Awakening A Plea Of Vengeance
- prologue - *
Darkness, an entity nobody truly understands, Is it a depth of mysterious perfection, so deep that not even the sharpest eye can perceive? Is it a form of comfort, used to black out the visual disturbances during night? Or is it a way of shrouding the obvious, giving stealth, causing fear, and raining anarchy across the mortal realms of man?
* THUD! A moan erupted from the far side of the room. a muffled cry escaping the mouth of a young girl as a soaked rag was shoved hastily into her gasping jaws. As she was dragged down the stairs she managed to smash an antique vase, which had been positioned coincidentally on the corridor floor of the small cottage. Kai awoke with a start, he found himself breathing in a heavy tone as cold sweat beaded his brow. He could hear from the corridor bellow a series of muffled screams and bangs. His first thoughts on what was happening was “ WHAT THE …” However, despite the sudden rude awakening, he found himself curious of what was going on downstairs. Almost instinctively he broke into a run, he could see something was wrong in his family’s home, as he went he saw evident signs of struggle, they were discreet but they were there. Such as the frequent tear in the carpet which wasn’t there before, the odd gash in the walls which lead onto his mothers bedroom door wasn’t there before. The dirt which plastered the floor in an awkward trail wasn’t there before. And the hard to miss vase which was shattered all over the floor WASN’T THERE BEFORE!!!
This disturbed him, this terrified him, this edged him on even further. He collided with the banister suddenly with a penetrating thud, he could hear the screams almost clearly now. What was causing them, why here? Of all people why does this have to happen to me? As he thought to himself the image at the bottom of the stairs explained everything, the drag marks, the tears, the screams, the broken objects laid around the floor….
The figure descending the stairs, what was it doing? Then his eyes leered at the thing over its back. It was kicking and screaming. it was his sister. Kai leapt back several feet thinking it had seen him (whatever it was), unluckily enough it did see him, immediately breaking into a run to escape its new pursuer, it plunged into the darkness outside of his front door.
Kai ran into his room and grabbed a cloak, missed, his arm was jerking in such a speed he kept missing the cloak and knocking it askew on the peg. Fumbling around he grabbed it, whipped it over his back and ran into the living room. he looked around , seeking something. those fearful eyes of his darting around the small alcove he called a living room, he found what he was looking for, a glass cupboard above the fireplace. in such a rush as he, a normal person would have opened it. Kai didn’t, his fist smashed straight through the glass. His hand felt the cold touch of metal and his face broke into a sick grin, he’d found what he was looking for. A katana. a white blade which was incredibly light, incredibly durable, incredibly harmful.
What Kai saw that night left him emotionally disturbed for the rest of his life, it rendered him almost incapable of any positive thoughts. It dedicated his life to revenge….
…. it left him on the brink of insanity.

- chapter one - - (So far so bad) - Again, Kai had just woke up from a dream about his past, Endlessly he’d dream about chasing a robed figure through burning woods, whilst snowflakes fall from disenchanted skies. He’d remember the horrific screams of his sister as he would recall the moment he saw death. Her death, that night, that moment. That blade.
The piercing shriek which exploded from her lungs as the blade clove her in two, the squirt of blood which seemed to constantly flow out of her torso and lower body. He’d remember the gasp that had even took him by surprise as it whined out of his lungs in a slow gradual, painful moan. And the cape, that black cape. The cape which was as black as midnight with Elvin runes encrypted across the back of it. All of the dreams he had witnessed from horrific angles, had ended in that cape. And the swift flick as it whipped off into the forest undergrowth.
And every time he’d recall that memory, he would see a startlingly accurate scene of himself wailing on his knees over the hopelessly dead body of his sister. Everything in life seemed painful from then on, the happiness in life he had seeped out of him faster than his sisters blood blossomed on the now crimson stained snow. How he’d took off her ring and placed it on his index finger, as a constant reminder of the scumbag who took his sisters life.
Kai rose grudgingly from his rest, he’d just thought about that dream. He held up his right hand and looked at the ring, as he looked at it he felt a coy smile start to curve his lips. every time he set eyes on it, yes, he was reminded of his sister, but he was also reminded of her kidnapper, he would think constantly of ways on which torture would be the most painful, and yes, even he knew he sounded evil, he didn’t like it, just the thought made him shiver. He wasn’t evil, he knew it, he was doing this for vengeance, he was doing this for justice, he was doing this so he would be able to look into her killers eyes, as they would fall to the floor in excruciating pain. yes that was it, he was doing this for her, not for himself.
He untangled his legs as he moved them in a groggy fashion, he could feel the muscles in his calves strain as he kicked away a boulder he was sleeping under. He chuckled to himself almost insanely, as if he had told a subtle joke to an imaginary passer by. No, he wasn’t crazy, he knew it. Just…misguided that’s it, just misguided. He wasn’t chuckling randomly, just the fact he was capable of pushing a large rock away from him with his legs, so all that training in the forest had done him some good.
Damn, he had rested a while, “well I suppose I should set off north, shouldn’t I?”. he sprang up with an energetic leap. Tightened his bearskin boots, buttoned up his travelling cloak, flipped his bag over his shoulder and set off in around several heartbeats. He set of north, all the while the forest was getting lighter, “bloody hell, I haven’t seen this light in a while”, thinking of how long he had spent in the forest he did get puzzled, how long had he spent in there? He ran a scarred hand over his matted beard, “hey, it has been a while then” with haste he stopped by a nearby stream, pulled out his katana, and trimmed most of the mats out of his hair, he did have to admit though, the beard did suit him. He felt there was something reassuring about that silky black hair which grew from his face, and it did kind of make him look better.
He looked at the hill ahead of him as he trudged up the path, the local tavern getting bigger and bigger as he got nearer. He had a sudden urge to look up, when he did he saw the sunset, that beautiful sunset, there was something appealing about the way the light sky faded from blue to yellow, to red, to a dark crimson, CRIMSON? He winced as he had a flashback of his sisters corpse, the red pond she was lying in of her own blood. Kai shuddered “ugghhh” “not this again” he forced the image out of his mind as he paced up towards the tavern, constantly trying to think about how much alcohol he would try down this time. Well, he didn’t mind, he shouldn’t be troubled by this, he had trained non stop for five years, and he knew her killers time would come. So why did he still feel bad? “meh” he shrugged off the worst of it as he walked up the small beer garden by the front of the cheeky little building which was the tavern.
He opened the dented door with a swift push, and almost immediately every eye in the room was on him. What were they looking at? Feeling quite childish kai exclaimed “ what, you never seen a traveller before?” well, he couldn’t understand it, but then again, not many people walk into a bar with there hood up. Almost instantly a clearly drunken man, kai would’ve guessed he’d have been in his thirties, came up to him and exclaimed “ whuh, are ya trying ter be funny stranger?”. kai was taken aback, what should he have done? The guy reeked of alcohol. And his attitude towards him stank even more, well what could he do? The middle aged man quickly pushed him, kai responded almost immediately and gave the guy a blow to the face, sending him reeling through the tables behind.
This attracted many dirty looks from the people all over the room, but kai just ignored them and calmly walked over to the barman, yanked his dark hood from his head revealing his long wavy black hair, asked for several tankards of anything strong and alcoholic . The barman gave him a slightly strange look which made him appear slightly taken aback. But kai didn’t mind, he handed over several silver pieces and sat there in a dark corner trying to drink his troubles away. But what can he do? He thought, his life was despicable after his past, so he should be entitled to a pint or two!!
