Quote:
1. The Gargoyles: Even when you thought you’d seen the last of them, it seems like you’re never really in the clear. A while back, there was an infestation of awful gargoyle creatures–and while every Star Festival had its fair share of oddities, this one seems to have introduced a permanent infestation upon the city. Maybe you see them perched on the roof, or hiding in the shadows, but not all of these grotesque creatures are satisfied with just escaping their interdimensional prison–some of them still have a bone to pick. They seem stony; some of them will watch with a penetrative gaze and never strike to attack, but some of them will dive down to target anyone who gets too close. The monsters come in an array of sizes and shapes, but they are no more than half the size of their target. Their goal is uncertain, but they will crumble into a pile of rocks and dust if struck hard enough.

Achird still felt... lost. And stupid. Very, very stupid. It wasn't a new feeling; very familiar, in fact, but it didn't stop hurting just because it had been felt before. He'd just... thought he'd be doing better. But his old life haunted him with every step, doggedly behind him at every turn to whisper in his ears the old insecurities, phrases his parents would say, the expectations from his so-called friends, the guilt at the relief that he'd never have to deal with them alive again. Tonight was especially gloomy. Slightly foggy with a drizzle that at least felt cool against his skin, even if he would prefer it didn't do that at all.

Patrol seemed so bleak. He didn't want to do it, really, especially since it wasn't really clearing his head the way he wanted it to. He sighed heavily, ears perking up slightly when he heard a soft scrape of stone against stone. Maybe with something to investigate, he'd feel better.

He peered upward, squinting against the drizzling rain, and froze when some kind of stone creature shifted slightly. That definitely wasn't in his imagination. At least there was an Order aura nearby? He shivered and hoped they'd come over, because whatever this was, it was really freaking him out.

It was, in fact, coming nearer, but with a weakness to it that might have been disappointing. Would have been disappointing, if the roles were reversed.

It wasn't so much that Maus was on the lookout for those to help or protect. He wasn't. Put bluntly, he wasn't going to be all that much use, unless he could hurl a couple of bricks as he had when teaming up with Saiph against a Youma. He was powered up for the sake of having slightly stronger arms while prowling around where he shouldn't be.

Which was why he heaved an inward sigh when he was opening his mouth to call out to the stranger whose energy signature was lurking around near his, only to at that moment be swooped by something from above. He'd had his ear to the ground. He knew what this was.

"Evening!" he called out, cheerful despite it, crouching down to feel around the ground for something to throw while he kept an eye to the skies. "I won't say good, since I think it's about to be otherwise."

The voice was a relief, even as Achird turned and realized it was a page who had come up. No magic to use yet, obviously, but an extra body was an extra body. Especially one with apparent knowledge of what was about to happen.

He startled, alarmed, when one of the roof's gargoyles flew down by the Page's ear, and then yelled another jumped down and clipped his shoulder, letting out a strange screech.

"It wouldn't have been good even before being attacked," Achird said quite grumpily. "Aubergine Resilience!"

His magic bloomed over the area and Achird relaxed a little as the aubergine flowers brought both their sweet smell and the extra defenses to his skin. The gargoyle in front of him snarled and leaped forward to wail on Achird's leg with its creepy stone hands, but Achird didn't feel very much of it. He reached down, lifted it into the air and, ignoring the way it snarled and screamed and flailed, spun once, twice, and launched it back into the air over the roof it had dropped from.

"I suggest chucking yours," he called out to the page.

Achird speaks the name of his attack, and aubergine flowers bloom in a ten-foot radius around him. Allies within the radius become more durable and resistant to damage, with attacks from his rank being fully deflected and attacks from one rank above him being reduced by half. This magic does not affect attacks from characters stronger than that. These effects last for 30 seconds, and Achird can use this spell three times per battle.

"Not all of us are strapping beefcakes hitting the gym in a way that allows us to hurl rocks and wear a deep V-neck without humiliating ourselves," he answered, the cheerfulness arriving a bit drily. He was not entirely useless, however, demonstrating both a good throwing arm and pretty decent aim with a random large stone picked up off the ground. The resulting gargoyle wail trailed off into a crumbling noise. "It's an additive property, you know."

This was said with a vague gesture at himself, which, to be fair, didn't reveal very much given how covered up he was. But he certainly did not exude an aura of healthy strength, and moved in a way that suggested he was more used to scuttling out of danger in a way reminiscent of - well, a mouse, not that he'd introduced himself yet.

Ugh. Achird did not find that kind of self-deprecation entertaining. He rolled his eyes at the behavior, but at least the page did manage to get rid of the gargoyle. He felt his magic peter out, the flowers dissolving into the rainwater and carrying the smell away with them into the storm drains.

"Hm. Well, at least they're gone," he said grumpily. "It sounded like you knew what they were? Have you encountered them before, then?"

He stretched, arching his back and groaning as his spine popped. "I'm Achird, by the way. Senshi of Aubergines."

He still stood, leery and prepared, hefting a chunk of brick in one hand and scanning the skies for a long few seconds before - and during - his answer, interrupting himself only briefly to get a side eye at the stretch. Things may have changed quite a bit for him during the last several years and especially the last few months, but some things were always going to be kicking around in the old subconscious, and an aesthetic appreciation, if nothing else, was always going to be one of them.

"Maus," he said briefly. And then the words caught up to him, and he turned a skeptical eye on the stranger.

He should really be more polite. He should really be more decent. He should really avoid saying what probably a million people had said before.

He did not do any of these things, instead giving him and his exposed chest a look before letting his arm drop slightly, as if to signal that he wasn't about to turncoat, before abandoning the brick entirely and instead smoothing his mustache with his thumbs, as he was wont to do when looking for words.

"Aubergines?" he asked. "Really?"

Achird's brow furrowed, baffled by Maus's own confusion.

"Yes?" he answered, almost questioning himself. "Why would I lie?"

He didn't understand why Maus might think that. Surely... Well, no, he had met that one "Dark Mirror" Senshi who lied about being the Senshi of Eggplants, which nearly made his lip curl just thinking about. He supposed that yes, then, some Senshi would lie just for the hell of it. How annoying.

"Didn't think you were lying," said Maus, inveterate liar that he was, with a broad and friendly smile. "Just making sure I heard you right. I'll let you know if I run into the Senshi of Peaches one day. Bet they're a real looker."

He was berating himself a bit that he was currently on yet another attempt to kick his smoking habit. Getting Feronia to light up had been extraordinarily funny. This guy probably would have been even funnier.

"Anyway. Absolute pleasure to meet another one of you guys," he said, wiggling his fingers beside his head where ears might be. "At least I assume it's another one of you guys. Call me if you ever need someone to throw rocks while you throw way, way bigger rocks."
