Is it that the longer the entry is, the more gold?

I shall try.

The main character, Ed, is a 19 year old cab driver with a very "blah" life. He has a dog that stinks, his mom berates him constantly, he's in love with one of his friends who is always with other guys. Not actually loving them, just having sex with them. He's got three best friends, two guys, and that girl. They play cards several times a week. He and his friends are in a bank robbery hold up, and he gives the keys to his friend's craptastic car to the robber. The car doesn't start, and he gets arrested, tried, jailed for six months. A little while later, he gets a playing card in the mail, the Ace of Diamonds, with three addresses written on it. He brings it up with his friends, and the girl suggests he has to do something good for all those people. The people are an old lady who lives alone, a 15 year old girl, and a mother and daughter with an abusive dad/husband. He basically watches these people for a long time before doing anything, mostly because the abusive guy is enormous and terrifies him. He helps the other two first to build up his confidence, but he's still scared. And then he gets a little nudging from the people who sent the cards. Can't actually say what without giving too much away, but during this whole thing, he's getting help from Audrey, the girl friend. Ed told them all he threw the card away, but she knows he's lying, and she sorta helps him out. When he finishes with that card, he gets another, and then another, and the last one is the Ace of Hearts. (Well, not THE last, but.. once again, giving too much away.) It was just so amazing. The summaries and stuff really don't do it justice. It's grouped as a young adult book, but it isn't annoying and melo-drama-y the way young adult books about teenagers are. I definately think it isn't limited to that age.
