My dad got bitten by the cycling bug when I was a child as well. He didn't do it competitively (though he has done some very long distance rides as fundraisers), but he was commuting to work every day on the bike and going out for a long ride most weekends, and actually still rides quite a bit as a retiree. He did teach me how to ride on the road but it wasn't something I really did much of for years, the cycling is a fairly recent thing. I've lost a lot of weight since I started but that was a secondary goal to getting fit and being active, plus the cost advantages of not needing the household to have a second car. You don't have to fix the diet straight away, just one thing at a time! Watching anime at the same time as getting fit is a bonus.
Once you are able to keep track of all the characters and their nicknames (a real struggle the first time I read the book), War and Peace is a great book! I generally enjoy stories like this which show personal progress and redemption. If you like musical theatre (I do but I know it's a bit of a divisive topic), there was a musical made a few years back based on an excerpt from War and Peace called Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (or Great Comet for short). The lyrics heavily draw from the text and it has a mixture of traditional and electronic music influences. It's sung through so you'd get the full idea just from listening to the soundtrack. I hope you enjoy your read through!
I think there's some crossover between people who would work in education and people who would mod for Gaia. You need to be patient, organised, and have good written communication skills. People on the team do come from a variety of walks of life, but I do know of other current or past moderators who do other teaching or training.
I was taking a look at your profile and see you also like cycling! What kind of riding do you do? Do you mainly ride on a stationary bike, do you cycle to commute, are you doing mountain biking or racing? There's also a few other things I can think of under the banner of cycling and I'm not sure what you like. I got really into cycling for commuting a few years back as it's not that much slower than driving (and usually faster than taking a bus) over short and medium distances, it's good for me, and I don't have to worry about parking.
It would certainly show dedication to the cause but I don't think they'd let you do that. xd Mod applications are reviewed to make sure that you'd be a good fit for the team, and if you were obviously applying just to get an achievement or the Flair (there's a flair that was just given to mods, you can see it in the flair guide in the forums) without showing the other necessary traits you'd have your application declined. When I applied for the team, the achievement wasn't a thing, and I've enjoyed my previous time on the team helping out users and the site in general.
I know people with more achievement points (there's a bit of a community around collecting points and so I know other keen collectors), but I do definitely have a lot! Achievements have been one of my interests on Gaia and I've been pretty consistently active since the system launched, so I've only missed a handful where events have been buggy or my life has been too hectic to complete the requirements in the timeframe required for an event.
