I've had this problem a while ago when i was experimenting with Slackware. I used a partition to boot a Slackware DVD and after slack finished installing I rebooted my computer and I could actually hear my computer processing everything in a high pitched audible beep.
Then I did the Same thing with an openSUSE 11.0 DVD and the processor wasn't getting raped, but it hung while shutting down the computer.
Now, I have been running on Kubuntu 8.10 ((((OMG MY SWAP JUST STARTED WORKING!!!!! THANX SYSTEM MONITER, FOR TELLING ME!... )))) and everything was running fine untill i tried the same partition live cd with Ubuntu 8.10, I just can't stay away from Gnome, and it did the same thing just up untill i just told you it started working. I'm just wondering is it possibly an internal thing or and OS thing?
edit: ok so I rebooted my system and its still beeping and the swap is not in use again... movies run blotchy and its unbearable.... but that my computer for you
