So I went with some friends (one who was visiting for a while after moving to Australia two years ago) to see Transformers last night in theaters.
To say the LEAST: If you do not like Transformers, go see the movie anyways. To say the MOST: The movie was so freakin' intense that it felt like a whole rollercoaster rush of action. The beginning was a bit slow, but it picked up and went crazy awesome everywhere.
After seeing the movie as we left, one of my friends commented that of all the battle scenes (There were about 5-7 major ones) he liked the very first one the best. (Hope I'm not spoiling anything here) Which happened to be at the beginning 10 minutes of the movie where a Decepticon (Blackout I think) went ballastic and destroyed a US Military Base somewhere in Qatar.
I thought to myself: "What the heck? The last scene was much more intense than that, why did he like it more?"
Then I looked back at all the other scenes... Excluding the first, all of them took place in broad daylight. The first one was at night... or Twilight anyways. I then began thinking about other movies and dramatic scenes and what the weather was like, and then realized why the final fight in Transformers didn't go as far as it could have: It wasn't raining.
I don't know why, but apparently rain is appeasing to us to draw out dramatic tension in films (as well as other medias). Possibly a cliche started by Walt Disney Studios (though that is a bit bias since half of the films I seen were Disney ones), but the more memorable dramatic scenes of a movie have rain as a dramatic tone.
Here's a list of some:
-Hercules (Fight with the Hydra)
-Matrix: Revolutions (Showdown with Smith)
-*I HAVE NOT SEEN THIS YET, JUST A PREVIEW* PotC: AWE (Jack vs. Davy Jones aboard the Flying Dutchman)
-Kingdom Hearts (Deep Dive secret ending sequence; fight in the World That Never Was against tons of Heartless)
-Fullmetal Alchemist *manga* (Ed vs. Scar for the first time)
-One Piece: Dead End Adventure *Movie 4* (Luffy vs. Gasparade finale fight)
-Lion King *I think* (Half-way through the fight of Scar and Simba)
-Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Cloud vs. Sephiroth)
-The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Fighting Ganon)
-The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Fighting stupid Ganondorf)
-The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (Fighting cool Ganondorf)
-Sonic Adventure (Fighting Chaos)
-Tales of Symphonia OVA Ep. 1 (The Fight Between Lloyd and Forcystus)
-Tales of Phantasia OVA Ep. 1 (It's raining outside the building where they are fighting Mars/Dhaos)
Discuss:
Why do you think we like this effect during such scenes?
Where are other places you have seen this used in media? (Can be anything from books to games to manga to movies)
...
Are you going to see Transformers, XD?
