c h a p t e r o n e

"Oi! Niki!" Blue eyes fluttered open at the sound of his name.

"Hm?" He sighed lazily. Niki lay his head against the window of the bus seat, his long brown-orange hair whisking around in the wind.

"Niki, you totally missed it! We were playing a game and Elijah got himself out! Hilarious, man!" His friend, Deryk, hit him over the head from the seat behind him. He was seated with his cousin, Seth, who had also fallen asleep [lying against Deryk's arm]. Niki let out a quiet giggle, they were so adorable.

Then he felt a slight tug at his hair. He turned to look at Nathaneal, who was twisting around Niki's hair on his finger while his other arm went across the back of his neck. Niki snuggled into his embrace, as the air seemed to get colder.

"Nee, Nate," The brunette cooed. "Do you feel the cold?" Suddenly, Nate's other arm went around Niki, tightening the hug.

"Yes." He whispered. And as the class got closer and closer to Millton Hills, their destination, the air became musky, colder, and damper. Their teacher, Mrs. Queenston, stood up.

"Okay, class. It seems like the weather isn't as we had expected today, but I've been told will get better tommorrow. So today stick with your buddy and we'll be off to Gardenhouse, leave the amusement park for tomorrow." She clapped her hands and made a move for the bus doors. Everyone stood up, shoving and pushing to get out first. Niki clinged to Nate, hoping not to get trampled under everyone else.

"I can't wait to see the flowers."
"Screw the flowers! I'm heading straight for the carnivorous plants!"
"Eww!"
"I heard they have a banana tree!"
"I heard they have strawberry bushes!"
"Yummy! Will we get to eat them?"
"Yessir, I hope so!"
People were chattering loudly, trying to forget the cold. The town looked deserted. There was a huge field with hills, and on the other side was a stream and a staircase. It looked like it led up to the cinema on the top of the hill across the stream. They walked past a McDonalds, and noticed, finally, the smallest amount of people being lively. It made Niki ease a bit, he was happy there were people other then them here. He wasn't as interested in the Gardenhouse as the others, he just wanted to get to their hotel.

It was then they passed a huge, old building. Niki took in a breath, it looked so pretty! It was Victorian-styled, with shingles on the rooftop and brown lines framing around white near windows. Niki could try and imagine the inside, looking warm and comfy.

"Nate, look at that house! It's gorgeous!" Niki pointed towards it and Nate took a peek and smiled.

"Yes, it sure is." He half-mumbled heartily. They both looked ahead toward the building attached to it. It was just as big but not as pretty. A greenhouse. Mrs. Queenston went up to the doors and pulled. They were locked. She sighed unhappily.

"Looks like we'll have to wait for tomorrow for Gardenhouse, and amusement park the day after." She said, looking down at the ground. She could hear mumbles and groans of disappointment. Niki gave a weak smile. Inside he felt relieved they could sleep, as he was awake all night long the day before. Suddenly, Elijah spoke up.

"Hey Niki, I'll race you!" Niki laughed and started to run, letting go of Nate's hand.

When they got to the hotel, it was even more amazing than the building they saw near Gardenhouse. Niki [who was way ahead of the group] literally ran inside but was stopped by another boy named Yuri, who tangled Niki's long hair between his fingers and pulled. "Wait." He whispered harshly. Niki shivered and tried to get Yuri to release his hair, but he refused to let go.

"Le- let me go!" Niki cried. Yuri broke out in a fit of wry laughter.

"Let you go?" He tapped his finger to his lips as though to think. "Hm, so you can just run along, and tell everyone?" He pulled harder, causing Niki to let out a yelp. "No, I think we'll go have some... fun. I think Gardenhouse looks great, don't you agree?" He took out a gun out of his pocket and put it to Niki's head. "If you scream or move I'll kill you." Niki bit his lip, holding back some tears. Yuri led him to the side of the building, waiting for everyone else to go inside. Niki felt colder without Nate making him laugh or smile. The brunette felt Yuri let out a sigh when everyone went in. He let go of Niki for a moment, also putting down the gun, giving Niki a second to run. He took it. Niki ran from Yuri, but didn't get far. Yuri grabbed Niki by his long hair again, causing the boy to scream out once more.

"LET ME GO!" Niki screamed and thrashed out of Yuri's grip. The long-haired boy scrambled on the ground, grabbing for the gun. When he found the handle of it, he pointed it to Yuri, panting. Yuri laughed again and put his hands up.

"Can you even pull the trigger?" He teased, slyly moving behind the effeminate brunette. Niki didn't move or respond as Yuri slipped his hands around his neck. "Hmm? No answer?" One of his arms moved forward and handled the gun, slowly trying to remove it from Niki's hands. "Now be a good little boy, and give Yuri his gun back." Yuri flipped his orange hair out of his face and his palm went infront of the barrel.

BANG!

"Son of a--" Yuri craddled his [now bloodied] hand. Niki felt tears again. He dropped the gun and ran into the hotel, leaving the orange-haired boy to bleed outside. When he reached his room he felt strong arms wrap around him. Nate.

"Where were you?" He asked. But Niki couldn't answer, he felt too tired from crying. He pushed out of Nate's grip, and his worried friend caught him before he fell on the ground. "Niki! Niki, are you alright?!" Bloodshot blue eyes squeezed shut in fear but reopened and Niki exhaled sharply.

"I shot Yuri." Was his only reply. Nate looked back at him with a bewildered look. "He tried to kidnap me and I shot him. He, he would have killed me if I didn't..."

Suddenly, Nate smiled. He pulled Niki into his embrace, bringing the longed-for warmth around him. Niki closed his eyes once more, happily allowing the dark realm of unconciousness to overcome him.
