Poor Nyome... that must be terrible. x_x Do you know of any program other than Painter that can open RIFF files? (My PSP7 can open up PSD files...) You could use that to check and see if your layers were permanently deleted.

On another technical note: My Photoshop is screwing up again. >_< I installed it on my dad's computer, and for some reason the layer palette won't work at all. It doesn't display the layers at all, making it impossible for me to change layers. Restarting Photoshop doesn't help.
