About GU Haseo, the PKK (Player Killer Killer) known as the "Terror of Death," a former member of the disbanded Twilight Brigade guild, is seeking out a PK (Player Killer) named Tri-Edge, a player that happens to resemble Kite, whose victims supposedly are unable to return to The World after he kills them. Haseo's friend, Shino, was attacked eight months prior to the game by Tri-Edge and the player herself, Shino Nanao, was left in a coma. Haseo encounters Tri-Edge and is defeated effortlessly. It is then that Tri-Edge merely Data Drains him, reducing his level from 133 to 1 and leaving him without any items or weapons, but instead with a mystery on his hands as to the nature of the Data Drain and why Tri-Edge is in possession of such a skill.

hack//G.U. is the title of a series of three video games for PlayStation 2. The first title in the series, Vol.1 Rebirth, was released in Japan on May 18, 2006 and will be released in quarter 4 of 2006 for North America. Vol.2 A Voice that Reminds Me of You will follow in September 2006 in Japan and Vol.3 At a Walking Pace will be released in December 2006 in Japan.
The three games will be linked in unison, much like the first .hack series, with one game's story continuing into the other. At one point it was thought that the games would be independant of each other, but recent news has proven this incorrect.
The games take place after the anime series .hack//Roots, currently airing in Japan. .hack//Roots serves as a prequel to the G.U. videogames, in much the same way the anime series .hack//SIGN served as a prequel to the four original .hack games.

can I use .hack//'s first game serie's in GU? * Save data from the first four games and .hack//frägment will unlock two emails; one from BlackRose that was sent to Kite after the battle with Corbenik and another from Hokuto that was meant for Rena but mistakenly sent to Haseo. * Vol.1 will come packaged with a Terminal Disc entitled .hack//G.U. THE END OF "The World". The Terminal Disc will contain summaries of the previous four games and provide an explanation for what happened between the end of .hack//QUARANTINE and the start of Vol.1. There will be more features in the Terminal Disc that can be unlocked via save data from all three G.U. video games.

Charaters ((ya there's a lot)) * Haseo (ハセヲ) - The Terror of Death (Class: Multi-Weapon): The protagonist of the G.U. franchise and a PKK (Player Killer Killer). He is highly skilled and is seeking for the infamous Player Killer Tri-Edge who sent his friend Shino into a coma.
Haseo eventually finds Tri-Edge, but is defeated effortlessly and then Data-Drained, causing him to go from level 133 back to level 1 without any weapons, items, or his upgrades. He is skilled and quick-witted, but prone to lose his temper. It is obvious his personality is far different from that in the Roots anime and now he is Guildmaster of Carnard.
* Atoli (アトリ): The Mirage of Deceit (Class: Harvest) - Seemingly the female lead of the series. Apparently The World is the first net game she has played and she is very friendly and upbeat. She is part of the Lunar Tree Guild and idolises Sakaki. She also appears to be fond of Haseo despite the fact that he only spends time with her because her PC (Player Character) resembles Shino of .hack//Roots.
* Kuhn (クーン): The Propagation (Class: Steam Gunner) - A strong and flirtatious man who wishes for peace in The World. He is a member of "Raven" and part of the project to destroy AIDA such as Tri-Edge. He was once a member of the newbie help guild Carnard, and even now, he is admired by Silabus and Gaspard.
* Yata (八咫): The Prophet (Class: Danse Macabre) - Formerly Naobi, Guildmaster of TaN, he is now the Guildmaster of Raven. Yata is a System-Administrator and in charge of Project GU, a project meant to use Epitaph-Wielders to destroy AIDA within the game.
* Sakubo (朔望): The Machinator (Class: Warlock) - A PC played by two people; Saku, who speaks in Kansai-ben, and Bo; a shy and quiet player. Saku is the older sister and apparently obsessed with Endrance, while Bo, her younger brother, is simple being dragged along.
* Endrance (エンデュランス): The Temptress (Class: Blade) - A player with so much skill and power that he's considered superior even by the greatest players in the World. However, he's extremely cold and only ever shows emotion towards the cat he has on his shoulder. Fans speculate that he and Elk are played by the same person as Endrance has a cat (he constantly refers to it as Mia), they both have the same seiyuu, and Endrance's title is the Temptress.
* Pai (パイ): The Avenger (Class: Grappler) - Previously a member of TaN known as Ender, she encounters Haseo shortly after he's Data-Drained and comments on his strange powers. She is a member of Raven and involved in the project to take down AIDA such as Tri-Edge.
* Ovan (オーヴァン): The Rebirth (Class: Steam Gunner) - The former Guildmaster of the Twilight Brigade (a Guild devoted to finding The Key of the Twilight) and an old friend of Haseo's. He is one of the greatest mysteries of The World and seems to know more than he lets on. His left arm is abnormal and his PC's data is apparently as large as that used for an entire game field. In the latest trailer for volume 2, he is shown being attacked by The Three Azure Knights (Tri-Edge, Balmung, and Orca)
* Tri-Edge (三爪痕)/Kite of the Azure Flame (Class: Twin Swords) - The main antagonist of the series who is famous for sending players into comas after he kills them. He is the Player Killer who put Shino into a coma. He is also called Kite of the Azure Flame and resembles a more hagard version of Kite from the original games and wields a pair of triple-bladed swords. (Now known as "Twin Fangs of the Void".) It is confirmed that Tri-Edge is not an AIDA but, in fact, opposes the AIDA.
* Silabus (シラバス) (Class: Blade) - The Guildmaster of Carnard at the start of the game, he eventually gives power to Haseo. He and Gaspard are the only members of Carnard at the start of GU. He is in awe of former Carnard member Kuhn.
* Gaspard (ガスパー) (Class: Warlock) - A member of Carnard who follows Silabus and assists in helping Newbies. He and Silabus are the only members of Carnard at the start of GU. He is in awe of former Carnard member Kuhn.
* Sakaki (Class: Brandish) - Leader of the 2nd Platoon of Lunar Tree, Sakaki is famous throughout The World and commonly associated with Lunar Tree. He appears to be part of a sinister plot and because of this, tension has grown between him and Keyaki.
* Bordeaux (ボルドー) (Class: Blade) - Bordeaux is an established PK and usually parties with Negimaru and Grein. She is also a member of Kestrel and well respected in the PK community. She was PKKed by Haseo on their first encounter.
* Negimaru (ネギ丸) (Class: Twin Sword) - Negimaru is an established PK and usually parties with Bordeaux and Grein. He is also a member of Kestrel and is treated as some sort of crime-lord. He was PKKed by Haseo on their first encounter.
* Grein (グリン) (Class: Brandish) - Grein is an established PK and usually parties with Bordeaux and Negimaru. He is also a member of Kestrel and generally acts as Bordeaux's bodyguard. He was PKKed by Haseo on their first encounter.
* Keyaki (Class: Flicker) - Keyaki is the Guildmaster of Lunar Tree and the leader of the First Platoon. He has a great rivalry with Sakaki, being the creator of Lunar Tree and yet not being as famous as Sakaki.
* Gabi (Class: Brandish) - Gabi is the Guildmaster of Kestrel and adopts a laissez-faire attitude to running his Guild. Although his Guild is overrun with PKs, he is not a PK himself.
* Piros the 3rd (Class: Partisan) - Piros the 3rd is the same Piros from the original .hack games. He is the Guildmaster of the coincidentally named Project GU (Graphics Umai meaning "Good at Graphics") Guild and works as a Graphics Designer for The World.
* Kaede (Class: Blade) - A member of Lunar Tree and the leader of the 3rd Platoon. Kaede is one of the many supporters of Keyaki in his conflict with Sakaki and is known for her kind and sincere attitude.
* Matsu (Class: Multi-Weapon) - A member of Lunar Tree and the leader of the 7th Platoon. Matsu was once a famous PK but has since grown ashamed of his past and chosen not to fight. He is a supporter of Sakaki.
* Taika (Class: Blade) - The creator and former Guildmaster of Ikoro; a Guild for champions. Taika lost his position when he was defeated by Taihaku and feels Ikoro has grown arrogant. He believes Haseo can pull Ikoro out of this state.
* Yowkow (Class: Twin Sword) - A former member of Ikoro before she was defeated by Endrance. Though she is incapable of seeing Endrance's Avatar, she is adamant that Endrance cheated and has vowed revenge.
* Tenrow (Class: Grappler) - One of the current members of Ikoro, Tenrow is known for his arrogance and is generally a dislikeable character. Being a member of Ikoro means he is one of the Arena champions; above Endrance and below Taihaku. He appears to be connected to Orca and Balmung and has been seen assisting them.
* Taihaku (Class: Steam Gunner) - Taihaku is the current Guildmaster of Ikoro and, therefore, one of the most powerful characters in The World. Being the Guildmaster of Ikoro makes him one of the arena champions; above both Endrance and Tenrow.
* Iyoten (Class: Blade) - The leader of a pair of PKs that targeted Haseo when he first logged into The World. Ovan first met Haseo after PKing the two and it is speculated that Ovan 'hired' them to PK Haseo.
* Asta (Class: Brandish) - Iyoten's partner in a pair of PKs that targeted Haseo when he first logged into The World. Ovan first met Haseo after PKing the two and it is speculated that Ovan 'hired' them to PK Haseo.
* Orca (Class: ???) - Presumably one of the antagonists in .hack//GU Vol. 2, this Orca is similar to Tri-Edge in that it resembles a hagard version of Orca that appears as if it were stitched together of various body parts. He and Balmung appear to be attempting to resurrect Tri-Edge. It can be assumed from past history that he will be a Blade.
* Balmung (Class: ???) - Presumably one of the antagonists in .hack//GU Vol. 2, this Balmung is similar to Tri-Edge in that it resembles an almost feral version of the original Balmung. He and Orca appear to be attempting to resurrect Tri-Edge. It can be assumed from past history that he will be a Blade.
It is worth noting that that the titles of the first eight characters listed, the Infinity 8, retain the same titles as those of the Eight Phases from the original .hack series. Note: The "Infinity 8" can also be known as the "Eight of Epitaph".
The ability to fight as an Avatar is synonymous with the Epitaph-PCs, which were created by CC Corp. in an attempt to restore Aura. They now serve the purpose of allowing players to destroy AIDA but are also used in fights against each other for numerous reasons. Only people of a certain mental state, known as Candidates, are capable of wielding the Avatars without mental deteriation. The fire that destroyed The World also resulted in the loss of the majority of Avatars and, as a result, CC Corp. has no control over who received the Epitaph-PCs.
