Chapter Two: The Enemy
3 years passed since Meteorfall. Zuko, Vincent and I were still in Kalm. We've been bonding pretty alright with Vincent, although he has his own missions to accomplished, so we're like teammates at times. Although, we have a rouge rivalry thing before, but it's not as bad recently. A festival was held that day, and Zuko and I went, but Vincent stayed behind for an unknown reason. But even with the great time I was having, something else was on my mind.
"Hey, Zuko. Do you hear that?" I asked with a worried face.
"I could barely hear you!... Um, no, what do you hear?" he questioned.
"Never mind. I think it's just my imagination."
"What does it sound like?"
"Um, let's see... Oh propellers of a helicopter."
"Wierd. Why would there be copter? Unless...Janelle! Where's the sound coming from?! This is not gonna be good," I suddenly realized what he thought. I quickly ran towards the sound, but it was too late. A missile was shot towards a building, and halted the festival. Almost out of nowhere, many copters came out. Zuko and I decided to go for the closest one since we knew that troops will be dispatched soon at Kalm. The copter already sent ground troops towards the confused citizens. Out of nowhere, the troops momentarially paused and began to shoot.
Zuko and I protected most of the citizens by firebending and with a sword I purchased earlier throughout the festival. I became slightly confused with the uniform they were wearing: a black and mako-blue lines running on the suit with a mask and weapon case. Throughout my whole life, I never saw this armor. Could it have been a new organization? But with that question in mind, I continued to liberate Kalm from these unknown attackers. We stopped at a circular plaza with a fountain-like object in the center. Surprisingly and almost ironically, Vincent comes in.
"Vincent!" I yelled. Instantly, he ran towards Zuko and I, but a sound swept the plaza. It was a copter. Zuko and I were ready to destroy it, but Vincent told us to get into a building and wait. Desperately, I dragged Zuko with me, hoping for Vincent to be fine. We searched the building's ground for food, water and potions. While we were searching for items, we heard a missile lauch, and instintively, we checked throught the window. But before we could get there, the blast caused Vincent to pounce inside to escape it.
"Hey, Vincent! Are you okay?" I quickly asked.
He didn't answer, just panted and nodded, but I saw a cut on his elbow. I fixed it up, but he seemed not to care. I told them to check the next floor and they followed, and found an empty room.
"Guys... Stay alert. Something's coming," I warned quickly. Right after that, a giant cloud of smoke appeared, and 2 people came through. One was a giant with blue hair, and the another was a young brown-haired girl about 10 years old. 3 troops, who looked like the other troops before, appeared through a huge hole where the smoke came from. The girl calmly said to Vincent,"The protomateria. Tell us where it is."
I was confused. Who are these people? What's a 'protomateria'? I looked at Vincent with a puzzled look on my face, but he continues to stare at the strangers. After a long silence, the large one said, "Hail Wiess."
Then the 3 grunts said the same phase after him. They soon took aim, and began to shoot. We all dodged the quick attack, and counterattacked. Vincent used his famous gun, Cerberus, while Zuko and I hand-fought the soldiers. After the soldiers attacked, the blue-haired man said to Vincent,"Challenge accepted."
But after two steps, the smaller one fainted on the spot. When the realized, he muttered," Hmph. Luck is on your side."
He grabbed the smaller one who whispered,"I'm... sorry."
He didn't say anything, but just looked at her. Then he looked back at Vincent and announced,"I am Azul. We will meet again," and he left throught the huge hole on the wall.
"What happened here?!" questioned a voice. I heard that voice before. The voice was Reeve. He's not very different from 3 years ago, still has the suit and black hair.
"Vincent Valentine, Janelle, and..." Reeve was stumped.
"Zuko. Pleasure to finally meet you," replied Zuko.
"Ah yes. Pleasure to see you. Pleasure to see all three of you."
"Reeve. It's nice seeing you again. Not a very interesting costume though," Vincent commented.
He laughed. "Well, it took me a while to figure out today."
"What's going on, Reeve? Who are the attackers?" I asked. I needed to know who or what we are fighting.
"DeepGround soldiers. I don't know what's going on, Vincent... Janelle... We could use your help again," he requested. I didn't mind helping, but before I could answer, Vincent replied,"I don't know what you are to, but I want absolutely no part of it."
"Huh?"Zuko and I said in unison. Reeve was flabbergasted, he didn't expect this to happen.
"But, you fought alongside us 3 years ago. We need your help once mor-," before he coul finish the sentence, a DeepGround soldier directly shot him. We were stunned when he hit the ground. Zuko and I checked to see if he was okay, while Vincent shot the soldier. When we lifted the body to put it right-side up, the whole body collapsed into pieces!
"Oh my God," I became petrified, he fell into pieces, like a manikin! I look at the chest, and a heart-sized object came out. It unraveled itself quickly and it was Cait Sith!
"That was a close one! Never was good at fighting," the cat said, "Luckily, I came out wearing 'Reeve'. You're really not a bad bloke, are you Vincent? You pretend not to care, but you always come through in the end."
We were speechless and confused, but that's Cait Sith's game. Vincent replied," Alright, what do you want me to do?"
"Let's run those lads outta town!" he said with his paws stomping the floor, "I'll leave the method up to you guys. When you're tidied things up, meet me at the square in front of the east church."
"What about them?" argued Vincent.
"Well Janelle, Zuko. Wanna help?"
Yeah. I will," I was determined, "I can never abandon my friends."
"If Janelle and Vincent's going, might as well go."
That's settled then. Hop to it, all 3 of ya!"
We left through a door, except for Vincent who jumped through a second floor window (he was talking to Cait Sith a bit more).What a braggart! We exited the plaza area, and met some WRO (World Regenesis Organization) dispatched in the area. One of them, who had a red hat, black hair and glasses, saw us and came to us.
"Ah! Vincent Valentine, Janelle, Zuko. Pleasure to make your aquaintance. I'm Kris Salada, a sergant of this WRO group. If you need any assistance, you may ask me."
"We need Supplies," I told him.
"We'll supply you with this," He handed out 3 backpacks,"For Vincent, we have Vital Rations, Spirit Rations, Potions and some handgun bullets. Janelle, since we knew you were unarmed during the festival, so we supplied you with your main weapons, knives. Also, we put potions, Vital Rations and Spirit Rations. Anything else?"
"Sorry, I wasn't in the meet, so what a WRO?" Zuko asked.
"Sir! The WRO was orginally established 3 years ago after Meteorfall. With Jenova War hero, Revee Tuesti at it's helm, our organizition is dedicated to aiding the healing process of the planet, as well as protecting it from any who attempt further harm... Anything else?"
"Nothing," Vincent said while advancing foward.
"Sir!" a WRO soldier said. We folowed and assisted the troops protecting the citizens. Afterwards, Zuko, Vincent and I slowly entered the church's front court, and scanned the area for either Revee or Cait. Neither was located there, instead a severly damaged DeepGround copter, the same one Vincent supposably destroyed, swooped down to start a fight. Zuko and I stepped up, but Vincent lifted his arm to block us from moving any farther.
"No! We're helping this time!" I protested.
"Yeah! It's useless to stop us! We're seeing this throught to the end!" Zuko proclaimed.
"There's nothing I can do, then..." Vincent said to himself.
The copter barely paused throughout the whole battle. Thankfully, Vincent found it's weak spot, the center where the propellers are connected. Every time we had the chance to get a direct hit, we did. But whenever Zuko or I were open to attack, it aimed for Vincent instead. I felt like there's something that DeepGround wanted from him rather than the 'Protomateria'. The copter shot randomly, and created a scrape on the left side of my waist. I saw Zuko get his right arm shot too. Yet instead of attacking either of us while we recieved knock-back, it paused and scann the area for Vincent. Zuko came to me as soon as he saw me get shot, but I felt he worries about me more than himself. Vincent was on the tip of the church, and jumped off. At the altitude he was in, he began to shoot the weak point, and then landed on it. A dark cloud surrounded him when he transformed into the Gallian Beast! He clawed the copter, jumped off, transformed back, and watched the copter burst into flames behind him. What a showoff! After that, we went to him to regroup, but about 5 DeepGround soldiers appeared. They took aim and began to shoot. Luckily before they fired, a WRO truck appeared, and shielded us from the barrage. Coming out of the truck was the real Revee. I wanted to take a break, so I hid behind the truck while everyone took care of the soldiers.
"Good job, Vincent, Janelle and Zuko," Revee praised. Vincent was sitting on a wooden crate while I sat on the ground on the side of the same crate, and Zuko leaned against the wall.
"Tch,"I rebuttled for the pain.
"Oh, Janelle. Are you hurt?" Revee asked.
"It's merely a scrape... I'll be fine."
"You sure?" Zuko asked with a worried face.
"Yeah. Please don't worry," Just then, The WRO sergant, Kris Salada came in.
"Sir! The liberation of Kalm is successful and complete. Proceed to Edge?"
"Wait a minute," Revee ordered, then he turned to us,"We could use your help, all 3 of you."
Vincent looked down, he has a job to do. "Okay. We'll leave tomarrow night, so get a good night's rest and pack up. Meet here at 8 o'clock."
"Alright," we agreed. And got ready for the new adventure that lied ahead.
