The cold evening rain drizzled over a tall male who held a newspaper out. Another sale. Fierce wind whipped against roughened skin as his eyes, troubled green flickered with honey, fought against the sudden downpour. This was Deegan Carter. Seventeen years of age and working all hours of the night at a newspaper stand. He didn?t enjoy the job, but needed the money. So he put up with it. As the weather became fierce, so did the state of his hair. A curly brown mop of tangles blew around his face, causing him to become momentarily blind. A soft sigh was barely audible from his lips as he pushed it out of his face, and rolled his eyes. Friday was night was always busy, and he needed to concentrate on the job. A tall lady passed him a few coins and after he?d given her some silver change and her magazine he let out a silent groan. Another sale. A glance at his watch showed that he would soon be free of work, and for that he was thankful. With a shiver, he began the pack up process.
It was still early for a Friday night, and although he had promised his father a safe return by 10pm, the temptation to disobey was hard to resist. Told to meet his friends at eleven o?clock, by the side entrance of the Fern Tree Gully Cemetery, he set off at a fast pace. Knowing he would be made to wait for the two lagers, he reached the cemetery with plenty of time to spare. Flopping down on the asphalt, he waited.
A short while later Deegan was still sitting in the same spot, pins and needles running up and down his legs. Wriggling them proved difficult and the pain remained. A deep voice boomed overhead, similar to the sound of a mechanic laugh. Panic began to stir through Deegan?s stomach as he looked around wildly. Still, the voice got closer, and it became apparent that there was more than one. Two voices in fact. At once Deegan realized who the laughs belonged to. Charlie and Spike. Relief flooded through him just as his legs began to work again. He sprang up shakily and grinned, calling out a fake cry for help. His reply was a giggle from Charlie as she approached. High fives were exchanged between boys and then they began to plan.
Spike was first over the gate, which was at least seven foot high. Naturally he was aiming to impress the other two, and he succeeded. Charlie, who wouldn?t dare climb anything higher than her own head, was hoisted over a smaller gate by Deegan himself. After following the lead of spike, Deegan was now inside too. And together, they pulled out small torches and began their hunt for ghosts. Though Deegan knew they would never really find any ghosts, the adventure was why he?d agreed to go.
After clowning around and walking through path after path of tombstones they sat down for a rest. Nothing out of the ordinary had happened yet, and it was evident that nothing would. Taking a seat on one of the marble gravestones, which belonged to a Mr. J. Bellows, he pulled his drink bottle out with a sigh. After drinking deeply he passed the bottle to Charlie, who sat on the grass, too scared to anger the spirits by invading the privacy of a grave. Spike, who was trying to pry open a grave, stopped suddenly and stood up straight, face dark.
?Did any of you see that?? he whispered, voice barley a whisper as he stared at the others. Both had seen it, and Charlie only blinked, unsure of what to make of the movement. Deegan, on the other hand, looked around wildly and gasped. ?s**t, Over there!? he cried, pointing to a figure with a torch. Suddenly the torch light flickered off and footsteps were heard in the distance.
Deegan jumped up and tugged at Charlie?s hand, whom was still immobile, though had a fear stricken expression. ?Come on, we?re outa here? he growled at Spike, who turned and ran in the direction of the gates. Two shopping bags, which had been resting on a grave were left, because Deegan knew that if one of them had grabbed the bags, which were easily heard when picked up, the security guards would be after them for sure.
They ran as fast as they could through the blackened night. Torches would have alerted the feds and taking that risk would be plain stupid. So after five minutes of solid running and tripping over all sorts of broken pavement and sticks, they came to the gates. Breathing haggardly and eyes wide, the three stared. They were definitely not alone in the cemetery, and they did not imagine the torch lights flashing across at them. The gate was wide open.
Now Deegan could feel his adrenalin pumping through his system. Fear was not a word to describe how he felt. Excitement was more appropriate. Looking backwards at both Spike and Charlie he knew that they felt similar, and with a grin he ran through the gate. Three pairs of footsteps followed and for a second Deegan was confused. Then he realised. The security guard had followed them He looked back quickly and confirmed his own suspicions. The guard was high on their tail.
With only one thing left to do he cried loudly ?SPLIT!? and tore in another direction. Being brother and sister, Charlie and Spike went the other way, and Deegan prayed secretly that the security guard followed them. He didn?t.
Deegan knew he was in trouble if he didn?t move faster, so with all his might he ran. Through the park and over the railway tracks, down the river and across a car park. His street came into view and he let out a loud laugh. Jumping the fence of a neighbour?s yard he knew he would be alright. A deep shudder ran through his body and he closed his eyes. After catching his breath he climbed another fence, this one leading to his own backyard. Quietly, he snuck to a window on the first floor of the house and tugged it open. Within another minute he was inside.
The house was dark and quiet, and with a quick sneak at a clock he breathed a sigh of relief. It was only one am. Taking the stairs quickly and silently, he reached the second floor and entered his room. A buzz in his pocket scared him momentarily, and then he laughed softly. Pulling a mobile phone out of his back pocket he looked at the number and grinned, answering instantly with ?I?m safe.?
This story is inspired by true event, one that happened to me a week ago, but as all stories there are cirtain dramatic effects added to it. Enjoy! Charlie heart
