"Thanks again, Sensei. I figured it had somethign to do with the title of the Okiyaa, but I'm so forgetful about kanji sometimes. Domo Arigato"

Miharu smiled at her teacher's quick answer for her questions.

Makoto rised her hand again.

"Sensei? Do the other okiya's have names like this as well?"

((OOC: What do these questions have to do with our lesson??? xp ))

Sayuri nodded solemnly. "The Japanese do not name something merely for show. Each name has a meaning, you see. The five okiya in our district are named after flowers and different elements. The Hinohasu's element is fire and its flower is the lotus blossom, as I have said before.
The Tsuchinobara Okiya's element is earth and its flower is the rose. The Kazenotanpopo Okiya has the element of wind and its flower is the dandelion. The Kanenokikyou Okiya is named after the element of metal and the flower called the Chinese Bellflower. The Mizunoyuri Okiya is, of course, of the water element and its flower is the lily. So, you see, each okiya has its own name and element to separate it from the other okiya."

((Woah, the class jumped a page while I've been gone. sweatdrop ))

Kikaru wrote down notes from the sensei's lesson along with the questions some of the other maiko had, and the answers the sensei gave. She had a question, hoping it would not sound like a silly one.

"Sensei, since the appearance of female Geisha, have many male entertainers appeared?"

It was probably not the best way to word this question, but she couldn't think of a better way at the moment. She paused in her note writing, to listen to the sensei's answer.

((Sorry sweatdrop ))

Makoto read over her notes, once twice, three times even seeing if she could find the answer before raising her hand.

"Sensei? What would be a reason that a geisha would want to run away, and if they did, why the fuss to bring them back?"

"If you are speaking of male geisha, then I am afraid that they are quite the rare sight. Male geisha were entertainers, yes, but their style was more jester-like and they weren't often heard of."

"Most geisha were sold to their okiya from families who couldn't afford the amount of children they had, whose parents were going to die, or even because the families wanted sons and not daughters. So, the little girls would try and run away from the okiya to find their families again. Most of the time, it wouldn't work because the geisha districts used specific languages, so that if a girl did run away...then she could easily be traced back to her district.
"It was always important to bring them back, because the okiya paid a rather handsome price for the little girls. It's the same with American slavery. Why did the slave owners want their slaves back? Without their slaves, they weren't getting their money's worth."

Makoto's eyes widened and she nodded quickly scribbling down in her book.

"Thank you Sensei."

Mitsuka continued to scribble down notes while taking peeks at the other girls in the room. They all reacted to the teacher as if they had practice this for years. When on blushed, so did the others, when one was suprised, the others let out an equally suprised gasp. It was defintly a site to behold.

Iyasu continued on with her notes as Sayuri-san answered questions. When the question came up about little girls being sold into the life of geisha, it chimed a question in the young girl's head. Gently, the maiko put her pen down and raised her hand up.

"Sayuri-sensei? May I ask a question?" She asked almost in a wavy tone.

Miharu took down what the teacher had said about young girls and the different dialects, and the male geishas being more jester-like. She perked her head up at Iyasu's voice.

Makoto rised her hand once again:

"Sensei is it true that when there were Geiko, did they look and dress as Geisha do, and did the also preform on stage? I heard that they would use feminie looking men."

"Geiko is merely the term for geisha in kyoto hanamachi, whereas the geisha is used more for Tokyo geiko."

She took in a breath and exhaled slowly. The subject that she was about to bring, was the very thing she did. "Sensei, what about girls who decided to leave their families for this life of a geisha? Has this phenomon occured only in recent events?"

"Oh I see. I am sorry for the confusion."

Makoto bowed her head lowly.
