What is the very best thing you can give to plants?

Compost! blaugh
Since I plan on having a vegetable garden in the spring, I'm gonna need some compost, as well as a compost bin, which I plan on making this afternoon or this evening.
The kind I want to use is basically a trash can with holes in it, since it is made with things I already have.
Trash can, check. Power tools, check.
