The Birth of Lakiita
Note: This is the story of how the loveable dog demon named Lakiita came to be.

The Birth of Lakiita

Atemu paced back and forth restlessly in the hall outside a room in his palace. His dog demon concubine had been in labor for several hours now, and with each passing moment Atemu grew more and more nervous. In the delivery room, there was a small cry. The midwife smiled at the dog demon concubine. “It’s a girl,” she said in that sweet, sappy manner people always use when talking about newborn babies. The midwife cleaned up the baby and sent for Atemu to come in.

Atemu rushed into the room, a relieved yet somehow panicked look on his face, as if he was afraid that something was going to happen now that the baby was born. (Just a little note, Atemu is a very overprotective father and at least slightly paranoid as such. Also, when it comes time for the birth of any of his children…..well, let’s just say he’s not completely right in the head.) He held his arms out to the midwife, demanding to hold his child. The midwife nervously handed the baby over to him. He held the infant protectively close to him….at little too close.

The midwife, afraid of the pharaoh squishing and killing the child, decided to take her back. “Um, perhaps I should take her your highness. I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to hold her.” She then grabbed the infant out of the pharaoh’s arms; not a very good idea.

Atemu glared daggers at the midwife, never a look so terrifying ever having been seen from him. “Give me back my child!”

“I’m sorry your majesty, but I think it’s best if I hold her for now.”

Atemu ignored her words. “I SAID GIVE HER BACK TO ME. NOW!!!”

The midwife was now truly frightened of the pharaoh and the look in his eyes. It is never a good idea to get between Atemu and his children, a lesson the midwife was now learning. “I…..um….err…I….”

“AS YOUR PHAROH, I DEMAND TO SEE THE CHILD!!!”

The midwife trembled slightly, not wanting to see where this could go. “Uh…um….s-s-sure, of c-c-course your grace.” With that, she handed the baby over to Atemu. All of this had not only frightened the midwife, but also the little newborn. Atemu’s face changed to one of concern and remorse.

“Oh, I’m sorry little one; I did not wish to frighten you. Shhhh, it’s alright.” Atemu then walked out of the room with the infant, completely disregarding everyone else in the room. The midwife didn’t even try to stop him. She thought it would be a lot safer for everyone if she just let him go.

That day there was endless celebrations and everyone had gifts to give the newborn. After some thought, Atemu had decided to name the child Lakiita, and he held all the special ceremonies. Atemu and his to-be mate Nakisha (who is not the female who gave birth to Lakiita by the way), enjoyed that day to its fullest, happiness and excitement practically drowning the air. When night came, Atemu and Nakisha put Lakiita in her little crib in the room prepared for her. They kissed her goodnight and headed off to retire to their room; Nakisha almost had to drag Atemu away from Lakiita’s room first though.

With the door closed, the cozy little room was filled with darkness. There was a small illumination in the far corner, but that was the extent of the light. Stars of the mobile danced above Lakiita, like little guardians. Something wasn’t right though. The shadows moved and there was a slight rustling sound as someone moved into the room towards the crib. The stranger moved closer and closer to the crib. After just a few moments, Hiei’s annoyed face appeared above the mobile. “Hn. I don’t see what’s so special about you; you look like a pathetic lump to me.” (Now, Hiei really does care for his siblings, well, all but Lakiita that is. No one really knows why, but for one reason or another he harbors great dislike for the small dog demon.) Hiei picked up little Lakiita, holding her at a distance, and none too carefully may I add. He then put her into a basket and jumped out the window, leaping from various parts of the palace and then far off of the palace grounds. What Hiei did not know was that there was a small camera following him, very carefully, floating through the air.

Hiei finally came to a stop in the branch of a tree, sitting down with a sigh. “Well now, what am I gonna do with you?” he asked, staring at the basket. Lakiita may have squirmed in the basket if she wasn’t so terrified, and rightfully so. “I could feed you to Al, my pet alligator. Would you like to meet him? He’s actually a pretty cool fellow, temperamental, yes, but cool anyway. (Keep in mind this is a teenage Hiei….O.O…scary thought, never mind.) Then again, I could sell you on the slave market. That could produce a good deal of profit for me.” Hiei paused, clearly pondering on what he should do with the little bundle he held captive in the woven basket. He sighed. “I wish I could sell you, but the truth is I owe Al, so I gotta give you over to him. Oh well, at least this way is more fun.” So Hiei then set off for the Nile River.

Once he arrived there, he threw a stick in the water. “Hey, Al,” he called, “I got a surprise for you.” Just then a large alligator appeared at the surface, his beady eyes staring at Hiei.

The alligator looked more than a bit annoyed at being woken up at such an early hour. “*chomp chomp* *chomp chomp* *chomp chomp*” (Translation: “What the hell do you want?!? It’s four am!!!”)

Hiei glared back at Al (yes, Hiei can speak alligator….as weird as that is). “Hn. Well, never mind then. If you’re gonna be like that then I’ll just have to sell my newborn sister at the slave market and make tons of money. It is only out of the goodness of my heart (*cough*bull*cough*) that I decided to give her to you as a midnight snack, but if you’re gonna be ungrateful and just plain rude, I’ll take my business elsewhere.”

The alligator started moving closer, looking slightly apologetic, somehow….though I hardly know how an alligator can look apologetic, but whatever. “*chomp chomp* *chomp chomp* *chomp, chomp, chomp* *chomp* *chomp, chomp, chomp*” (Translation: “Oh, come on Hiei. I was just kidding around. I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean it. Can I please eat her? I’m soooo hungry.”

Hiei thought for a moment. “Hmmmm, I don’t know.” Al gave him a pleading look….sorta. Hiei sighed. “Fine, you can eat her. You do owe me though.” The alligator moved to the edge of the river, ready to greedily take Lakiita in one bite. Hiei kneeled down and opened the basket, picking Lakiita up out of it. He was just about to throw her to his hungry friend of scaly ness, when a light flashed in his eyes, momentarily blinding him. “Ahhh!!! What the hell?!?!” he exclaimed.

“HIEI, PUT YOUR SISTER DOWN NOW!!!” yelled an angry voice from the direction of the light. The voice belonged to Atemu, and angry was more than a bit of an understatement. Atemu wasn’t just angry, he was livid. There, beside Atemu, stood Nakisha and several palace guards, no one looking very happy. A couple of the palace guards had heard strange noises and went to investigate the newborn’s room. Upon finding the room empty and Lakiita missing, the guards had rushed to inform the pharaoh and his mate. Atemu had then sent the entire palace out looking for Lakiita. Seeing the sight before him only fueled his rage. “WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING HIEI?!?! THAT’S YOU LITTLE SISTER!!!”

Hiei shrugged his shoulders, having reluctantly put Lakiita back in the basket. “…and your point would be?”

At Hiei’s words, Atemu all but exploded, his fury reaching an all time high. Before he had a chance to respond, Nakisha walked over to Hiei and picked Lakiita up out of the basket, carrying her back to Atemu. She handed the little one over to him, hoping that she would help calm him down. “Atemu, please settle down. Yelling isn’t going to help matters any. I know you’re angry with Hiei, as am I, but this is no time to lose your head.”

Atemu looked down at the terrified infant in his arms, holding her tighter. He sighed, his anger slowly diminishing. “You’re right,” he said calmly, “as always.” Nakisha just smiled slightly. The pharaoh then turned to Hiei, his face stern again. “As for you young man, go to your room. We will discuss your punishment tomorrow.” Hiei was about to argue, but thought better of it and started walking back to the palace. When he was gone, Atemu sighed in relief. “That was way to close.”

Nakisha nodded. “We’ll have to keep an eye on him.”

Atemu nodded in agreement. “…..yeah.” For a moment he simply stared into Lakiita’s ruby orbs. “Nakisha, can she sleep with us for tonight?” he asked finally.

Nakisha laughed slightly, but agreed. “Alright, it’s fine with me.”

So, the rest of the night continued with out incident and Atemu and Nakisha slept soundly, knowing Lakiita was safe…..for now anyway. As for Hiei, well, let’s just say the next three weeks were anything but pleasant for him. Atemu locked him in a pink room, that being torturous for Hiei. Atemu did not deprive him of food or anything cruel like that, he just kept him in that pink room fringed with little pink pansies. Hiei used his confined time wisely, and started coming up with a million different ways to torment and/or get rid of Lakiita. As the days rolled by, his hate of his littlest sister grew ever the more. So began the never-ending struggle between the two, not to mention the countless headaches for Atemu and Nakisha, as well as all the trouble Hiei would end up in every time.
