About

And it all just rotted away...

"Does she live happily ever after?"

"Shouldn't there be something in the middle?"

"I like to read the ending first." She waited, curled up in her bed, to hear his assurances, to believe - for a minute at least - that everything could be okay. "So did she?"

He didn't hesitate. "Yes."

"I can't give up, I can't shrug things off and tell myself somebody else will take up the slack, because there isn't anybody else. There are too many people out there who need my protection; because I'm this powerful, I have an obligation to use that power. I'm the lone Guard at the Gate - I daren't give up, because there's nobody behind me to take up what I lay down."

Jervis' face went absolutely still. Vanyel wished he knew what the old man was thinking. "Nobody?" he asked.

Vanyel shook the hair out of his eyes. "Nobody," he echoed, staring into space. "I have no choice; it's that, or know my inaction dooms others. Sometimes lots of others. Too many times, others I know and care for."

Jervis' eyes grew deep and thoughtful, and Vanyel could feel them on his back as he left, headed for the bathhouse.

My stomach churned acid. "Denna," I said. "A man who could do that to you- he's not worth your time. Not one moment of it. It's not a matter of him being only half a loaf. He's rotten through. You deserve better."

"Who knows what I deserve?" she said. "He's not my best loaf. He's it. Him or hungry."

"You have other options," I said, then stalled, thinking of my conversation with Deoch. "You've... you've got..."

"I've got you," she said dreamily. I could hear the warm, sleepy smile in her voice, like a child tucked into bed. "Will you be my dark-eyed Prince Gallant and protect me from pigs? Sing to me? Whisk me away to tall trees..." she trailed off to nothing.

"I will," I said, but I could tell by the heavy weight of her against my arm that she had finally fallen asleep.

"I can feel her truths," whispered the boy as he rocked. "Clearer than the others. Sharp and prugent. If you kill Stefen tonight, you'd better kill her, too. Coyotes sing in the daylight as well as the night. These are the truths she carries."

"Jo-Jo?" Ben said after a bit.

"Hmm?"

"There's one more thing I know about you."

I cracked open one eye. "Already?"

"Not that," he chuckled, and pressed a kiss to my forehead. "No . . . I know you still love me."

I looked at him fully, then just watched him watching me before nodding my mute reply.

"You always have," he said, with full confidence. "You always will."

I stared past him and outside the window, where dawn waited impatiently. "I guess that's how you knew to leave the door open for me."

"Oh, Jo-Jo," he said, sighing sleepily as he gathered me tight to his body. "It was never closed."

He wanted to give her a hug, or take her hand, or in some physical way make a farewell; he wanted to infuse just a whisper of his magic into her veins, diffuse just a little of her remaining heaviness. But she merely settled more deeply in her chair, her arms along the armrests, and watched him pick up his candle and shuffle to the door. With his hand on the knob, he turned to give her one last look.

"You're sure you're all right?"

"Don't divide your loyalties," she said softly. "Give Amalie your whole heart."

"Nobody's heart is whole," he said.

"No," she said, "but don't squander love."

He opened the door and stepped into the hall. "I don't think I ever have," he said quietly. "I don't think it was ever wasted."

She was smiling again as he shut the door between them.

Haemun grinned. "That, too, but that's just the way you operate, not who you are. Deep underneath it all is a sort of tarnished nobility, a cynical Prometheus if you will."

"Me?" The idea made me squirm. "I'll pass. Look what it got Prometheus."

"I didn't claim you were the original," said Haemun. "More like he who would steal fire from the Gods for the benefit of man . . . knowing that not only would the Gods kick the crap out of him, but the mankind's response was going to be a mix of yawns and complaints that now they have to keep feeding the damn thing."

Justyn seemed to grow taller for a moment; and his ragged robes gathered around him of themselves like a royal garment. He looked, at that moment, just like a real wizard, the kind they made songs about and painted portraits of. He looked like Wizard Kyllian.

Like a hero -

The Thing lifted the reigns of its mount, and the lizard put one ponderous foot after the other onto the bridge, its head swinging from side to side with each pace, and the first lot of bear-things followed until it and the entire first rank of creatures were crowded six deep behind it on the bridge. Justyn simply stood there, unmoving, until the muzzle of the lizard was barely the length of the staff away from his face.

Justyn bowed his head in a momentary nod.

Then, with no warning, the entire bridge and everything on it vanished into a sheet of flame.

Curran turned the book over in his hands. "You own words of power."

He knew what a word of power was. Lovely. I shrugged. "Picked up a couple here and there. What happened in the Gap was a one shot deal. I won't be that powerful again." At least not until the next flare.

"You're an interesting woman," he said.

"Your interest has been duly noted." I pointed to the door.

He put the book down. "As you wish." He rose and walked past me. I lowered my sword, expecting him to pass, but suddenly he stepped in dangerously close. "Welcome home. I'm glad you made it. There is coffee in the kitchen for you."

My mouth gaped open.

He inhaled my scent, bent close, about to kiss me . . .

I just stood there like an idiot.

Curran smirked and whispered in my ear instead. "Psych."

And just like that, he was out the door and gone.

Oh boy.

Chad had been watching Stefan's mouth with every evidence of fascination. He made a few gestures, and Stefan signed back, saying, "They're dead. No. Someone else killed them. Yes, I'm sure it was someone else." He glanced at me. "Want to explain to the kid that I'm more a Spike than a Buffy? A villain, not a super hero?"

I batted my eyelashes at him. "You're my hero."

He jerked several steps back from me as if I'd hit him. It made me wonder what Marsilia had said to him while she'd tortured him.

"Stefan?"

He turned back to us with a hiss and an expression that made Chad back into me. "I'm a vampire, Mercy."

I wasn't going to let him get away with morose, self-hating vampire act. He deserved better than that. "Yeah, we got that. It's the fangs that give it away - translate for Chad, please." I waited while he did so, his hands jerky with anger or something related to it. Chad relaxed against me.

Stefan continued signing, and said, almost defiantly, "I'm no one's hero, Mercy."

I turned my face until I was looking directly at Chad. "Do you think that means I won't get to see him in spandex?"

“Will you be all right for a moment?” the king asked. “I must see to Colin¬–”

His face and presence had so filled her vision and mind, the clamor of the fighting had fallen into the distant background. When he shifted, she caught the glint of steel over his shoulder.

“No!” she cried.

She wrapped her arms around him, and rolled him onto his back. She sheltered him wither her own body, clenching her eyes shut in anticipation of the battle ax that would cleave through her spine. She waited an eternity.

“Karigan–” the king’s voice rumbled beneath her. “Karigan, as much as I’m enjoying this, I can’t breathe.”

She cracked her eyes open and realized she held him in a death grip. Hastily she rolled off him.

Helping hands lifted her to her feet. Weapons surrounded them and assisted the king to rise as well. The throne room was significantly quieter. Suits of armor stood in various positions, frozen in time, weapons caught in mid-swing. The armor that had come upon her and the king stood with its ax at its apex. Thinking about the old but sharp blade hacking into her spine made her lightheaded.

The Weapons caught her and supported her.

“The messenger service is wasted on this one,” said Donal. “She has the mettle to join the Black Shields.”

Other Weapons chimed in with their approval, and though light-hearted banter ensued, it held an earnest ring to it.

“I rather like her in green,” the king said, and he winked at her.

“Her fingers shook so hard that I could feel it when I put my own around them. “Murph,” I said. She kept looking up and down the aisle, her eyes a little wild. “Karrin.”

She looked up at me. She looked very young, somehow.

“Remember what I said yesterday,” I said. “You’re hurt. But you’ll get through it. You’ll be okay.”

She closed her eyes tightly. “I’m scared. So scared I’m sick.”

“You’ll get through it.”

“What if I don’t?”

I squeezed her fingers. “Then I will personally make fun of you every day for the rest of your life,” I said. “I will call you a sissy girl in front of everyone you know, tie frilly aprons on your car, and lurk in the parking lot at CPD and whistle and tell you to shake it, baby. Every. Single. Day.”

Murphy’s breath escaped in something like a hiccup. She opened her eyes, a mix of anger and wary amusement easing into them in place of the fear. “You do realize I’m holding a gun, right?”
