I'm Interested In
Eli enjoys sailing, obviously. The fact that the school is on an island just make it easier for him to do so. He’s also a very skilled woodcarver, able to make things ranging from simple toys to flutes to little carvings of people. Eli can play the flute as well as he can make one and is a fairly good dancer, though he’ll only dance for you if he really likes you. He enjoys the occasional cigarette, usually after class while sitting on the school roof.
I Have Problems With
Eli really doesn’t have many fears. He used to fear drowning, or being lost at sea, but now those things don’t threaten him. When he gets attached to someone, he does develop an almost heart-wrenching fear of losing them. Eli dislikes the yuppified rich boys who call themselves a sailor because they have a fancy yacht and an underpaid migrant crew to run it for them. He can be jumpy and anxious during bad storms, due to bad memories from his childhood as a sailor's son.
I Can Be
Elijah was always a kind heart, human or vampire. He is a hard worker as well and has little to no patience to those people that sit around and complain about how life hates them and how things are just so hard, and blah, blah, blah. In his own words, there’s no problem out there that can’t be solved by a little thought and a lot of elbow grease. Eli doesn’t like viewing humans as food, but he’s a realist (or so he likes to think) and if it came down to a choice between saving a human or saving himself, guess who he’d choose? Survival of the fittest, he calls it, though Eli has found himself attached enough to a human here or there that it made an impact on him as a person. He is a bit of a loner and can often be found on his own, carving wood or singing old sea shanties to himself.
My Story From The Past
Eli’s father was the captain of a ship called Sweet Marie, a ship that carried cargo from Europe to the Americas. On one certain trip, Captain Rankin brought his wife on board with him. The trip took three months and, after but a month at sea, Mrs. Rankin gave birth to the captain’s first born son, who they called Elijah, Eli for short. Eli was raised on the Sweet Marie, learning to walk on a deck before he could walk on dry land. He was a cabin boy at first and as he grew, he rose through the ranks, until he was his father’s first mate at the ripe old age of seventeen. One day, as the ship was on a voyage from Great Britain to the colony of Massachusetts, a stowaway was discovered. A young girl, desperate to make it to the colonies and find her father, a settler that had left their family to make a new life for them in the New World.

While most of Eli’s crewmates had less than moral plans for the girl, Eli defended her, threatening to kill the ones that tried to harm her and arrest the ones that survived. The girl was made to earn her keep as a companion for Eli’s mother, who had taken part in every journey since Eli’s birth. However, there was something strange about the stowaway, who was called Tabitha. She never took to the decks during the day when Eli’s mother took strolls for fresh air, and not once did anyone on the ship ever see her eat. Not long after Tabitha was discovered, a strange plague struck the ship. Three sailors died on the journey, though the ship’s doctor found nothing wrong with them. Suspicion fell on Tabitha. The sailors called her “witch” and “demon” and demanded that she be killed. Once again, Eli defended her, calling the men superstitious. Not long afterwards, the strange disease struck Eli’s mother. When Eli went to see his mother in her private quarters, he was shocked at what he found. Tabitha, teeth buried in his mother’s throat, drinking her blood. Despite his cruel words to the crew, Eli was just as superstitious as they were, and saw Tabitha for what she was.

Outraged that she’d do such a thing after he defended her twice, Eli grabbed hold of her hair and dragged her to the decks above. It was just before the morning sunrise and he was hell-bent on exposing Tabitha to the sun’s rays, ridding the world of her forever. In self defense, Tabitha bit Elijah and drained him almost to the point of death. She then pushed him overboard and claimed that he had attacked her, mad with grief over his mother’s impending death, and had fallen over board. By some miracle, the ship was close enough to her American port that Eli managed to keep his head above water long enough for a fishing boat to find him.

They took him to a slum hospital, little more than a bed where they dropped him and waited for him to die so that they could give the bed to the next ill person. Eli just refused to die, however. He languished in terrible pain for days, but one day, he just seemed to vanish. In reality, he’d wandered out of the hospital in a daze, a terrible thirst clutching at him. Three dead street-dwellers later, and Eli was able to think clearly, and realized that something had happened to him and that he no longer fit in with the rest of humanity. Over the following years, Eli wandered the world, going from port to port like any sailor would.

The only difference? Every ship he sailed on seemed to be struck with the same strange sickness that had afflicted the crew of the Sweet Marie so many years before and a few passengers always passed away before the end of the journey. As the years passed a sea travel began to change, Eli felt oddly out of place. Riggins and sails were replaced by motors, journeys that took months lasted only weeks, then days. He no longer felt at home on the docks of the world, and sought a different home. His wanderings brought him to the school. Eli relished the new experience and, though it’s been but a few years, he’s come to like it here.
My Special Abilities
Eli, like most vampires, is supernaturally strong and fast. He heals quickly and it’s hard to hurt him in the first place. His senses are very acute. He is also able to withstand sunlight, though even he isn’t sure why.
Else Needed To Know
Eli speaks with a heavy Scottish accent and tends to call people he doesn’t know “lad” or “lass”.
