This is the new series that Kelley Armstrong is writing that had an excerpt in the Reckoning. The first book is called the Gathering and I think is about vampires. Instead of Project Genesis it is Project Phoenix. There is more information about it at chloesaunders.com

Maya is deffinately a shapeshifter. read through the story more carefully and you'll see what i mean (my friend realized it before me tho -_-)
Kelley Armstrongs short stories about KAT (and names kat) are about vampires.
