Cory's dopey journal!
Welp, this is a journal to give me soemthing small and constructive. Y'know, to be responsible and such. I'm gonna put various interesting things in said journal to entertain you all. Cheers.
Big Review: MISFITS!!!
I've been wanting to get the Misfits Box Set ever since I bought Walk Among Us six years ago. 104 tracks and many different takes of the classic Danzig-era Misfits. Yes it's the same 55 songs over and over in many slightly different takes (Case in point, Where Eagles Dare is on here five times.) but it's still the milestone compiling everything of the Misfits.

Okay, that's kind of a lie. Not EVERYTHING the Misfits ever did made it on here, but still very close. I did some research and here's every Misfits track as far as I know that didn't make it to the Box Set...

- Walk Among Us. All the actual songs do appear on the set but in inferior or downright strange sounding versions. Plus if you're reading this and you like music, you should own this anyways. It's only 12 bucks at FYE and it's essential punk music.

- She, Spinal Remains, In The Doorway, and Static Sessions from the Static Age cd. the first two are on the set in slightly different takes the the latter two don't show up anywhere else. Period.

- The Spot Sessions bootleg. Has instrumental versions of Earth A.D. songs. Kind of obscure, really.

- Halloween, Ghouls Night Out, and the alternate take of London Dungeon from 12 Hits From Hell. Probably the best album never released.

- Last Caress from "Beware".

- The "Who Killed Marilyn?" 7" Technically not really a Misfits release.

- All the Post-Danzig material.

- All live bootlegs.

So what is on here? Everything else. And a whole disc of sessions, most of which don't appear anywhere else! So jumping right in...

Disc 1: Collections 1 & 2
At the time these two albums were largely compilations with a bunch of outtakes, 7-inch songs, and stuff from Static Age and Earth A.D. This disc only has the exclusive tracks, but some of them are quite stellar. Collection 1 mainly has some of the songs from 12 Hits and a bit of the Die, Die My Darling 7". Collection 2 has amongst other things, the Halloween 7" and a handful of tracks Glenn recorded after the Misfits broke up. This is why you need to get Walk AMong Us. Braineaters and Hatebreeders are laughable at best here.

Disc 2: Legacy of Brutality, Evilive, and Earth A.D.
Two albums and a live goldmine on one disc. Finally hearing Earth A.D. in stellar quality made my day. I've never been arsed to pay 16 bucks for 21 minutes of music, no matter how good it is. That's why I paid 65 dollars for four hours of music instead.

And Evilive of course is the best live album ever (Save for No Sleep Til' hammersmith by ********' MOTORHEAD!!!) and it's so good I gave my old copy to my friend Angel so she can hear the punk madness. I don't know if she actually liked it but I don't see how she couldn't. ONE MORE TIME YOU ********' a*****e AND YOU DIE!!! God I love that.

Legacy is really alternate takes of the Static Age tracks and others, the ending being Glenn doing a hilarious balls-out Elvis impression with the song "American Nightmare". It's great and very unexpected.

I did that all in reverse, I know.

Disc 3: Sessions
Here's the real wierd gem of this box is the Sessions disc, starting with the Cough/Cool 7", which may be the most un-punk thing I've ever heard. It's real vintage, real awkward sounding. It then bumbles around through very rough recordings of a lot of the same songs you've heard previously, along with a few more of those 12 Hits tracks, 30 in all. The quality is very punk.

Disc 4: Static Age
The lost first album, also a classic in it's own right. I still own my copy mainly for the bonus tunes, because those are amazingly worth owning the album twice...

It's strange, really. it took me 5 years to get this since I've wanted it all those years go upon buying Walk AMong Us waaaaaay back in 2003, but it's still worthwhile. Although it's a bit embarrasing getting the Samhain box set before this. That just seems odd. Admittedly, the hearing of the same tracks over and over can wane on you, but it's damn near everything by this classic punk band.

My ratings on it?

Disc1, Collection: 6/7
Disc1, Collection2: 6/7
Disc2, Legacy: 5/7
Disc2, Evilive: 7/7
Disc2, EarthAD: 7/7
Disc3, Cough/Cool: 5/7
Disc3, 12Hits (Well, 5 of the songs anyways) 7/7
Disc3, Misc. Sessions: 4/7
Disc4, Static Age: 6/7

I recommend this for punk fans and regular listeners of wild, raucous music. Also a great start & finish of getting into the Misfits if you got the cash to spare. I don't recommend it if you own everything else already, however. The few unreleased tracks aren't going to garner the buy too well.

Overall: 6/7
