The Prince
(art by me, from my art blog)
The fairy kingdom of Halvarey is currently ruled by King Cypress and Queen Jezzamine. They have a single son, Aspen, of whom they are extremely protective. They have included him in political affairs and council meetings ever since he was old enough to pay attention. Because of this, Aspen knows how to mingle with aristocracy and his usual behavior is polite and friendly.
Being born into royalty can be frustrating, however. His parents rarely let him leave the canopy - the area at the top of the tree in which the kingdom resides - and so the prince rarely gets to see what goes on in the lower sections. He is young and has spent almost his entire life in the palace when he would much rather explore. The responsibility of being a prince doesn’t bother him. Aspen finds the position honorable and someday he would love to be a good king. But how can his parents expect him to rule Halvarey if he doesn’t know what goes on at the base? And they ought to let him have a little more fun. Playing in the dirt isn’t going to hurt anyone.
So sometimes Aspen will sneak out through his bedroom window and fly down to the tree roots, where there are no nobles he has to schmooze and nobody cares if you eat with your hands instead of a fork. Occasionally his parents will find out and send guards to bring him back home.
