Aron signaled to his men that they were to stay out of the battle. So the crowd of men gathered around the two as they prepared for the battle. They made a patter with a supporter of Aron standing between two supporters of Jaan and created a circle in which the two would battle.
"So, are you ready to do this? Or would you rather back down and talk about it?" asked Aron.
"Yeah right, you were the talker. I always did the better fighting. Hope you are ready for this," replied Jaan.
As the two began, those in the circle stood perfectly still. Jaan drew his blade and with a fearsome cry jumped and swung. As though it were child's play, Aron side stepped the attack, and drew his blade so that it struck Jaan in the stomach. The entire circle stepped back. The movement of the men scared some of them that they dropped to their knees and moved outside the circle.
"So Jaan, are you sure you wish to continue? Even some of your men are ready to give up. You should know no slave can grow faster than his master. You chose the wrong master."
"Give up? To the likes of you, I'd never..." with that Jaan attacked only to be hit with the hilt of Aron's blade again, in a spot three centimeters from the first. With the wind knocked out of him, Jaan fell to the ground. Looking around he noticed only Aron's men stood in the inter circle. No one would rescue him from this fight. So he got on his knees and started to be for mercy.
"Forgive my Aron, it is my job to protect this fort. I guess I chose the wrong man to follow."
"There is no need for that. Let's move forward. We must stop Nahuel from destroying our home." With that everyone started walking away. Aron took one last look at Jaan and turned away.
Jaan saw an opening drew his blade and rushed at Aron.
The troops started to form a circle around the two men. However, this time men moved away from the circle because of the blood. A brave man became such a coward that he would go so far as to attack from behind after surrendering. And now a man is dead. Blood was every where, in hair, on the walls, on clothing, and even a few of the candles were put out. The men never expected war to happen inside the fort. Anywhere outside a guarded city was subject to the horror, but this place was their home, they had guarded it for years now, even losing brothers to guard it.
As the blade was removed from the body, it fell limp to the ground. Some of those trained in medicine raced over to the body, hoping they could do something. But it was too late; Jaan lay dead on the ground. The blade had pierced his heart.
Aron couldn't believe what had just happened. Trickery was a way of life for some people. He had always known Jaan to be deceitful, but to have gone that far. Aron was a trained solider. An attack from behind usually ended with someone dead. Besides Aron had a record of killing or critically wounding classmates and teachers who had used the same tactic. Jaan should have known about the record. So why would he have taken the risk? Snapping the blade through the air, Aron knocked most of the blood off the blade, and then placed it back in the sheath. "Let's go."
"But what about...?" started a voice from the crowd.
"He'll be there when we get back. Those of you who wish to stay and make sure are able. The only reason he would attack like that is to distract and delay us. We are on a mission to reclaim this land, and to free these people from slavery. Let us continue," explained Aron.
All but a handful of men continued on with Aron. The handful that stayed behind were those most affected by the event. They were close to Jaan and were deeply troubled by what had just happened. A few stayed because of the affect of the blood and the idea that war could happening inside a fort.
Aron knew what the other groups would be up against, men similar in strength and valor to Jaan. He was in a hurry to help them.
