The Illusion
A wild attempt to keep me hoping I'm not just another...
Depth
I can't stand parodies. Well, that's not exactly true; there are a lot of really fun parodies, but so long as they keep it simple, it can be funny and not stupid. But most of the time, people just want to take it too far.

And when it goes that far, it loses depth. MIB, the movie, and more particularly MIB II, no depth. The first one was alright, the jokes were laced heavily, but it was consistent within itself. MIB II, the jokes got even heavier, the movie itself dropped off, and downhill we go. It's just got no depth. Then again, Will Smith doesn't belong in comedy in the first place. I, Robot was a different story.

Moving on, I see this a lot in roleplaying. A new person comes on, and like me, like you, like the next person down the street, they want to have the neatest, most recognized character in all history!

So they make an assassin. ... ... ...
...

...

Right.... I'm sure... there's not enough people trying to be assassins. I'm also pretty certain the moderator/DM/whoever-it-is-that's-trying-to-play-the-bad-guys doesn't have enough evil villains in store, so we need an assassin.

Okay, I'm being sarcastic, but can you see how shallow that is? I can see a person that's been trained to kill/backstab all their lives, but this one character that's an assassin/warrior/whatever-else fills your character up rather nicely, and leaves you with just a shallow bit of room on top, almost deep enough to get your finger wet in. Almost.

Alright, so not everyone makes these kind of characters, but you'll notice those that do are usually, not always, but usually the kind of players that jump in with both feet first, and always end up out lying in the sun to dry off first. It just gets too complex for them too fast, and they don't have the book depth to handle it. So, in closing, if you think you want to make the most awesome character, why not try for a cripple? You'd be amazed at how much attention you get from the other players. More by far than the assassin that follows in the shadows, while the player is still trying to get everyone to notice his presence. Why? We can't see you, you said so. Why should we notice you? Give us one good reason. And if you think a good reason is killing someone at random, we'll give you the boot.

Better yet, try working with the group, walking among it. Instead of the assassin, why not be the far-too-heavily attired fellow that has a hard time closing his mouth and keeping his hands to himself? You're bound to get more attention. That's who you are in real life anyway.

Or maybe you're not, or maybe you're like some of the more awesome people I've run across, like Miffy(Gaia), or Kalina(Santharia), or Jessie(Also Gaia, but I only remember her AIM name), who will make a character that reacts, in logical keeping with events in their past. We'll notice you more, I promise. You'll have more fun, be more of a part of the group, and not lose interest so fast. Try it, it may bring you more entertainment.
