About

Good evening, for I assume that would be the time you chose to visit me, I AM the astronomy professor here at Hogwarts after all.

My name is Aurora Sinistra, and as my name coincidently implies, I am not much of a social creature. I prefer the company of the stars and planets. Most students in the school will never know my name, though they may see me sitting in the Great Hall with the other professors from time to time.

I attended Hogwarts before becoming a professor, and I'm sure you can assume what house I belonged to. If you cannot, which is a shame for I would think it to be obvious, I was a Ravenclaw. I prefer to keep my alliance in this "wizarding war" a secret. Information like that could potentially result in death and I do prefer living.

Some intriguing facts about my name...
Aurora was the Ancient Roman goddess of the dawn ('Eos' in Greek).
"sinistra" = Latin for "with the left hand." For Ancient Greeks and Romans the left side symbolized unfavorable omens and perverseness.
"Sinistra" = the name of a magnitude 3.5 star in the constellation Ophiuchus, the Serpent Handler.

Ophiuchus represented Aesculapius, the ancient healer, believed to be the ancestor of Hippocrates (born 460 BCE) the great physician of Cos, and Serpens was his symbol of healing. The serpent is the symbol for the poison (venom) that can both cure and kill, Ophiuchus controls it and uses it to heal. This same snake is found on the symbol of medicine worldwide, the staff of the god Mercury, the caduceus, and both these constellations are associated with it, the caduceus shows two snakes coiling around a central rod surmounted by two wings of the bird on top.

Feel free to befriend me, though I must request you either leave a note on my wall or send me a PM to chat with me a bit first. I do like to know who the people on my list ARE.

I will join RPs upon request.

Blue is a fine color, but it's not really me. If you know what I mean. By the way, my love, that baby you are holding is certainly a handsome little tyke. Takes after his father, I presume? User Image

Rodolphus? As in Rodolphus Lestrange? That boy has had a temper all his life, though he tries to act as if he doesn't. And should I not comment on the things that I find beautiful in this world? Rodolphus should be used to men commenting on the beauty of his chosen women over the years.

That sounds like a wonderful idea, my love.

ASTRONOMY

Astronomy is the only field of study at Hogwarts which has a direct equivalent in the Muggle world. Astronomy classes take place in the Astronomy Tower, the tallest tower in Hogwarts. Lessons involve observations of the night skies with telescopes. No Astronomy lesson, or even a fragment of one, is ever depicted in the movies. Known student homework activities include learning the names of stars, constellations and planets, as well as their location and movements, and describing the environments of planets and moons.

SINISTRA IN THE BOOKS

Aurora Sinistra is the teacher of Astronomy in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Although Astronomy is a compulsory subject for students of all years at Hogwarts, the character remains obscure and appears extremely rarely in the books.

Professor Sinistra's first appearance is in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, helping to move a petrified Justin Finch-Fletchley to the hospital wing. The genderless title of "Professor" and the lack of any description of the character or lines for him or her to say prevented us from knowing even Sinistra's gender. The character does not appear again in the book.

Sinistra appears again at the beginning of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire when the teachers' table is described and again during the Yule Ball, dancing a nervous two-step with (a presumed) Professor Moody. From that it can be deduced that Professor Sinistra is a witch rather than a wizard. This deduction was corraborated by JK Rowling's representatives when the Portugese translators need to know her gender.

Professor Sinistra holds her classes every Wednesday at midnight on the top of the Astronomy Tower of Hogwarts, since it is the tallest tower of the castle and offers the best view of the night sky. The Astronomy Tower is otherwise out of bounds for students.
