. It was that, or the fact that she was currently bunking with Okassis and S'van. Either seemed quite likely.
Her little nap was interrupted by a very familiar humming reverberating through the halls. What? The Hatching? Now?! Shards and she wasn't even ready! Nandeli scrambled to her feet and instantly regretted the motion. A wave of dizziness made her stop, however it cleared as quickly as it had come. Perhaps she had stood up to fast. It happened to the best of people. Remembering her mission, Nandeli took off to her original quarters, snagging her hair tie and candidate robes as she went along. Time to join the seemingly endless stream of Candidates making their way into the Hatching Sands!
It felt hotter than normal on the Sands, and Nandeli idly wiped her face with the sleeve of her candidate robe. She was just nervous, she assured herself as she tried to stand a little taller to see. It had been a long day and she was just feeling the affects. The excitement of the Hatching would make things better soon. Shaking her head to clear it – though it did little good – she managed a bright smile and a wave for Okassis as she passed by him to take her place. She hoped his luck would improve for this Hatching.

With a yawn Veyes was pulled out of his dreaming...and to the waking world. He had heard a noise...then a rumble...and suddenly he had realized what had happened! THE HATCHING!!! Upon realization, Veyes burst upward from his cot and leapt to his feet! "Finally!" He was going to be freed from latrine duty!
It wasn't long before he ran to his small alcove and changed hastily into his white robes then rushed towards the hatching grounds. He wasn't going to be late to this event no matter what happened especially when the eggs could crack open quickly. If anything he wished he could be early. Walking briskly, he caught up with other candidates who were also making their way to the hatching ground. It caused everything to slow a bit, however, soon his feet were feeling the gritty hot sands between his toes. Today, that feeling wouldn't bother him because even if he didn't impress, he'd be elated to be back to a normal chore schedule. Once he reached the group of candidates that were already on the sands he moved further to the side to have a better view. There he stopped and took a slow deep breath letting the air settle in his lungs before letting it out. He wasn't about to let himself think about what he would do after the hatching. His heart was pounding too hard to let him think straight. Maybe he'd just go back to his alcove and practice stitching the leather he bought...or maybe he'd at least go to the dining hall to get a bit to eat to sooth his growling tummy...or maybe just maybe one of his friends might find their lifemate on the sands. How he hoped that one of them would be that lucky! As his feet dug a hole in the sands, his mind wandered as he watched the eggs rocking. In his own mind, he was taking bets on what he guessed was in the eggs. His dreams again envisioning very earthy dragons to go with the shells, however, a small grin crossed his lips as he knew that at least one of them might be a little rebel. On his fingers he counted the eggs. Well, he knew that one, the gold was going to go to a girl so that left the others.
He realized at that instance he had barely made the first egg hatching....a bronze from one of the big eggs. He knew it! Well at least his personal betting guessed that way. Of course he could only imagine that the other big one was a bronze as well. He sighed a little wistfully as he thought of the future. Hoping that the person who impressed that one was worthy to lead in the future...

Jessan's breath hitched as bronze broke out and stumbled across the sands. It bumped into another egg and it began to wriggling as well. A bronze! A good omen at any Hatching. Trying to remember to breathe, Jessan looked around and saw Kiriwar. Did he manage to lose Notos and Jiriar? There were a lot of Candidates, the stands were crowded and he was touching shoulders with someone he wasn't familiar with...
"Who will you go to, little one?"

Prior to this Hatching, Elae had always been an excited little bundle of barely contained energy! But now… now, she was feeling downright lethargic. Whatever energy she had gleaned from her short nap earlier had flown away from her, leaving behind only exhaustion. Clearly, all of these late nights were finally wearing the girl down. Or maybe it was all of the work. Yeah, that was probably it.
Oh! There was Raena! Elae shuffled over to her old friend, giving her a wane smile. Talking was ‘discouraged’, of course, which basically meant no Candidate wanted to talk. There was always the risk that it might attract Z’nal’s attention. Hopefully he wouldn’t mind the coughing, though. Mm. Drink of water. That would have been nice before rushing off to the Hatching.
At least a Bronze had hatched first! That was a good omen, although it didn’t feel like a good one to Elae right now. She wiped a hand across her eyes, trying to get rid of some of the fatigue… ohwait. There was Nan! Bustling through the other Candidates, Elae made her way to Nan’s side with a wan smile.

T'ka rubbed her temple with a forefinger and thumb, sighing even as she took huge strides in an effort to get to the hatching in a timely fashion. "Kyllae's probably the only one I know. I don't know very many people here, really," which wasn't a lie. It wasn't completely her fault, since not many wanted to be around Haanyath, or her rider, but it didn't help that T'ka leaned towards the anti-social side. Oh well. She didn't need lots of friends. Just a few good ones.
She hurriedly wormed her way through the crowds, trying to keep a path open for Kallista to follow as well. She eventually found a few empty seats, which she hurriedly plopped into. Good. She didn't feel like running about right now, especially not after having just woken up. She spotted Haanyath a ways away, and couldn't help but smile. She didn't look too happy, being so closely nestled to a group of other greens. Poor dear.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Oh, Kyllae was so excited, her head was hurting a little! Was that normal? Oh well, maybe it was just stage fright...but that wasn't right either. She wasn't the type to be embarassed. Especially about something so simple as just standing here. She coughed once or twice quietly into her hand. Shardit, now was no time to start feeling unwell! But it was probably nothing, maybe she was just a little off from being tired. That was it. She did have a busy day. Were it not for the hatching, she would be quite fast asleep.
She coughed once more, trying to make it as discreet as possible. Imagine how silly she would look getting sick right out here on the sands! No, this was nothing. Just a little bother. She was tired, exhausted, but she wouldn't let it get in her way. She was Kyllae, it would take a little more than a mild headache to get in her way!
An easy glance around let Uroru spot his room mate, Zhaylan. He dipped his head to him, offering the other a bit of a good luck salute before returning his dark honey eyes to the hissing Adder dragonet.
He had bet himself that at least one of the adder eggs would be a bronze. Of course with an egg that large it was either a Bronze, or a rather large Brown. Maybe its Death Adder sibling would prove to be a Brown. It would be incredible if both proved to be Bronzes, but only time would tell. Uroru was betting that this night would be an interesting one at the least, what with a Bronze hatching first. What a good omen for what was to come.
Hayara frowned. She knew Marko would be rather upset with her. She did expect a lecture once the hatching (and hopefully the feast) were all said and done with. And Hayara was also aware Marko might abandon her as his apprentice...but what in Farnath's name was he doing? The towering harper was already in Xeran's arms? A good start, but she never thought that he was so forward. Of course, maybe he just tripped and-
He was yelling something. Tipping her head, Hayara tried to catch wind of whatever he friend was yelling when she realized an egg was hatching...and egg was hatching! And, however ridiculous her Marko might be, this egg was entirely more important than he was. And the hatchling as a bronze, nonetheless! Of course, not for her, but a very good omen! A good omen indeed! Smile wide on her face, Hayara flashed Marko her best grin before setting eyes back on the baby bronze dragon.
Jessmet bounced on her toes, both because of the heat and because otherwise she couldn't see. From the appreciative gasps around her and a brief flash of colored hide she gathered that a bronze had been first to hatch. By all accounts, a good sign.
Giving up on being able to see the dragonet for the moment Jessmet peered into the crowd. Kiriwar and Okassis' taller frames stood out. A commotion in the stands caught her eye-- was that a harper pitching a fit about something? Surely he knew better than that..! Her hand went automatically to the end of her braid, fiddling with it nervously.
Even though she tried to avoid it, Saraket found herself being jostled about in the group of anxious Candidates. Preoccupied with dodging elbows, a sudden spike of noise from the Sands startled her. She momentarily forgot the crowd, and looked out to the eggs, where a Bronze hatchling was hissing and flailing, trying to catch his balance. Stunned, Saraket grew still as dismay welled in her chest. She'd missed seeing him hatch! Shells, she wanted to be able to see this clearly!
Weaving clumsily through the throng of Candidates, she managed to reach the outer fringe of girls. Though standing here put her farther from the eggs, she had a clear view. Hands held close to her chest, as if to keep her heart from bursting out, she watched to see which boy the Bronze would choose.
The bronze dragonet shook his tail a little, hissing again as if scolding the other egg for being there before turning his attention towards the group of Candidates, his green eyes whirling curiously, looking over the crowd. Stumbling forward a little, he eyed the males, his eyes whirling as he thought about them, and his eyes came to rest on Okassis, peering at him as the boy was clearly peering at him. He then snorted, arching his back a little and raising his wings experimentally, turning a little to look up at the people in the stands before looking back towards the males
Obviously this bronze wanted to take his time.
As the first-born dragonet took his time, a second egg began to quiver a little, a large shard of the coral snake egg breaking off and coming to rest a few feet away from the Candidates, the rest of the shell starting to crumble in tiny pieces. A striped blue sat curled by the rest of the eggs, his eyes whirling a little in confusion and distress for a moment before he stumbled up, silently staring at the Candidates, taking a few stumbling steps back and ultimately tripping over his own tail, hissing and spitting a little in surprise, the bronze turning to give the other dragonet a look.
The striped blue didn't seem to want the attention that the bronze did, and yet, ultimately, had drawn it to himself anyway.
A loud crack shattered the uncomfortable silence that had covered the sands, spilling forth a bronze from one of the larger eggs. Ah, what a good start to the night! Jaidev wasn't surprised at all- such a big egg had to have housed a bronze! Oh, and what a personality this one had- he'd certainly be an interesting one, he would- he hoped that his bonded either had patience to deal with such an attitude or one to match! As he watched the ambling dragonet eye their group, it made him wonder about its partner that it had inadvertently knocked into. Would they be lucky enough to have another bronze? Or would they be graced with a brown? Those were his guesses for the time being.
Though he knew their was no hope of him Impressing a bronze, he was still terribly curious as to where the new, wandering dragonet would go, who it would choose... The tan-skinned boy stifled a yawn, smiling wanly. Already he felt a little better...
And it only got better as the next egg began to wiggle and hatch. The Coral egg burst apart next, exposing a shy and clumsy little blue to the group. He felt his heart begin to beat again. Blue...that was more his color! Though...the poor little thing seemed rather distressed. He felt bad- he knew how daunting crowds could be. It took him four Standings to have how he felt on the inside even come remotely close to the composure and nonchalance he projected on the outside...and he still felt rather squirmy on the inside- moreso now that he was waking up more. He smiled at the dragonet kindly- he meant what he had thought at the Touching. Hopefully, it would find someone to help make it feel unafraid, or someone to hide with.
In a way, it reminded him of the timid little green from the last Hatching...
Veyes watched the bronze patiently waiting for the little guy to make his move but had to avert his eyes for just a moment. Something about the sands...maybe the glare from them it was just a little bright today. Well, ok he had to just be nervous...that was all even though he felt like he had a mild headache. Rubbing his hand over his forehead he tried to block the glare just a bit.
Probably just a bit of a hunger headache, he thought to himself as he realized he didn't eat that much for dinner. Well, he hadn't been that hungry...but he didn't realize the hatching would be tonight either. Great, maybe he should got to the celebration afterwards. It'd be better than starving...right?
The distraction made him just a bit irritable and he shoved the thought to the side focusing once again on the eggs. He was still hopeful...very hopeful. He'd get to see the dragons hatch...his friends would be free of latrine duty...Yes...Things were already getting better!
