After nearly dying in an attack of his company's headquarters building in the faraway town of Midgar and a few years of physical therapy to recuperate from the injuries he sustained and a disease called geostigma, Rufus realized the ruin his company was left in, and, having no resources left to power his hometown which was slowly in the process of being rebuilt, he moved to the nation of Gaia to find mako, a substance that his company refines and combusts to make electrical energy.
