A few days later...

“You really sure it’s him...” An old man asked. They looked out of a window to see a teenaged boy meditating in the middle of the temple grounds. “It must be. I’ve talked to the other Air temples and none of them have produced benders of his caliber.” Another man said. “Well he did choose the string powered propeller...” a man said. “True...and his skills are unrivaled.” As they looked at him the boy was dressed in the attire of a normal Air Nomad, he even had the tattoos that proved he was a master of airbending, but no matter how they tried he wouldn’t stay bald for more than a few months. After his fifteenth birthday they decided to make him an exception to the rule and allow him to grow his hair which he did gratefully. At his seventeenth birthday he had to tie his hair up into a topknot just to look presentable. “So when is the waterbender supposed to be here?” “Sometime tomorrow. He should have left the North Pole a few days ago.” “Well then shall we tell him?” “Yes lets.” The man said. They both left the temple and walked up to the boy. As they approached the boy opened his eyes and looked up to the old men. “Monk Guan, Monk Quin, how are you?” The boy said, a smile spreading across his face. “Kai, you seem so old for one so young...” Guan said laughing abit while shaking his head. “Thanks you Master Guan I’ll take that as a compliment.” Kai said standing and stretching. “Kai we need to speak to you. It’s about your stay here...” Quin said slowly. “Am I to move again? But I was beginning to like it here...” Kai said frowning. “Kai it’s not that you’re leaving, it’s that....” “You’ve been chosen to represent us in the battle with the Fire Nation.” Quin and Guan said. “Mmm....me?” Kai said with a confused expression as he pointed to himself. “Yes Kai, you. We’ve spoken to the East, West, and South and you’re the bender for the task.” Quin said. “Master Quin I’m honored to take this task on but what is it exactly that I must do?” Kai asked. The monks started back into the temple with Kai at their heels. “You, Kai. You along with three other chosen children must protect these lands from the Fire Nation.” Guan said. They stopped just outside Kai’s room and turned to face him. “Well that sounds easy, but I’m sure it’s going to be quite the challenge.” Kai said. “Aye it is. You must take care of yourself Kai. We know your parents died along time ago by the hands of the Fire Nation but you must not loose your mind when fighting them.” Quin said. Kai’s head lowered when the monks mentioned his parents and his hair covered his eyes. “I wont...” Kai said lowering his voice. “Quin!” Guan exclaimed angerly looking over at his partner. “I’m sorry Guan but I’m just warning the boy.” Quin said. Without another word Kai slipped into his room and closed the door. “Look what you did! You had to bring them up didn’t you!” Guan exclaimed. “Well I wasn’t going to bring up my parents. They lived a happy life.” Quin said with a nod. Guan turned away disgusted at his friend and walked away. “Sometimes I can’t believe you Quin.” Guan said shaking his head.
Kai sat in his room alone for the first time since he arrived at the Northern Temple. His eyes traveled along the stone walls of the room and then to the bed. A bed. Memories flooded into Kai’s mind of his parents. How he used to jump into their bed when it was storming and how they would comfort him in the storm. He sat on the bed and placed his head in his hands. Ever since then, when the Fire Nation attacked his home Kai traveled from air temple to air temple, learning the ways of airbending faster than any monk besides that of Avatar Aang. And now he was to join with three different children to fight the Fire Nation. How could a child of the Fire Nation attack his own home?! Kai sighed for a moment and looked out his window with a longing gaze. “Mom....Dad....I’ll do this for you.” Kai said as he watched the sun slowly set. He slowly laid back on the bed and with a yawn he slowly went to sleep.

While he dreamt Kai found himself amongst what looked like the ruins of the Southern air temple. There he saw the statues of all of the Avatars up to the most recent one. Avatar Ryoko. Kai studied them closely, trying to imagine them in his head. He found it impossible until he saw the face of Aang. “A fellow Airbender. And you were the last of your kind. But thanks to you Avatar Aang we live once more.” Kai said bowing in front of Aang. “And now you must carry the torch Kai.” A voice called from his right. There a ghostly figure of Avatar Ryoko sat staring at a wall. “Lady Avatar!” Kai yelled in surprise. “Please Kai, not so loud, you’ll wake the other avatars.” Ryoko said with a soft smile. Kai slowly walked twords her with abit of caution. “It’s alright Kai I won’t bite.” He said with a laugh. “How are you...you’re dead aren’t you?” Kai asked. “Well that’s one way of putting it.” She said scoffing. “I’m sorry, I’m just not used to talking with people who have passed on.” Kai said sitting next to her. “Heh I was at first too. You’ll get used to it.” Ryoko said looking over at him with a smile. Kai gave a smile back and looked twords the ceiling. “So all of the people here used to be avatars...” Kai said in amazement as he looked at all of the statues. “Yep, every last one of them. Listen, Kai. I don’t have much time here. I came to tell you that you must be careful with the Fire Nation. Sozen’s Comet is this year, just like Avatar Aang you must defeat him before then or the Fire Nation will be unstoppable.” Ryoko said looking at Kai. Kai looked at Ryoko seriously and nodded. “Thank you Lady Avatar I...I mean we will.” Kai said. “Good. Oh and Kai?” Ryoko asked. “Yes?” “Call me Ryoko.” She said with a wink. Kai started to blush as she vanished and he woke up in a cold sweat. “What was that...” Kai asked slowing his breathing down. Suddenly his door busted open and monks Guan and Quin stood at it’s brink with worried looks on their faces. “Kai are you ok?” Guan asked. “Yes I am...” Kai said slowly. “Some monks saw that your room was glowing...some even saw glowing out at sea....” Quin said. “Quick now, get ready the Water Tribe boy is almost here.” Guan said.

It took another hour but Tenkai finally made it to the shores of the Northern air temple. After that crazy dream last night Tenkai was glad to see some land. As he finally made it though it was looking like Tenkai wouldn’t be seeing much land. As he docked a boy of about his age wearing Air Nomad clothing stepped in his boat and sat down across from him. “Hi, my names Kai.” The Air Nomad said with a bow of his head. “Tenkai, it’s a pleasure.” He said returning the gesture. “Now boys you’ll be heading twords the Earth Kingdom for your next companion.” Monk Guan said. “Aye Master Guan thank you for everything.” Kai said. “No Kai, thank you. And you too Master Tenkai.” “ May the avatars watch over you.” Both monks said. They boat took off once more, this time heading Omashu, home of the third bender to their quest....
