Kashan was born during the Crusades, but not to the name Kashan. That was a name he brought upon himself, and his original name is Joseph, although he does not tell anyone this.
His mother and brother were killed during the Crusades, and his father died of sickness when he was only 2 years old. He was 16 at the time he was apprenticed to a swordsmith, and one day a man who called himself Lucifer came requesting a weapon. Kashan was busy in the back, only hearing parts of his master and Lucifer's conversation, but he heard that Lucifer wished to speak with him.
Kashan readied himself for a conversation, curious as to what the man could want. The man simply explained he had a way to let him see his mother again, and Kashan, being less experienced in the guille of the world, trusted him. But the man's offer came with a price: he must kill his master.
Kashan believed that he could meet his mother again, and that night, killed his master in his sleep. Then Kashan followed Lucifer's instructions and met him in the town square. There, Lucifer summoned his mother's spirit, rather, her image. Kashan, amazed, fell to his knees before his dead mother and cried out to her, but she simply said nothing.
Kashan asked Lucifer why she wouldn't say anything back, and Lucifer explained that speaking with her was not part of the deal. Kashan enraged at this at struck at Lucifer, who simply dodged and broke Kashan's right arm, and then threw him to the ground. Kashan moaned and Lucifer gave him one more proposition: he would heal his arm, allow him to speak with his mother, and grant him strength he'd never dreamed of. All that Kashan had to do was agree in blood and carry out the assassinations of many important Crusaders.
At a young age such as this, Kashan loved power, and agreed to carry the assassinations out. Lucifer had him slit the arm that was broken and leave 30 drops of blood on a circle he had drawn. Immediately as he did this, Kashan began to change. His body became lean but muscular, and his hair darkened. Lucifer didn't tell him the name of his new form, but only warned him to drink the blood of the slain Crusaders if he wished to keep his sanity.
Kashan, from then until the end of the crusades, carried out Lucifer's will in the night, slaying and drinking the blood of hundreds of crusaders.

One night, near the end of the Crusades, Lucifer came to Kashan as he was walking the streets. He had one last request: Kashan was to assassinate a priest who was a lead candidate for becoming the next pope, and thus leader of the Crusaders. Kashan did this that night, drank the priest's blood, and then returned to his home to find Lucifer waiting. Lucifer told him that he was done in his service to him for now, and that Kashan had the favor of him. Lucifer gifted Kashan with eternal life and freedom to wander the earth as he pleased, stating that should he ever need the Lucifer again to simply draw a circle in the dirt, then cut his right arm, letting 50 drops of blood fall into it.
With these last words, Lucifer pulled an ornamented dagger from his cloak and cut a pitch black rift through the very air, and then walked through it.
Kashan stood there, watching the man leave through an otherworldly portal, noticing that his will had loosened from the man's grip. Kashan was so busy enjoying his new found free will and power that he completely forgot about his mother.

Only a few months later, after he realized from experience he needed no food nor to sleep, only to drink the blood of others, did he remember his deal about his mother with Lucifer. Kashan drew a circle in the floor of his own home and slit his right arm again, counting the drops of blood. At 50, the circle began glowing a ghostly black, and Lucifer stepped out. Kashan told him he wished to see his mother again, and Lucifer summoned her without delay. For the rest of the night until dawn, Kashan and his spectral mother spoke and cried together...
