Hamlett out as Chicago Fire coach

CHICAGO (AP)—Coach Denis Hamlett was fired by the Chicago Fire on Tuesday after leading them to the Major League Soccer semifinals in each of his two seasons.

Fire technical director Frank Klopas said it “has decided to take the team in a new direction in 2010.”

Hamlett’s contract expires at the end of the year, and the team said he planned to pursue other coaching opportunities.

Hamlett joined the staff as an assistant in 1998 and was promoted to coach 10 years later.

Uner him, the Fire reached consecutive conference finals and this year’s SuperLiga final.
