About
A man walks along the beach at sunset. The sun casts its mighty orange rays across the darkening sky; night will soon come.
He is walking, and occasionally stopping, bending down, and lightly tossing things back into the sea.
He is tossing back starfish that have washed up on shore.
He spends every night like this, walking down to the ocean and tossing the sea stars back into the water.
On one evening, he encounters another man walking along the same beach. When they finally meet, the stranger stops and observes what the man is doing.
The man doesn't notice him, and another starfish is put back home.
The stranger looks sadly around the beach and sees even more starfish washing up on the sand.
He coughs to get the man's attention, and the man smiles at him.
Then, the stranger asks, "Why are you doing this? They're only starfish, and besides, there are so many; you can't possibly make a difference. Do you really think it matters to anyone?"
And the man stopped, held up a starfish in hand and replied simply,
"It matters to this one."
And he placed it back into the sea.
