The time has come
Prince Aubrey stared out of his window. From his bedroom, he could see a circle made of white brick where the five major roads of the country connected. When he was very young, his mother had shown it to him, telling him the Crossroads symbolized the unity of the country. He looked down at his mother's necklace. It was the symbol of the world; a pair of wings, a large circle, and diamond, and a smaller circle joined together. Queen Griselda believed in strong unity. Now Aubrey was twenty years old, and it was his time.

Aubrey looked around his room, as if to see his last moments as prince. On his desk was a picture of himself and his two best friends at his academy graduation. Aubrey was in the middle with Pitch to his right, and Keen to the left. They wore robes and tassels that matched the pendants around their necks. Aubrey wore white, pitch worse silver, and Keen wore orange. Keen also wore ropes around his neck, marking him as a student with high grades. The trio had only graduated that last year. Now Pitch was in police training with his older sister, and Keen was in a college in the next country with aims at becoming a professor at the very school from which they had graduated. Aubrey had been at home with his mother.

"Always dreaming about something."

Pitch and Keen were standing in the doorway. "Hey guys."

"We couldn't miss your ceremony. You know us better than that," Pitch said.

Keen nodded. "We are your friends."

"I know that. I greatly appreciate this." Aubrey sat on his bed. "I'm just having that feeling again."

"Uh oh. It's the I-don't-think-I'm-ready-for-this feeling." Pitch sat on the bed next to Aubrey. "Look, we've been through so much. The three of us saved the world together."

"We also finished school together."

"You don't think this is a big step for me?" Aubrey asked.

Keen shrugged. "Your mother thinks so, and you know she is very trustworthy. Remember, she was only eighteen when her father was killed, forcing her to take the throne."

"You're a Linkins!" Pitch said, referring to Aubrey's father, Chance Linkins. "Linkins' are ready for anything, and you know it."

"Yeah, but you probably don't remember that my father ran away from his problems instead of confronting them."

"He is not proud of his decision," Keen reminded him. "He's very much in love with your mother."

"You can do this," Pitch said. "We are your friends, and we will help you through this."

Aubrey stood up and put on his white ceremony robe. "I enjoy these little pep talks. I think that's why I'm going to make you primary members of my court."

Pitch and Keen looked at each other.

"It isn't like you have to do that much. You will be my advisors, companions, and best friends."

"Kind of like we are now. I'm in."

Keen smiled. "Me too."

Aubrey nodded. "It's time. Today begins the day of a new ruler of Himmeli."
